SHORT BEAKED COMMON DOLPHIN IN THE FJORD!! Breaking news from our fjord with the sighting of a very rare species in Icelandic waters! Short-beaked common dolphins are one of the most present and familiar dolphins in the world. They are very social and widely distributed, preferring warm tropical waters, primarily offshore. This is the first time this year we see this species in the area and only second time in the history - first recorded encounter of them this far north has only happened last summer in our fjord. We are very excited about seeing this species but it's also not necessarily a good sign to see one dolphin alone in such unusual area. We will monitor the situation and keep you updated! Las aves pertenecientes al género Fratercula, comúnmente conocidas como puffins o frailecillos, son especies marinas características del hemisferio norte, destacadas por su singular morfología y comportamiento. El término "Fratercula", derivado del latín, significa "pequeño fraile", denota su aspecto físico, reminiscente de un religioso de menor tamaño, evidenciado por su plumaje oscuro y blanco. Estas aves se distinguen por su estructura anatómica compacta, caracterizada por cuerpos redondeados y alas cortas pero robustas, óptimas para la navegación en aguas y vuelos ágiles. Su pico corto y robusto, adaptado para la captura de peces, indica su dependencia de esta fuente de alimento. A pesar de la longitud reducida de sus alas en comparación con otras especies marinas, los puffins exhiben habilidades de vuelo sobresalientes, capaces de alcanzar velocidades considerables en el aire. La migración es un fenómeno crucial en la vida de los puffins, quienes realizan impresionantes desplazamientos que abarcan vastas distancias. Adapted. ⁠ ⁠ Boreal winds shape white crystalline landscapes.⁠ Over fields of sculpted ice, sheered and torn. ⁠ Winter is a challenge, a marathon. ⁠ ⁠ -50 degrees Celsius. That's the general limit of what an Arctic fox can endure in winter months. It's only possible though due to their incredibly high density fur coat, which is one of the thickest in the animal kingdom. Some 70-90 thousand hairs per square centimeter. ⁠ ⁠ Compare that to the average human head, which has 100-150 hairs per square centimeter. The difference is crazy!⁠ ⁠ Did you know Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in Northwest Iceland has the highest concentration of Arctic Foxes in Iceland? This image was captured during an trip with my friends at @boreaadventures to a remote house on the reserve, built before the landscape was converted to a reserve. ⁠ ⁠ It's such a wild, remote, and raw location.
