During our summer tour to Hornvik in 2021 large numbers of guillemot chicks were being washed up on the beach. Not sure what event had caused this but probably a large rockfall on one of the bird cliffs. The foxes made the best of this windfall by constantly patrolling the shoreline. Grænahlið, Hornstrandir, Vestfirðir 🇮🇸 10/06/23 Grænahlíð is a cliff in Ísafjarðarbær, Westfjords and has an elevation of 409 metres. Grænahlíð is situated nearby to the locality Skáladalur. Hornstrandir is Iceland’s northernmost peninsula, at the northern end of the Westfjords. The area covers 580 km2 (220 sq mi) of tundra, fjord, glacier and alpine land with rich but fragile vegetation, and protected as Hornstrandir Nature Reserve since 1975, under some of the strictest preservation rules in Iceland. The area’s nature thrived as very few people resided there. In the 1950s, the handful of its residents who were based on agricultural livelihood left. Adapted. Boreal winds shape white crystalline landscapes. Over fields of sculpted ice, sheered and torn. Winter is a challenge, a marathon. -50 degrees Celsius. That's the general limit of what an Arctic fox can endure in winter months. It's only possible though due to their incredibly high density fur coat, which is one of the thickest in the animal kingdom. Some 70-90 thousand hairs per square centimeter. Compare that to the average human head, which has 100-150 hairs per square centimeter. The difference is crazy! Did you know Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in Northwest Iceland has the highest concentration of Arctic Foxes in Iceland? This image was captured during an trip with my friends at @boreaadventures to a remote house on the reserve, built before the landscape was converted to a reserve. Being with these gorgeous animals in their natural habitat can only be described as a magical experience. I could have never imagined how humbling and breathtaking it would be. When the first brave individuals approached us, my hands got too shaky to shoot images and my eyes literally started tearing. It took me a minute to pull myself together and attempt to capture their incredible cuteness and quirky personalities! Needless to say, I instantly fell in love with them!

American Mink (Neovison vison) or (Neogale vison) - depending on who you care to believe - with shorthorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus scorpius) caught in the shallows. Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, Iceland. It was fascinating to watch this mink diving for fish a few metres offshore. Mink are an invasive species in Iceland having escaped from fur farms and are now relatively common around the coast. I don't know just how much of a threat to native species they are but I imagine they are pretty unpopular around eider farms. #kviarlodge #iceland @boreaadventures #hornstrandir

This last February, I have spent 22 nights out of the 28 in the nature reserve of Hornstrandir, guiding photographers and videographers but also monitoring the foxes and new areas. I’m really happy to say everything went extremely well and next year will be even better! Also got a huge motivation to get things moving positively in terms of conservation. I was in Iceland in early March photographing Arctic Foxes. I have been visiting this location for a few years now and it is an amazing place to see these beautiful little foxes. It was challenging conditions this year as it was very mild for the time of the year. It felt more like spring than winter and the snow was melting fast. I still managed to get some great opportunities though especially of this little fox seen in this image. She was very relaxed in our presence, and it was great just watching her go to sleep proving how relaxed she was. Yes, this is an arctic fox. Why is it not white? Most people assume that they're supposed to be adapted to blend in with the color of the snow. Arctic foxes appear in two main color morphs: white & blue. This fox is a blue morph, which is actually more brown/charcoal colored. Here in Iceland, there is a much higher number of this color variation (more than anywhere else) due to the adaptation of the dark color to camouflage with the rocky volcanic coastlines where they forage for food (theorised). Such a cool example of how animals can adapt to specific environments. I'm stoked to share this image as well as it's the result of being in the right place at the right time. In the most remote region of Iceland, only accessible by boat: Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. I spent a few days here in February with my friends at @boreaadventures on a recce scouting a new location for fox photography. Such an incredible place. Also, because it's a protected area for the foxes it hosts the highest density of foxes in Iceland and the foxes there have no fear of humans. #arcticfox #iceland #icelandicnature #hornstrandir
