The island of Ikaria owes its name to Icarus, the hero of Greek mythology son of Daedalus, both of which managed to escape from the labyrinth of Crete, due to the feathers and waxwings they made. However, Icarus flew too close to the sun, so his wings melted and he fell into the Aegean Sea, where he died. The sea was named the Icarian Sea and the island was named Ikaria. Some sources mention that at the time Icarus fell into the sea, the mighty Hercules was passing by and he gave the fallen Icarus a befitting burial. Berating himself for his tragic loss, he continued to fly towards Sicily where he sought refuge in the Court of King Cocalus of Camicus. With the King’s help, he constructed a temple dedicated to Apollo and as an offering to the god hung up his wings for good. The story of Icarus is a metaphor for self-sabotage through ego and confidence. We are all susceptible to it. One day a friend visited me while I was working and told me about the Ikarian Snake that looks like a dragon and is very long, a black one. I said I had never seen one but we could try to make it together. The black snake was born from my hands, and after all these little baby snakes I will share in different posts. There’s been a lot of buzz about blue zones lately, and for good reason! I was blessed to get to travel to Ikaria, Greece a couple of years ago and it left a lasting impression on me. Being immersed in such an ancient and in-tact CULTURE of wellness imbued *my body* with a deep understanding that health is cultivated through lifestyle. It cannot be packaged or purchased! I stayed at a winery / farm run by Eleni and George, who always had time to chat and never seem rushed - despite the fact that running a farm, a homestead, and a restaurant keeps them really busy. Each person in the family has a different role, and they seem to truly rejoice in each other’s company. Yes, they grow their own food and forage from the mountains, drink natural wines from their own grapes, and are in great shape as exercise is inherent in their daily tasks (feeding the farm animals, harvesting grapes, cooking, caring for the home, etc).
