Inside the double back. The floating inner back is Western Red Cedar is braced to be responsive and extremely light since it provides little structural benefit. The outer back is built extremely rigid as it is intended to be durable and lock in the shape or dome of the back. I use ‘perpendicular’ floating braces to achieve the rigidity and the slot running down the center is a sound hole to allow air flow and the floating back to vibrate. Again I was pleased with how this turned out and it drew inspiration from a few examples one contemporary and a couple historic. Be well and get your hands dirty.
A throwback to an experimental double back Weissenborn style guitar. The idea was to explore a way to reduce the dampening effect the players lap has on the back of the guitar. It’s out in the wild and I hear it made its way into the studio on more than a few albums. I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out. #IGQuiltFest2024 Day 28: texture 💕 I will never NOT be thrilled & amazed at the magical “before & after” of #woolyarn ties turning into #poofballs & nothing gets me RACING to the dryer faster! ✨😍✨ I first learned this from @sherrilynnwood in her #improvhandbookformodernquilters & I absolutely love it. I like using 100% wool to get the tightest #poofs- any yarn made for felting will work. Depending what brand you use & how short you cut the ties, they can range from perfect little balls to “popcorn” to longer “troll hair” ones. They can be such a fun addition to a quilt & can really up the whimsy factor! I also like to do this on quilts that have a design I don’t want to distract from, so I’ll put the poofs on the #quiltback to make that side more interesting. #IGQuiltFest2024 Day 27: current WIP 💕 I started making this quilt almost a year ago after collecting solid jellyrolls for awhile. (*a HUGE “thank you” to everyone who makes them where every strip is a different color! 🙌🏻) I’d had an idea in mind to create a colorful “super stripe” twin quilt & I finally had enough different colored fabric strips to dive in. This was a fast & fun make with minimal measuring & zero pinning & I implemented one of the most eye opening lessons I learned from a #DenyseSchmidt workshop: if you just use ALL the colors, you can’t go wrong! #🌈💕 I decided it NEEDED 2 lines of black hand quilting on every stripe, but once I got started I quickly realized it was going to take forever & it took a back burner to holiday market prep. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because it didn’t take long for me to know I really just wanted keep it for myself. It totally reminds me of the #MLisadaQuilts & all of those wonderful memories & it makes me so happy when I look at it! PART 3: My sculptures in college were non-objective, meaning that I didn't want them to represent anything from reality. To be honest, I was scared to create anything representational. Once you add representational elements into your art, people have questions, you have to explain and give meaning to your choices. People will also judge your art based on how realistic you made it, and I didn't want to be labeled a "bad artist" for not recreating something perfectly. Non-objective art was just easier, forms are allowed to simply exist without a deeper meaning. Plus, if you want to see something realistic, just look around you. I want to create things that people don't see. #IGQuiltFest2024 Day17: Quilts of significance 💕 (*another re-post, I’m tired…) Wedding Quilt recap! ❤️ I wanted to share the story of this quilt all in one post for everyone who has been following along & so the happy couple can know all the different meanings behind it & have something to share if they want to. It all started with a facebook message from my high school friend, Kim: “Heeeey how long does it take for you to create a commissioned quilt?” Her son, Max, was marrying his bride, Becky, & she wanted to gift them with a quilt. I sent her a couple options of patterns I’d been wanting to make & she chose this simple block made from a square with 2 added strips. I had initially envisioned the squares as different shades of chambrays & denims, so it worked out perfectly when they picked blue as their primary color. Kim wanted to add greens & grays to represent the Boundary Waters where they camp & canoe every year on the US/Canada border. I found a cool photo online taken from a canoe up there & decided to do an abstract interpretation of the photo for the color placement. I sketched it out first to make sure it was going to work & then had fun selecting a fabric pull with a focus on nature themed prints. Once it got under way, the top came together pretty quickly & it briefly took over my apartment spreading out over 3 rooms at one point. I cut everything freehand with scissors & placed the blocks on point for a little more movement than a traditional square patchwork layout. With all the colors & patterns going on, I decided to face them all in the same direction to simplify things a bit. I thought they looked like a bunch of little tents & Kim saw them as arrows pointing north- which both had hidden meanings. The back was a mix of a few upcycled Ralph Lauren sheets- a couple chambrays with a band of one of my all time favorite florals along the bottom. An olive green binding pulled everything together & was a nod to another wedding gift: their green canoe. I plotted out an image of the Boundary Water canoe area on the back & densely hand quilted the waterline & then echoed out single lines above & below. (*continued in comments ⬇️)

#IGQuiltFest2024 Day 15: #BestTipEver 💕Pin your #quiltsandwich from the back when you’re #handquilting so you don’t constantly catch your thread on your pins! 😍 It depends on the #quilting design & fabric pattern if I’m able to just reverse my sandwiching layers (quilt top right side down on the floor) or not. If I need to draw out Baptist fans with my template, I will do it with the quilt top facing up & transfer the fan pattern after smoothing the layers, but before pinning. Then I will hold the quilt in my lap & one by one unpin them & reach underneath to re-pin it from behind. Yes, this step doubles the pinning time, but at least I can do round 2 sitting comfortably on the couch & it is still SO WORTH IT to save myself the frustration of all those caught threads! It drives me crazy to have to smooth out the tension of the bunched up fabric & to constantly re-thread my needle. Once the repinning is done, I can settle in to the slow, peaceful rhythm of #handstitching frustration-free…❤️ (*PS- another great tip for life in general: Something that really changed my to-do list was making it into 2 columns. In the 1st, write the task needing to be done & in the 2nd, write the positive outcome/feeling that will be the result of completing the task. AFTER and BEFORE pics📸 • “If they keep building em, I’ll keep fixing em!” • Don’t know which modern designer thought these climbable railings were a good idea over a 12’ drop🤷🏻♂️ • Used aspen shoe rail and 1/2 square spindles from @timbertownofficial to change from horizontal to vertical spindles. Built a wood frame to save us from patching and respraying the railing. Cut off the old school profile on the table saw, stained with a Med. Walnut Danish Oil with two clear coats of polyurethane. Day 9 of #igquiltfest2024 // Fabric Storage: In our current situation, traveling with our truck, my stash fits into one big tote bag, not worth a picture 😅 but back in our house, I had all my fabric stored in containers in my grandparents' old kitchen buffet. I love this antique piece so much because childhood memories are involved. And it is the perfect storage space. Before it moced in, I used to keep my fabric on book shelves. Not a good idea, as eventually the folded edges bleached in the sunlight. #IGQuiltFest2024 Day 9: fabric storage 💕(*EDIT: this is NOT the current state of my sewing room. Unfortunately, it is still buried in boxes of “Mom stuff” that I inherited & still can’t deal with without crying & giving up. Soon, I hope… I need my space back…) After 20 years of small NYC apartments with a lot of kitchen table sewing, I feel really lucky to have a big enough living room now to devote half of it to my sewing studio. 🔹1) I love using this IKEA Kallax for larger pieces of fabric including my vintage sheets & mens’ button downs collections. (*I wish it was still this neatly folded & color coordinated!) The console underneath hides my printer & a ton of sewing & craft supplies.🔹2) I have a nice big wall in my entryway where I rigged up a clothesline to hang batting for a design wall. I love that I have room to really step back to assess things from a different perspective.🔹3) Just to the right of the 2nd photo is my sewing table & more shelving which mostly houses FQ’s, yarn & some quilting books. #IGQuiltFest2024 Day 5: Why do you quilt? 💕 I have loved being creative & making things with my hands since I was a kid. I appreciate good design & quality craftsmanship. I love auditioning fabric & imagining all the possibilities of putting different colors & patterns together. I enjoy the puzzle & challenge of making do. I love upcycling thrifted bedsheets, mens’ shirts & vintage quilt tops & giving them new love & a new life. I treasure the kind, generous quilty friendships I’ve made- especially here on Instagram. #IGQuiltFest2024 Day 4: ergo quilter 💕 You guys… I CANNOT recommend this enough! It is life changing! ✨😍✨ Buy a 24x36 cutting mat on sale. Slice it into thirds. (*I just used cheap “utility scissors” from the dollar store) Lay them end to end & use strong tape on the bottom seams (I’m looking at you, @scotch Rough Surface extra strong) & it will lie flat & even fold up nice & neat! 😍 I’ve dreamed of this whenever I’m trying to square up a quilt on my floor & wishing I just had a super long cutting mat so I didn’t have to keep moving it. It’s also nice for larger cuts in general where it can be much more manageable on the floor. I’m so over fighting a heavy quilt that is a pain to lift onto my table & then wants to move around while I cut as the weight shifts. #IGQuiltFest2024 Day 3: sewing machine 💕 I still have my trusty Brother CS6000i- it’s a little workhorse & I’ve made a TON of baby quilts with it over the years! It’s very beginner friendly & I’ll always keep it as a backup & to zigzag stitch Frankenbatting. I splurged on a JUKI TL2010q about 5 years ago & boy, is she pretty! 😍 Metal construction & only doing a straight stitch cuts down on a lot of options for mechanical failure & it has a much larger throat space for quilting. ( #FunFact: it wasn’t long after this nearly $1,000 investment that I started to almost exclusively hand quilt! 😂) I love it for piecing with the 1/4 inch foot, although I do get skipped stitches here & there that I can’t seem to be able to troubleshoot. I guess I just need to take it in, but that keeps not happening… I stick a few super strong magnets to the bobbin winders on both of my machines to keep #pinsandneedles ready to go. It’s super handy when removing pins or grabbing a needle quick to bury a thread. I’m so happy that #igquiltfest has rolled around again- I have definitely been needing a push to start posting more regularly. I’m Ellen of @ellengracequilts & I’ve been making #cheerfulquilts quilts since 2012. What started on a whim as a baby gift has been going pretty much non-stop ever since. Work in progress. Adding to the lounge modular (make it up as i go) furniture. Trying to compliment the TV stand i did last year (that still needs finishing) with additional storage units and a moveable coffee table. Notice the mix of ply, pine and foraged branch? Consider it my style for these pieces. Still work to do, legs for the second unit, doors for the first. Also want to put a display unit on top of the first storage unit. New beginnings baby. My husband and I are in the process of moving homes! Moving is SO MUCH work. Everything is everywhere and nothing is truly organized. I made these giant 8 foot lightsabers for a friend's wedding. I was inspired by the YouTube channel "I like to Make Stuff" where he made giant light sabers.
