Today we would like to introduce you to our “old lady” Olivia. If you don’t know this animal: It’s an oryx (or gemsbok) and it’s often called the „heraldic animal“ of Namibia as it is depicted on the coat of arms of the country. The gemsbok (Oryx gazella), or South African oryx, is a large antelope in the genus Oryx. It is endemic to the dry and barren regions of Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and (parts of) Zimbabwe, mainly inhabiting the Kalahari and Namib Deserts, areas in which it is supremely adapted for survival. Their fur is pale with contrasting dark markings in the face and on the legs, and their long horns are almost straight. They use their horns to defend themselves against attacking animals, and their defense is often successful even against larger predators such as lions. Gemsbok live in herds of about 10–40 animals, which consist of a dominant male, a few nondominant males, and a large group of females. On the one hand, the unusual color is caused by the pigment melanin, which colors their tongue just like people’s skin and thus protects against sunburn. f you had known? How big do giraffes get? Males (bulls) grow up to 6 meters high and weigh an average of around 1600 - 1900 kilograms, while females (cows) remain slightly smaller. They grow to a maximum height of 4.5 meters and weigh around 830 - 1200 kilograms. In the wild, giraffes can live up to 20 years, in zoos even up to 36 years! If you had known? How long does a giraffe sleep per day? Deep sleep is life-threatening for giraffes, which is why they avoid it! Giraffes only sleep for a few minutes at a time, meaning only a few hours a day in total. They usually rest and snooze while standing and not eating. If the giraffe wants to sleep and dream properly, it has to lie down and curl up. However, in the wild this is often far too dangerous, as when an enemy attacks, it takes far too long for them to get up and untie their huge body. So you should consider yourself extremely lucky if you see a giraffe lying or sitting down, because it only takes up this position for a maximum of half an hour per day and only if they are feeling absolutely safe. Otherwise, dozing will have to do. In total, giraffes only sleep around 2 to 4 hours a day! Wie lange schläft eine Giraffe pro Tag? Für die Giraffe ist der Tiefschlaf lebensgefährlich.
