With Nikki Parkinson, @stylingyou at a photoshoot we did earlier in the year for her mainstream label, @stylingyouthelabel ♥️ I shared videos from the runway show in my stories and I'll be posting pics from the day very soon! But right now I want to talk all about the blonde here with me. I've spoken about Nikki in my captions before because she is, in her words as well as mine, putting her money where her mouth is by consistently showcasing diversity in the label's communications. Not just for a season or one campaign but as a permanent brand value. Representation in fashion isn't something that only appeared on my radar once disabilities did. Of course, I saw things through another lens but the lack of diversity in the fashion industry is something that often baffled me as a non-disabled consumer too. Why brands didn't make a better effort to 'speak to' the variety people buying their clothes, never made any sense to me. Sure, I understood the theoretical psychology behind aspiration blah, blah, blah but from an economic and financial perspective it still made zero sense. Any brand strategist, creative director, marketing manager etc (particularly for women's fashion) who is still operating out of that narrow archaic #aspirational sales model, please take note. It's transparent AF and your consumers are more intelligent than to fall for outdated BS sales tactics that make them feel like 💩. I've heard all the excuses over the years from people who said it can't be done but Nikki and #StylingYouTheLabel have proven that it's not impossible to do diversity well in mainstream fashion. Importantly, Nikki recognises that diversity is about so much more than a colour or a size. Yes those two things are VERY important but so too is age, ability, belief, background and more. "Clothes won't change the world but the women who wear them will." 💗 - Anne Klein I see Anne's point and recognise that, at certain times, fashion can get tediously frivolous or even a little ummm... errr... full of itself. But when it comes to inclusive fashion (designed with disabled people in mind), clothes can in fact change lives and the world of the individuals who wear them. Never underestimate the freedom and independence that a well designed garment gives people like me with disabilities or other challenges that impact their fashion choices. In that way, clothes can change the world. Granted, these garments aren't curing disease or ending the pandemic but they are providing often unattainable dignity and modesty as well as the aforementioned independence. Meet #changemaker Jessie Sadler (above right), who founded @shopchristinastephens - Australia's newest inclusive fashion label for disabled and non-disabled women. I'm so proud of Jessie and her team. In less than a year after launching, (during a phucking global pandemic, no less) the collection made it to London Fashion Week with the incredible @samantabullock and here at @mercedesbenzfashionmonth (when this pic was taken). I was thrilled to be on the main runway with everyone else for the finale show. Those of us with visible or invisible disabilities weren't hidden away in a back room somewhere on a “special disability catwalk” 😝 to simply tick the diversity box. That’s not what true inclusion looks like. #representationmatters Disabled and non-disabled models all wore the collection on the night which perfectly reflects the range of abilities who wear the Christina Stephens label. A little bird tells me that next season’s collection is going to be very different and very awesome! So I can’t wait to see it. To all of the #changemakers out there and everyone creating #visibilityfordisability in whatever way you can, keep being incredible because you ARE changing the world. The #fashion industry (like so much else in pop culture) is such a powerful and influential force when it comes to setting social standards and therefore, moulding community attitudes. Changing attitudes isn't only going to happen in big government policy documents. Sometimes, it's lots of little inclusions throughout popular culture as well. Everything helps. I spend a lot of time disrupting the discourse around disability with my writing and speaking but this kinda thing is always a fun way to shift public preconceptions just a little bit more! As excited as I am to be in NYFW, I'm also embarrassed. Aussies like to think our country's fairly progressive but once again, Australia's woeful ability to evolve has been highlighted on a world stage. Disclaimer: Not ALL brands/businesses but most. Australia's fashion industry is making us look backwards and narrow-minded (and don't even get me started on other mainstream pop culture over here). Case in point... While the world's biggest fashion shows (New York, Milan, Moscow and others) have been including physical ♿ for years, AUS still refuses to move forward. Instead opting only for variations in skin tone or size (seemingly more or palatable forms of diversity). While those changes are commendable, they're simply not enough. For years, Aussie #changemakers like @madelinesmodelling_ and others have been going overseas to work because the AUS fashion industry is stuck in a bygone era. So what do we do about it? I 💗 a rant but I also 💗 talking about solutions. In 👆 last week's article, the #journalist and I discussed the problems along with solutions for those who WANT to be inclusive of ♿ but just don't know HOW. One tip was CONSISTENCY. You might have seen brands/businesses use a ♿ in their advertising/marketing/etc just ONCE to tick the diversity box then assume the job's done. That's when it becomes tokenism. That's also not how our world looks. You don't only see a person with disabilities once every 2 years (same applies to other minority groups). Again, I emphasise that inclusion isn't just a 'nice' moral thing to do. It's a $avvy and $trategic business $trategy capturing a previously untapped 20% of the population! I've sat in enough boardrooms and met with enough suits to know that for some, it's all about the bottom line. And that's fair enough - it's their job! Consulting + collaborating with progressive brands and businesses who WANT ADVICE on truthfully including ♿ on BOTH sides of the camera is something I love doing. With MILLIONS of great ♿ people available, we can make consistent representation a reality. So c'mon AUS fashion, media and other pop culture, please lift your game. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸? Despite time and budget constraints with #Andyscatwalk I think we did a pretty good job at representing #fashionforall with our models. But I will concede that it was more difficult than I had realised it was going to be to create a truly inclusive catwalk: I believe our age range covered 20 to 82; body types and dress sizes from 6 to 24. We could have done better with a wider range of ethnicities and I would have liked to include more trans and non-binary models. I'm looking forward to seeing how we do in comparison to the Fashion Spot seasonal figures when they are released - have the AW 2020 shows done better than last season with diverse casting? What's the overall direction with including a real refection of the street on the runways? Does it still feel predominantly tokenism? In a Vogue business piece this week it was noted that in NYFW 'noise around age diversity on the runways was relatively quiet.' Some designers are being vocal about the issue. “It’s important for a modern brand to have age diversity; it makes it more authentic,” Demna Gvasalia recently told Vogue. “When we walk down the street, we don’t necessarily see people all of the same age in groups.” No we don't, but I'm casting for our #powerdressing catwalk at @tateexchange in April where all the models will be over 50. It's proving hard to find models on the agency's books who cover all the other diversity needs within this age range. If you are a model over 50 who isn't size 8, white with grey or white hair, or a classic silver fox, or indeed any over 50 model who embraces difference please get in touch. That's not to say I won't be casting classic over 50 models just that I really love to mix it up and show that fashion for all is what we do as standard at #GOLDIEmagazine. The mood in Australia right now is pretty sombre (with the bushfires still raging). Combine that with the Iranian/Trump situation and it's a bit difficult to be overly joyful or optimistic on Insta. (Especially when our Prime Minister and his government have has just spent a phuck load of money on an advertising campaign to boost his/their public approval rating). Anyway, I digress. As I was saying, when 💩 is happening in the present that's our of my control, I sometimes look to past memories for little pockets of sunshine. A hug from Karishma, a kiss from Ren and a coffee with mum are just some of the small things that make me smile. Do you think that disability is the LEAST PALATABLE 'type' of diversity there is? I sure don't but it has definitely been my experience across multiple forms of popular culture, like mainstream media and the fashion industry. I remember listening to an interview with @chelseabonner from @bellatalentmanagement who talked about the inclusion of curve/plus-size people in mainstream popular culture. She mentioned #paraphrasing when certain photographers would refuse to photograph larger women (basically anyone with particular dimensions) because they didn't want to 'tarnish' their perfect photographic portfolios. There aren't enough 💩 or 🤬 emojis to express how I felt about that but fortunately, times have changed. Once I'd stopped cringing and shaking my head, I remember wondering if similar BS discrimination now applied to disability. It wasn't long before I got to test this theory for myself. So here's what happened... I was asked to get professional photos taken and although I know some awesome photographers, this was specifically for fashion photography. The last time I'd worked with a fashion photographer was pre-disability as a model in #Melbourne so I reached out to designers I knew for local recommendations. . 📷 #tbt when I interviewed designers at a runway show. As I told @kirstie_clements for an interview in @bazzaraustralia - "I contacted the photographers recommended by designers and replies came thick and fast until I mentioned that I was physically disabled. . The responses stopped immediately." FK. My theory was correct. I was disgusted but not surprised. I know disability can make people uncomfortable and brands, businesses, outdated photographers etc don't want to be associated with discomfort. But I also know that discomfort ONLY EXISTS because we don't have enough #visibilityfordisability in mainstream popular culture to NORMALISE it and REMOVE FEAR of the unknown. Last Friday's post has more on this. All I want for Christmas is for mainstream popular culture to better reflect the society we live in. It's good for people, branding and business profits! Have you heard of conscious consumerism? I'll explain that below but first, here's another little win for the inclusion of disability in mainstream popular culture. . Thank you HARPER'S BAZZAR @bazaaraustralia for your piece on my work as a sometimes model and always diversity and disability advocate. Of course, #inclusivefashion got a big mention as did the disappointing reality that the Australian fashion industry is somewhat stagnating by not including disability in fashion conversations #linkinbio Ok, I hate to be blunt #sorrynotsorry but I've been at so many fashion events and seen tons of 'diversity' media spreads where one model of colour and one curvier model is on the catwalk (or in the magazine) to tick the diversity box - job done. It's transparent AF, cringe-worthy and I call BS to that. As I've said in my @HufffPost article, disability is often forgotten in the diversity debate. I understand that the fashion industry (and other popular culture) doesn't exist to drive public awareness and provide social commentary. So if your a designer, editor or event organiser who doesn't give a 💩 about social responsibility and how your work impacts public attitudes, perhaps you'd prefer to think of it in terms the impact on your P&L statements, circulation, profit margins, public brand perception and the noticeable rise in conscious consumerism. Yes, conscious consumerism is a thing and if you (as a designer, editor or event organiser etc) don't give a 💩 about the bigger picture,, your consumer base does. They're spending where there's evidence of positive social impact. 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 Years ago fashion used to be fun. You'd lark about at a show and the love, energy and vibrancy generated excitement which lead to sales. Somewhere along the way it was decided that fashion wasn't supposed to be fun. And whilst you're at it make it homogeneous - white, skinny, tall - definitely no smiling. And get the audience to look the same as well. That same sense of sameness is wrong. And it's boring. And not egalitarian. We all wear clothes, we all want to see gorgeous outfits on diverse ideas of beauty. We want to be included and we want to see everyone invited to the party. I have heard so many times why inclusive and diverse shows are too difficult, costly, unrealistic blah blah blah. Well tonight's epic #londonqueerfashionshow showed that if you put your mind to it you can do a catwalk which covers every conceivable angle. Absolutely brilliant casting. Thank you so much @londonqueerfashionshow for inviting us. Fashion used to feel like this when it was motivated by the love of creativity not huge greedy profits. All these clothes are adapted, hand made, minimalist look & sustainable with natural dyes. It’s the @kazkojima_ collection from the graduation show last Thursday at @csm_news All the students did brilliantly especially the winner. I just think the university and the judges should have a tick ✅ list that would make more students design inclusively and more sustainably not just creatively. Nowadays we cannot ignore that we are 7 billion people and should be fully included. Here's one the fancy-pants events that I mentioned in my last post. We took this before I headed back stage to get changed and went on the runway #visibilityfordisability #representationmatters 12 hours later (swipe to see next image) I was back to the usual. Drinking ALL the coffee in my standard uniform (activewear - even on the days I'm not being very active) and doing the grocery shopping without first consulting a hair and make-up artist 😜. My #firstworldproblem of the decade is that my favourite coffee (purchased weekly) is on the TOP shelf 😖. I only stand for the really important things in life... Walking (stumbling) down the aisle on my wedding day, transferring to weights machines at the gym and getting my coffee off the top shelf at the supermarket 😂. I hope you all have a wonderful day 😘xx
