Atul Dodiya featured Gandhi in many of his works. For him the father of the nation represents a philosophical underpinning for what the country stood for at the time of its independence and the subsequent trajectory thereafter. The work ‘Bapu’ (literally meaning father in Gujarati), painted at the turn of the 21st century, is a symbolic look at India in the new century, far from the accepted ideals of the past, yet still rooted in the conceptual grounding of how Gandhi defined the aspirations of the nation at a point. He sees Gandhi as almost a conceptual artist of his time, with a flair for performance art. Bharti Kher’s large sculpture of the elephant has become a symbol of post modern voice of women artists in India. In this work she skilfully combines the social and environmental changes the country has been grappling with since the turn of the century. Titled, The Skin Speaks a Language Not of its Own (2006), she creates a female elephant, prone and vulnerable- away from the heard. Both the subject of the sculpture and its scale (55 7/8” x 180” x 76 3/4”) draws attention. It appears to a be simplistic image - but it makes a deep impression in the mind - we remember it, and it pops up spontaneously, posing uneasy questions. Bharti’s trademark use of bindis in fibreglass has been used to create the sculpture. Meet the Jury: Sabih Ahmed Sabih Ahmed (b. 1984, India) is an independent researcher, and the Associate Director and Curator of Ishara Art Foundation in Dubai. His curatorial work and research focus on modern and contemporary art of South Asia through diverse itineraries, languages and inter-disciplinary formations. Prior to joining Ishara Art Foundation, he was a Senior Researcher and Projects Manager at Asia Art Archive from 2009 to 2019 where he was involved in the establishment of AAA in India (AAA in I) in New Delhi. Jitish Kallat has made the post modern art space in India entirely his own. His works and exhibition cut across generations and genre - the images becoming the voice for strata of society. In this work Dawn Chorus - 24 (2007-08), he revisits his commentary on city dwellers, alone and in crowds, through young children selling books at traffic lights, who must navigate the daily chaos of survival.
