Queensland. A day out in Brisbane on my mission to try #Australianwhisky, and headed to @senseoftaste_ Portside, Hamilton, to find a very impressive selection of whisky. Thanks to Ashleigh, I tried a trio of #Australiansinglemalt from Morris Whisky in Rutherglen, Victoria. I sampled the @morriswhisky Australian #Singlemalt, a malted barley blend of Westminster and Gairdner, matured in a combination of French and American oak ex-wine barrels from their own wineries (40%). Next their Muscat Barrel release, matured in French & American oak ex-wine casks, finished in barrels which held Morris' Muscat fortified wine (46%) - very tasty indeed. Then their Tokay Barrel release, aged mainly in French oak ex-red wine casks, finished in barrels that held their 15 year old Morris Cellar Reserve Grand Topaque (Tokay) (48%). I also tried Adelaide, South Australia's @78degreesdistillery Australian Whiskey, Batch 4, a combination of unmalted barley and 6 specialty malts (Biscuit, Supernova, Redback, Toffee, Crystal & Chocolate), matured in ex-red wine American & French oak barrels (44%) - 78 degrees is the boiling point of alcohol in Celsius. Queensland. My mission to try #Australianwhisky took me to White Lies Brewing II in Seventeen Mile Rocks, Western Brisbane, as Iโd heard they had an #australiansinglemalt. I tried the brewery's first whisky release, Ginesis Whisky, from their pale ale distilled & laid down in 2020, 2yrs 9ms in a #singlecask French oak barrel that previously held red wine, Prieto Picudo from @hiddencreekwine on the Granite Belt, Queensland (45%). I also tried a very tasty beer, their Vanilla Espresso Imperial Stout at a mighty 10%. Amber Laneโs tagline for their Equinox expression is โPerfectly Balancedโ and it inspired me to get creative on an afternoon whisky stroll and take a few playful photos. Iโm really pleased with how they turned out. โPerfectly balancedโ is an apt description for the Equinox - the sweetness, spice and fruit is in harmony and the profile is consistent right the way through from the nose to the palate to the finish. Itโs also a great balance between being gentle enough for those who want an easy going drinking experience while providing enough flavor, texture and complexity to satisfy more experienced whisky drinkers. Itโs fun and approachable while maintaining a very elegant presence. Itโs Australian whiskies like the Equinox that make me so excited about our local whisky industry and Iโm thrilled to be able to reach for something local that is such a great crowd pleaser. My tasting notes for the Equinox are: Nose: Honey, pastry and nuts. A little raisins. Vanilla, butterscotch toffee. Perfumed florals. White pepper. A touch of creamy vanilla as it opens up and the florals and spices fade off. Palate: Elegant spices, herbal notes, oak, barley sugars, butterscotch, dried figs, honey, spices come back in with white pepper and cardamon. Some dried orange peel. Then Melbourneโs @nedwhisky a blend of Australian corn, wheat and barley, aged in virgin oak (40%). Finally from Sydney, @coastalstonewhisky Australian Single Malt โElement Seriesโ First Release, Batch 2, matured in ex-Kentucky bourbon casks filled in their first year of distilling. Very nice too. I tried another Aussie dram, this time from Tasmania & @larkdistillery 'Symphony Nยบ1โ. A blended malt made with a trio of #Tasmanian #SingleMalts - from what I can gather, one of their own House of Lark, another from the Nant distillery, and the third from Overeem distillery - 5-6yrs, matured in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon, sherry and port casks (40.2%). A good few visits would be required to try the page and a half of Australian whisky aloneโฆ. the Scotch would need weeks! Day 2 brings our attention to Gospel Whisky, proudly representing Melbourne with their focus on Rye. This distillery offers a special dram for our Anzac Day Commemoration set. Renowned for their exceptional special releases their latest offering is a true gem, not to be overlooked. While Gospelโs regular range is undoubtedly delightful, thereโs an undeniable allure to encountering one of their uniquely bottled creations. Their creation is a 4.1-year-old, 100% Rye whisky. It spent 2 years in new American oak barrels, heavily toasted and medium charred, followed by 2.1 years in a 300L Apera cask sourced from Barossa. Prior to transfer, the cask was diluted from 62%. This deliberate dilution allows for the extraction of more water-soluble sugars during the finishing process, resulting in a softened flavour profile for the whisky. Tomorrow, as part of our Anzac Day lineup, The Gospel will be featured among the seven esteemed Australian distilleries. Explore their essence through our virtual tasting set, offering 30ml samples for a comprehensive experience. What does a totally new style of whisky look like? Sadly, much the same as any other. However, what if you fill a Virgin Hungarian oak cask at 63.4% ABV new make. Let it become whisky, fill the gap created by Angels Share with water before tannins become apparent and bring the whisky down to 56% in the barrel. Method developed, researched and adapted by Junior H @duckettbuckett . What does a totally new style of whisky smell like? Vanilla cream caramels. What does a totally new style of whisky taste like? I tried my next Australian whisky, again from Sydney's @archierosedistillingco, Smoked Heritage Rye Malt Whisky. The 14th release in their 'Trials & Exceptionsโ range, using local malted barley & NSW heritage rye grain, smoked with native Stringybark wood. โRest dayโ on our climbing trip means a hike in the nearby Grampians National Park. We walked up to the Pinnacle lookout via the โSilent Streetโ canyon section. This is an unchallenging, tourist friendly trek through the type of rock formations that have made this area popular. Our walk culminated with views overlooking the township of Halls Gap way below. Overeem Stout Cask Finish II marries three stout cask finishes, blending hints of liquorice, malt, and molasses. This single malt is rich, silky, and promises a delicious coffee and choc malt finish. Hellyerโs Road This 20-year-old Sherry cask finish single malt features 16 years in ex-bourbon barrels and an additional 4 years in ex-Oloroso Spanish sherry barrels. It offers a natural cask strength of 61% with a sophisticated nose and lingering finish. Bellarine In collaboration with Scotchmanโs Hill winery, this whisky showcases new make notes of creamy and buttery whisky with hints of toasted sourdough, honey, vanilla teacake, cashews, almonds, red berries, and cinnamon. Backwoods A 3-year-old single malt aged in a Chardonnay cask, offering an ABV of 56.7%. This whisky presents a captivating and smooth sip with complex nuances of the wine barrel and malt. Gospel This 4.1-year-old rye whiskey is matured in NAO and a 300L Apera cask from Barossa. Crafted from 100% Rye Grain Bill, it delivers an ABV of 51.7% with a harmonious blend of flavours. Hobart A 6.9-year-old single malt whisky representing Hobartโs first Muscat cask release. Distilled in May 2017 and bottled in April 2024 at an ABV of 57.5%, it offers a complex, velvety experience with an exquisite harmony of flavours.
