Dies bietet Gelegenheit, Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen, sich zusammen über Erreichtes zu freuen und darüber zu diskutieren, wie wir noch weiterkommen. Wie bereits letztes Jahr wird die FATart Fair von einem Rahmenprogramm begleitet, in dem FATart gemeinsam mit Expert*innen und mit dem Publikum über die aktuelle Situation im Schweizerischen und Internationalen Kunstbetrieb diskutiert. Eine Diskussionsrunde ist der Frage gewidmet, wie sich verschiedene Akteur*innen für mehr Diversität im Kunstbetrieb einsetzen, was die Probleme sind, auf die sie treffen und wie sie damit umgehen. This beautiful Mexican painter was most recognized for her vivid and brilliantly coloured self-portraits that confronted themes including identity, the human body, and death. A vintage menu for Houston's Black Angus Steakhouse It was a menu similar to this one, which was stolen by International Artists owner Bill Dillard that would serve as the basis for the cover of the 13th Floor Elevators' 1969 album--which would be the final LP released by the band--an album which would be an almost exclusively Stacy Sutherland effort, titled Bull of the Woods (Stacy was the Bull of the Woods) With Tommy and Roky having fled to San Francisco and the band still under contract to deliver another LP (originally this was to be another concept album dreamt up by Tommy, known as Beauty and the Beat), Stacy, as the sole elevator, went into the former Gold Star Studios in Houston to record material he'd mostly written by himself. IA, along with investing in the Love Street club and turning it into a franchise with locations in other Texas cities, had purchased Gold Star, rechristening it "International Artists Studio" during the mid to late 1960s, moving their former base of operations at the Americana Building to their new record studio for a brief period. But they would move soon again and settle at a building located on Richmond Avenue in Montrose, Houston, which sat right across from a Black Angus steakhouse. After asking Stacy his intentions for the LP sleeve, he told Dillard and Noble Ginther that he wanted a black silhouette image of a longhorn, which would serve as a symbol of the band's Texan heritage. Dillard instead copies an image from one of the restaurants menus he pocketed one day dining across the street, veering off from the original intention Stacy had. The Americana Building, having undergone some recent renovations, as seen from Dallas Street on November 21, 2021 The Americana Building would serve as the main office for the Texas psychedelic rock record label, International Artists, from Houston, Texas. The label, whose full name seems to have been The International Artists Recording Corporation (and alternatively, The International Artists Recording Group), was originally started back in October 1965 by Houston record producer and sound engineer Fred Carroll, who created it for the Baytown surf band he managed known as the Coastliners. But its real history would begin shortly after the label's first release, the Coastliners' single "Alright", when Fred had no further use for it and sought to recoup some of his expenses by selling it to someone else. A hodgepodge group of Houston businessmen hoping to get into the record business to make some money, would answer the call and purchased the record label from Carroll in early 1966. The labels new owners would consist of lawyers Bill Dillard and Noble Ginther Jr., recording studio owner Lester J. Martin, and music publisher Ken Skinner. The first big catch for the label was the 13th Floor Elevators, which they effectively steal out from Gordon Bynum who had scouted them in January 1966 and facilitated their first recordings, creating the record label, Contact (as in, contact high). The Elevators sign with IA in May of 1966. In October of 1966 they would recruit Lelan Rogers as the band's new producer right as they record their first LP, The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators. On November 20, 1967, 54 years ago yesterday, the Elevators would give their only real print interview to Larry Supulvado and Cal Stanley of Houston's Mother Zine, with the men interviewing Roky, Tommy, and Danny Thomas, who were the only members present, at the IA offices in the Americana Building. When Danny Thomas initially joined the band, he had to travel to Houston and find the Americana Building to meet with Bill Dillard and Noble Ginther after being suggested by Stacy. #internationartists #americanabuilding #mothermagazine #houston #13thfloorelevators

Also for the 4th ART MATTERS round, it was not easy for us to choose only 15 artists for our online exhibition out of the many great submissions we received in our 4th Open Artist Call, and then to choose a single winner.... It was definitely fun to discover and get to know so many great artists! There is so much remarkable art out there, we can't show it all in our gallery. But the ART MATTERS series allows us to present many artistic positions from all over the world to a wider audience online twice a year for a little more than 2 weeks. Many thanks to all of you who follow this project, some of you for 4 issues by now, and many thanks also – most of all – to the participating artists, especially to our Top 15, namely (in order of their daily posts): Alireza Elahi, Katja Pál, Bislacchi, Amir Chasson, Mariejon de Jong-Buijs, Aaron Kaveh Ossia, Molly Thomson, René Korten, Stephen Wozniak, Peter Evans, Eva Dijkstra, Beverly Rautenberg, Alan Greenberg, Clemens Gritl and last but not least Sharon Haward. But in the end there can only be one and we have chosen the young Iranian artist Alireza Elahi as the ART MATTERS 4 winner in an extremely close decision. With his submitted work "untitled" (2020, acrylic and spray paint on primed canvas, 150 x 100 cm) and his artist statement as well as his overall artistic approach/work, he completely convinced us and we are happy to invite him to a thematic group exhibition in our gallery in Cologne in 2022 - more information to follow soon!
