Have you tried waking on the tarmac bear footed in this weather? I am not usually one to usually jump on the preach band wagons but honestly I am in utter disbelief that folk are still walking their four legged flurries in this heat. Burns, sunstroke and dehydration - is it really worth the risk. Geriatric dogs are at increased risk of these issues. They honestly won’t thank you for taking them out in this heat. Nor, will they hold it against you if you don’t take them out. I have two breeds which are notorious for mental and physical stimulation (GSD & Belgium Malanois) some low impact, mental stimulated repetitive exercise suffice in this extreme heat that we are not habituated to. Happy Scholarly Saturday everyone! After all the positive feedback that I got from last week's lesson, I have realized that humans do better when important lessons are repeated every so often. So with that in mind, we are going to revisit a lesson from last summer. Since it's starting to get hot here (it's 90°F, 32°C today) and much of Europe is in the middle of a heat wave, I thought we'd discuss walkies. It's time to remember that the sidewalk and roads are very hot on our little hands and feet. Now, this might make you think we should wear boots to protect us, but you'd be wrong. Most of us don't like boots. So instead of torturing us with boots or shoes or socks, I suggest you carry us. Fortunately you have options for doing this. You can carry us in your arms. You can put us in a backpack or a sling. Or if you want to treat us like the royalty we are, you can carry us around on a litter. Whichever method you choose, make sure we a comfortable and happy. Constantly telling us how wonderful we are while you are carrying us around is a nice touch. For those times when you don't want to carry us everywhere, you can push us around in a stroller. I love my stroller! I can eat snackies while I see the sights! It's very convenient. And just to make sure all the humans in the Southern Hemisphere don't think they're going to be able to avoid this lesson, I'm here to tell you that we don't like cold hands and feet either. That's right! Everyone experiencing winter gets to carry their furbabies around and keep them warm. No boots! Just lots of warm snuggles. So for this week's homework, I want you to carry your furbabies around wherever we want to go. And tell us how gorgeous we are while you're at it. It's going to be a fabulous week! Welcome to Scholarly Saturday everyone! Today's lesson is about paw care. This is an important subject for me right now because of the summer heat. It's going to be in the 90's (30°C's) in the DC area for the foreseeable future. It's important to remember our little paws when it's hot outside. The pavement gets very hot very quickly when it's hot. If you don't want to walk barefoot outside, we probably don't either. Our little paws can get burned. They can blister. We don't like that idea at all! Now some of you might think the solution is to put "summer shoes" on us. This is a bad idea! First of all, not all of us like shoes. Second, those shoes can make us hot too. So, the best solution to this heat problem is to just let us stay inside when it's hot! If you do feel the need to make us go out in the heat, please don't make us walk on the pavement. I think a nice "carry" is reasonable! You may carry us everywhere! Yeah! That's it! We like carries! Now, while we are experiencing very hot weather, the other half of the world is in the middle of winter. Winter is cold. Our feet get cold. We don't like that! I realize a lot of humans think the solution to this problem is boots. Just like summer shoes, winter boots can be a bad idea. Lots of us don't like boots. If your fur baby likes to wear boots, then sure, they can wear them and be happy. But even those who don't mind boots might not want to wear them every day. So what to do if your fur baby doesn't want to wear boots? Carry them! Winter is a fabulous time for a carry! So what have we learned today? We learned that fur babies like to be carried! For this week's homework, consider your baby's feet! If you wouldn't be comfortable walking barefoot, remember that we won't either. So this week, carry us wherever we'd like to go!
