Ivy - hands down the worst plant to ever grace our current and last house. I'll never understand a) why people plant it and b) why it was left to grow so bad (see second pic from when we moved in). It had actually grown across to the house and under the sunroom/kitchen roof causing havoc underneath the tiles because destroying two garages wasn't enough for it. All sorted (kinda) now, pitch garage needs to have the brrickwork on one side rebuilt along with the roof and then we can build a flat EPDM roof on the garage extension. #oldhouselife #ivysucks #diy

Garden chronicles pt13: The War of the Ivy There is so much Ivy in this garden! It has been left to grow and has choked many a tree. This weekend saw a war on the Ivy be raged cutting it back from old and live trees. Although the Ivy covered tree trunks at the back of the decking naturalise the boundary to the downstairs maisonette’s garden (and the birds love the berries) the height of them means I can’t see my garden from my (upstairs) kitchen window (and everyone needs a nice view to get them through the washing up right?). So I decided to lower them to the level of the garage. The start of that process this weekend was to remove the crazy amount of Ivy that was growing ... and it was a lot!!Luckily my very agile, apt T-shirt wearing, tree climbing friend did the hard graft up in the trees, leaving me safely on the ground to occasionally foot the ladder and bag it all up (six large bags and another mountain behind!). It's not really possible to describe the mess that was behind our little house. The neighbor behind had been growing ivy like a houseplant! The ivy had grown so big & thick it became a giant wall surrounding our house. When we purchased the house we could not see through. It had grown up the trees (thanks to various wood contraptions installed encouraging it to grow). Two months of weekends it took us to cut it off best we could. We dug the roots out for two straight days and had a tree service cut it off the trees. The house was cold and dark inside from all the ivy blocking the sunshine. Brad and his carpenters built two new fences. The house is sunny & bright now and it has truly been the best home improvement to date. We thought the giant dead tree removal was going to be the most dramatic improvement, but it was actually the ivy. Ocean view from our living room now! Remember that beautiful forest ecosystem I shared yesterday? (If not, have a look at the introduction to SMONECTEN on my last post.) Well there’s a harsh reality that many of our ecosystems face - invasive species! Invasive species are foreign plants and animals that invade areas and do not allow the indigenous inhabitants any space to thrive. English ivy is a thick ground cover that smothers native plants and seeds. Its ultra competitive and hoards light and nutrients for itself so there is no way for other native plants to grow. It also tends to climb and restricts the growth of trees. It can take down full grown trees if it is not dealt with! The good news is we can tackle invasive species by conducting environmental restoration. This is the act of removing invasive species and planting native plants or allowing native plants to naturally come back. The photos show how I cut the ivy all the way around the tree trunk so atleast anything above that will die and fall off the tree. This gives the tree some space to breath and ivy only fruits when it grows vertically. There is much more work to do by removing this carpet though. Hand pulling is usually best. There are so many layers to restoration. It is healing for the land and for ourselves. It is physical decolonization. It is a metaphor for reclaiming land and identity. Ivy sucks. It isn't easy to get rid of and it is a labor intensive process. You must be as thorough as possible, getting as much of the plant out as physically possible. I usually don't even bother with herbicide since over the counter products like glyphosate don't do much in the long run. After the ivy is finally removed, I rake the bare soil to grade, cover with cardboard, then a thick layer of mulch. This will area will be in great shape in the spring for planting native perennials. Today has mostly been about the chopping up of stuff - the tree I cut down yesterday has been stripped of all its branches and all the decent sized wood has been saved to season off for the fire. I don’t understand contractors who don’t return calls nor show up for estimate appointments. 🤷♀️ The guys we hired have been doing work for our neighbor for a few years. He wasn’t a bit more pricy than the other quote - contractor 3&4 were “no shoes” on their appointments. He’s a more known quantity. The fence he put up at our neighbor’s place looks nice. . . They’re off getting posts and an auger. Set those today and tomorrow the stringers and pickets go up. And the remaining ivy will be gone, too.
