We got so incredibly lucky whale watching on Salish Sea today. We saw 18 orcas from four different pods. The first set of videos is of three groups together - 2 pods and a set of brothers who travel together - (brothers 125a and 128, pods T146 and T75b). The second set of videos is T36a with 2 calves. This isn’t even a season that you’re always guaranteed to see Orcas. This was one of the most amazing experiences spending three hours with them in true PNW weather. A familiar fluke… Big Mama has returned! Humpback whale BCY0324 “Big Mama” is back and was spotted with another humpback whale (second photo). She was first documented in our waters in 1997, and was one of the first humpback whales to return to the Salish Sea after nearly 100 years! “For a long time, humans have wondered about the possibility of intelligent life on other planets while ignoring the intelligent life on this one.” - “The Killer Whale Who Changed the World” by Mark Leiren-Young This photo is from a day watching 4 transient killer whale matrilines (T35As, T36As, T38As, & T123s) hunt a stellar sea lion in Haro Strait. It was utterly amazing see, as during these hunts, the whales are incredible surface active. Lots of breaching, tail slaps, & spyhops during the encounter that made it incredibly memorable. These predators are an incredible force witness. 🛥️ Whale watching disclaimer: Vessels are required to maintain a distance of 200-400 meters (varying regulations for Canada & the US, so l’m giving the range of distances). These photos were taken from a boat & have been zoomed in. If you want to go whale watching, always look up local regulations & do your own research on the companies you want to go out with. Deep connections formed upon delicate threads of a web, stretching intimately through time and space, extending to all corners of the Earth. So too is motherhood: a powerful connecting force that drives us instinctively towards the creation and nurture of life itself. As mothers we provide, we sacrifice. We instinctively flow. We grow and build mountains in our lives only to have them eventually carried downstream, to seed life in distant rivers that we cannot fathom from our place in the web. In the Cheakamus River motherhood abounds. A black bear feeds her young, perhaps completely unaware that the Chum salmon she feeds upon is also there to seed hers. After the salmon deposits her eggs her body will fertilize the forest, feed dozens of species and ensure future generations of life in the valley. The sacred Mt. Garibali (or Nch’ḵay̓ “the grimy one” in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sníchim) sits high above the Sea to Sky Valley. As a mother to us all her volcanic rocks weather away year after year, releasing silts and minerals that feed the lakes, rivers, estuaries, and the sea. Our bodies grow and are nurtured by this very water, by the life that cycles here, and by Mother Earth herself. Who had "before the end of April" in the "when will J-Pod return pool"? I don't think anybody did! After heading west a week ago, we thought that might be it for our visits from J-Pod for quite some time, but they sure always keep us guessing. On this drizzly morning we were pleasantly surprised to find J-Pod on the west side of San Juan Island, and they took their time heading north in Haro Strait against a strong ebb tide. Last week was our traditional springtime volunteer outing at the Henry Island Preserve, which we try to coincide with Earth Day as closely as possible. It's always a great time to be out there, with wildflowers beginning to show off their prime bloom, trailside vegetation leafing out, and the sun shining over it all with a side of a gentle breeze. And what a day it was! SJPT staff and a wonderful group of volunteers tidied up the trails, scoured the beaches for washed up litter, and checked on the overall state of the preserve. It was a tremendous way to spend another day on Earth! Thank you to all that participated and rest assured that there will be more opportunities coming up to join us out at lovely places like this. April 8, morning tour, 4 Ever Wild: This is a female killer whale known as T172. On this day, we encountered her hunting near Race Rocks with her usual travel companion, adult male T117A.
