The sun sets on the 2018/19 academic year, and I now have two full weeks completely free of lessons (one spent at home, the other in France with my whole family) before summer catch-up classes start in August. . My followers have been shooting up over the last few days, so I thought it would be a good time to introduce myself to anyone new to my profile. . I’m Kate, a 27 year old teacher, born in England but now living in the Netherlands. In the years in between, I’ve lived in Scotland and Switzerland, and spent a lot of time travelling with my job as a private tutor. I’ve travelled around Europe and spent two months living in Hong Kong at the end of 2016, which was an amazing experience. . I spent yesterday afternoon playing with Toot-Toot cars with my 2-year-old nephew in the U.K: one of the best ways to switch off from work for a while. The variety of lessons I teach now is one of my favourite things about this job: today I taught a Latin class to a group of homeschooled children, then planned for a lesson with a university student who needs help with her Ancient Greek Art dissertation, then made an 11+ English vocabulary list. . Interesting article in @guardian today. As a travelling homeschool tutor for the last three years, I saw the ups and downs of homeschooling from a teacher’s, parent’s and child’s perspective. . It can be a great opportunity to enrich children’s lives by having the freedom to follow the path which their learning naturally takes them. But I also saw how important and difficult it can be to maintain strong social connections when children are homeschooled and not in the natural friend-making environments of the school playground or lunchroom. . For my future children, I have considered homeschooling. But my experience and knowledge of the Dutch education system so far has been nothing but positive, so I think I’ll be going along the traditional route. . Tomorrow I have my first online Latin class with a group of homeschoolers, who are doing so for a wide variety of reasons. AWOL for a few days while I showed my parents around my beautiful new country. Today I received a message from my first client as owner of Kate’s Tutor Room, to say thank you for my help with his SAT English preparation. He got his scores back today and had done much better than he expected. . I get a great sense of satisfaction from knowing that the dedication which I put into planning and teaching every single one of my lessons can have a long-lasting impact on my students’ futures lives. After two fun English lessons this morning, I had the afternoon off to enjoy a walk in the forest near our home, on the Dutch/German border. . It was a much-appreciated breather before my busy week begins tomorrow. As it’s half term for a lot of schools in the U.K., several students have asked for intensive (daily or every other day) lessons. At the end of my busiest week so far as a self-employed teacher, I can definitely relate to this. . The fact that I fell asleep while we watched my favourite Netflix documentary tonight shows just how “consumed” I am this Friday evening. . It got me thinking about how I stay focused while #workingfromhome • Take regular breaks, including walks outdoors to get fresh air to my brain. • Stay hydrated: I usually keep a jug of water on my desk, sometimes with an infusion to make it taste even better and encourage me to drink more! • Vary my tasks: I teach a wide variety of subjects, and I never plan two lessons on the same topic in a row, as it can get repetitive. With my business growing rapidly, I’ve had to get even better at staying ahead with planning and making sure I’m on top of all my students’ requirements for their upcoming lessons. I just watched a great TED X talk by Azul Terronez, discussing “What makes a good teacher great?” He’s not only an engaging speaker, but he also raises some really interesting points about our role as teachers. We’re supposed to be CONTENT EXPERTS (that’s one of the reasons we get hired), but, more important to our students is for us to be DEEP UNDERSTANDERS. Being both of these simultaneously is, to me, what makes a great teacher. .
