Two things: Saltburn painting!!! AND I have art up at Fountain Square Brewing!! When I saw “Saltburn” I knew I wanted to paint something inspired by it. The scene I wanted to paint didn’t translate well in my style so I went with something a little more succinct. The Midsummer’s Night Dream party is when I started to see Oliver as a different creature entirely. From that point forward the story is disorienting. I found that I had been just as deceived as the residences of Saltburn, and trying to figure out what was next if this wasn’t the end of it. On the art side of things: This is a sizeable painting, measuring 20x20. With a larger space I’ve found doing a big portrait can be dicey. When an image is small I feel like it’s easier to find balance. With a big canvas I have to think a lot more about how I can utilize that space without it feeling too dense or too empty. August 2019 is when we pulled the trigger on our intended garage mural! We were out of town when I saw Jules just left Indy. One mural didn’t get her to come back. We roped in our neighbors Chadolphus🌹 through a string of texts knowing they had shared their intention of having their nephew paint a rose on theirs. Mary🌻 was an immediate YES, she’d always dreamed of a mural! My wheels were spinning at that point and my eyes were on the original old barn behind us. I knew that if we could get them on board— this could become the start of something bigger! I sent my husband Alan to talk to Dan, the then owner, (I’m not much of a spokesperson;) Dan wasn’t against it but not 100% sure either, certainly under the time pressure he was being put under: Jules swipes by and gets things done in a couple of days max so no time to think things over. When it was down to cost keeping him from a yes- I offered to split it, knowing it would turn into a long lasting gift to our community. We have since financially supplemented other murals to make sure they would reach their full scope in potential and scale. The next few years involved spreading the word, putting together itineraries for Jules with new murals to be painted, some for which I designed proposals for those that needed to see what it would look like before committing. Each time lodging Jules & crew into our Airbnbs as a part of our investment to further grow the flower alley. I love watching it take “a life of its own” —inspiring many great things since… graduation, family, wedding or seasonal photo shoots, wedding rehearsal dinners, community gatherings and of course the notorious Revival by Jim Korn! All of this was possible through the amazing neighborly love, help and support found on this blessed alley. None of this would have been possible without Jules Muck! It takes a rare combined mixture of skills to create such movement: incredible TALENT, extreme FLEXIBILITY to work with a variety of people (some having no idea of what they want requiring her full input and creativity to people that have an exact vision to execute,) and SPEED: Creating an alley like this one needed MOMENTUM! Jules has all of it.

RDR is my favorite game series. More than Elder Scrolls, or even Animal Crossing. There’s just something deeply satisfying about spending time drenched in Rockstar’s equivalent of the old west. But it’s even more than that. It’s the characters. Arthur Morgan and John Marston are complicated men, trying to find their own version of balance in world whose mother tongue is brutality. I won’t spoil anything for those who might not have played the games, but there are scenes that have put me on the verge of tears. (And trust me, it’s hard to ride your horse straight with tears in your eyes.) The impact RDR made on my life made me want to do portraits of John, and Arthur for “Cowboys on TV!” Unfortunately, I dreamed too big and ran out of time. But when I found out that Rob Wiethoff (John), and Roger Clark (Arthur), were going to be at Indy Pop Con the dream reignited. I used my usual tools of the trade. Ink, sumi brushes, and a fine tipped Posca. The background is red acrylic I borrowed from Matt. Red normally dries streaky, but in this case I feel like it added atmosphere.
