WORRIED ABOUT OVERHEATING OR BUB GETTING COLD OVERNIGHT? Always a hot topic! I’ve had LOADS of questions about dressing bubs for sleep in this weather. Lots of concerns from parents about over heating and also how to know if bub is too cold. I briefly addressed this a few days ago in stories but wanted to give this a permanent spot, so bookmark this for ease of reference. How to tell if your little one is COLD. Common signs include: ▪️Crying in the cot but generally settles quickly and easily in arms (because you are warm) ▪️Asleep in arms but wakes within 10 or so minutes after being placed into the cot ▪️Sleeping with bum up in the air. ▪️Arms tucked under their body when sleeping on their tummy. ▪️Early rising and/or regular wakes during the coldest part of the night eg: 3-5am ▪️Moves around the cot and unsettled while doing this. ▪️Usually found in the corner of their cot ▪️Sleeps soundly when moved into your bed How to tell if your little one is HOT. Common signs include: ▪️Wriggles out from under their blanket but without fuss and then sleeps well ▪️Wakes early and is sweating ▪️Sweating ▪️Red faced ▪️Heat rash evident on waking Remember, use only cotton, wool or bamboo sheeting and blankets. No synthetic materials. If your little one is rolling, only use a tog rated sleeping bag and remove all blankets from their sleeping environment as per the @rednoseaustralia safe sleeping guidelines

🥶 “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing” I’m not sure who said that, but as someone who feels the cold - a lot! - anything that helps keep me from feeling frozen is a bonus! 🥰There are lots of things to keep baby - and you - warm and cosy when out and about. Here we have pram hand warmers (soooooo snug and warm!) and fleece-lined babywearing covers (suitable over any carrier - front or back - plus they fit over buggies too!) 📸 Not the easiest of things to photograph so drop by to have a look! I feel like this should be a #funfactfriday post, but the biting wind today made me think about how much I love warm wool! Small British studies done in the 1970s and 1980s found that low weight or premature babies who slept or were nurses on lambs’ wool blankets gained weight faster than babies on cotton blankets. 🤩🐏 This reminds me of the studies on infant massage we’ve posted about before. Low cost, non-pharmaceutical ways to help harness physiological mechanisms for improved infant health are rarely studied in depth because there’s not any big company who will make money off of them. They don’t mean we should rule out medications when needed, but that it’s ok to research, explore, delight in the natural mechanisms designed to help our babies grow well. ❤️ . . . . (for sleeping) 𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 fleece retains heat very well so fleece pj's can lead to heat rashes or even overheating in an environment that's too warm. 😬 This is something to be aware of as overheating is a risk factor for SIDS. Worried about your babe being too cold? ❄ Know that we all sleep 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 in cooler temps, our bodies even need to cool down to fall asleep! Between 𝟭𝟳-𝟮𝟬°𝗰 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹. If the temperature of your baby's room does drop low during the winter months, that's when it would be fine to use synthetic fleece! You can always use this to guide you: if YOU would be too hot wearing them for pj's, your baby would likely be too hot too! If you're unsure about them being cold or too hot, put them in a sleep sack with a higher TOG and in long-sleeved pj's made from natural fabrics such as bamboo, cotton or merino wool. What's riskier: a baby that's too 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘥 or a babe that's too 𝘩𝘰𝘵 when they're sleeping? While neither are good, I'm much more concerned about babies 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 for two reasons... 1. 𝗜𝗻 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽. This means that when we're dressed appropriately and not too hot, it actually makes it easier for our babies (and us) to fall asleep quicker and to transition easily between sleep cycles within the night.  2. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗦 (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Remember to 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝘆'𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸 as babies have poor circulation to their extremities which could trick you thinking they're cooler than they are. For the average room that's between around 20-22°C  (68-72°F), long sleeved jammies and a 1.0 TOG sleep sack or swaddle in natural fibers is a great option. If the room is a bit on the cooler side, opting for some warmer jammies is a good idea. I always recommend using natural materials as 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 if your baby starts to run hot during the night.
