Max has had the honer of being asked by many friends, old and new, the take on something that holds so tender and close to our clients hearts. Working with the remains of someone is intensely emotional. Max being the Cancer ♋️ that he is, treats the glass and the ashes with such love and care. He wanted to be a nurse as a child and I can see his tenderness and love as he creates these vessels that will hold such significance. In 2015, I embarked on a creative endeavor that would leave an indelible mark on my artistic journey: crafting my very first porcelain Ashkeeper (as seen in this photo). As I sit back and reflect on that pivotal moment, I am filled with a mixture of nostalgia, pride, and gratitude for how far I’ve come since then. It all began with my heart’s yearning, to honor the memories of both my mother and my grandfather and a desire to explore the intricate world of death and ceramics. With eager hands and a heart brimming with anticipation, I delved into the process, immersing myself in the world of death and cremation, slip casting and painstakingly hand painting clay into a vessel of beauty and significance. Every step of the way was a learning experience. From selecting the porcelain clay to mastering the delicate techniques of molding and slip casting, I poured my passion and dedication into every detail. Each curve, each line, carried a piece of my soul, infusing the Ashkeeper with a sense of reverence and reverence for life’s fleeting beauty. As I held the finished creation within my arms, I was overcome with a profound sense of accomplishment. This Ashkeeper, this tangible manifestation of my creativity and craftsmanship, held within it the potential to commemorate a life, to honor a legacy, to console grieving hearts. It was more than just an object; it was a vessel of memories, a symbol of love and remembrance. In the years that followed, I have continued to hone my craft, experimenting with new clays, exploring different styles, and pushing the boundaries of my creativity. As a mother and a ceramic artist, finding balance between nurturing my children and pursuing my passion in my home studio has been both challenging and rewarding. Working from home offers flexibility, but it also demands careful time management and boundary setting. Every day is a delicate dance between tending to my children’s needs and dedicating focused time to my craft. Mornings often begin with breakfast and cuddles and school for my big girl, followed by a flurry of creating and social media tasks during the day. Once my littlest is occupied, I steal moments to immerse myself in clay, casting and hand painting Ashkeepers into beautiful and functional artworks. However, interruptions are inevitable; a spilled drink, another snack or a big cuddle can disrupt the flow of creativity at any moment. Flexibility becomes key in managing both roles effectively. I’ve learned to embrace the unpredictability of motherhood while maintaining a sense of discipline in my work. Setting realistic goals for each day helps me prioritize tasks. Communication with my family and clients is paramount. My children understand that mummy needs quiet time to work, and I’ve established boundaries to minimize distractions during designated studio hours. Embracing imperfection is another valuable lesson learned along the way. Motherhood and ceramics both teach me to embrace the beauty in the flawed and find joy in the process, rather than fixating solely on the end result. Ultimately, the juggling act of motherhood and working from home in my ceramic studio is a testament to resilience and adaptability.
