Prickly pear ~ our GA Native cacti! Usually we see this plant at Pigeon Hill so it was cool to find it growing on a low lying area of the mountain in a different type of habitat that isn't rocky terrain. This specimen was growing at the base of a Cedar Tree! Btw, no matter how much I try to refrain from touching this plant, I still do because I'm interested in how firm the green flesh is at different times of the year AND I always get the micro needles in finger! So even if you think you are avoiding the main spikes, there are more that will get you! Look closely at the the way this boulder and tree almost look like the are "kissing" ! We wondered how long they have been stuck together?! A very long time we guessed. We took time to read the geology signage and found out that this area used to be under water. Then when the tectonic plates moved and pushed the mountain up, these boulders were at the top but rolled down the mountain and landed here! If you haven't been to the top of our mountain, then you should know the top is covered in boulders. A lovely place to see and stand on top of looking out over the cities of Marietta and Kennesaw below. These huge boulders we visited today are at the bottom of the mountain just scattered around and amazing to hike through. Today was a super special day! This was our first day back hiking our KMTN since March 2020! Our program was limited by the state of GA's Governor for over a year so we could not go beyond of fence to our Mountain, our namesake and special land that we have grown to love and respect. We havnt struck this trail head pose in a long time but WE'RE BACK! And we did a little dancing on the trail and rainbow 🌈 ribbon dancing in the huge meadow! The weather was amazing and Fall is in the breeze. We soaked up every minute of play and every single step was something to discover. Being back at our Mountain is like visiting an old friend. Look closely in Nature and yih will find amazing things ~ whike searching for Poplar leaves to journal about, we found the best examples of WHY you should treat every single leaf as a home or food for wildlife ~ if you watch birds closely you will see that they glean insects from the underside of leaves. So we always check underneath leaves to make sure there are no eggs or anything living on the leaf before we use one for art, tea etc. And we never haphazardly strip a branch of leaves as that is not caring for the tree or the insects living on the leaves. 💚 so taking time to look often pays off because you find coil caterpillars like this one that looks sorta like bird poop. This is the Giant Swallowtail butterfly in its caterpillar stage! Look closely and you can see that it is preparing a web to attach itself to the leaf to begin its chrysalis stage 💚 This is the largest butterfly in North America and has chosen our Yellow Poplar as its host plant!
