Photograph by Sonam Zoksang, 1997.” It is difficult to understate the extent to which both private and organized religious practice in Tibet were suppressed from 1959 until the late 1980s. Though the extent of its revival in the last 30 years speaks of the extraordinary progress that has been made in reinvigorating traditional religious practices, the extent of control which the CCP exercises over all facets of religious life are telling of the grip the Party continues to hold over such a fundamental aspect of life in Tibet. Of the 6,000 or so monasteries of varying sizes existing in Tibet pre-1959, only eight survived the events of the Cultural Revolution, neverminding the outright termination of organized mass religion in 1959. Though some monasteries continued to exist in varying forms until the mid to late 1960s, primarily stewarded by elderly monks, all were shutdown and attacked during the Cultural Revolution for being symbols of old society. Actions such as forced denunciations, looting, and demolition of often centuries-old buildings meant not only the scattering of tens of thousands of monks and nuns, but also the permanent destruction of centuries of Tibetan history. The creeping liberalization of the 1980s, spearheaded by figures such as Deng Xiaoping and Hu Yaobang meant that, as part of its national strategy of opening up, religious practices were gradually permitted once again. Such news led to a frenzy of reconstruction as Tibetans of all backgrounds flocked together in rebuilding what they had lost in the decades since, much to the chagrin of the Party; most major monasteries have since been revitalized, and many minor ones have as well. In this trip, I learned a little about Tibetan Buddhism and how it has exerted a particularly strong influence on Tibetan culture since its introduction in the seventh century. Buddhist missionaries who came mainly from India, Nepal and China introduced arts and customs from India and China. Art, literature, and music all contain elements of the prevailing Buddhist beliefs, and Buddhism itself has adopted a unique form in Tibet, influenced by the Bön tradition and other local beliefs. I very much enjoyed my time in Tibet, learning about the history of the Tibetan people, their rich culture, traditions and their way of life. Day 5, Lhasa. 🏳️🌈 Sono arrivata a Lhasa dopo un viaggio in treno di oltre 20 ore e qualche sintomo di mal di montagna di troppo. Lhasa, a oltre 3600 metri di altitudine, mi ha catturato il cuore fin dal primo istante con il suo ordinato caos che la caratterizza. La zona centrale è rumorosa, viva, caotica, ma allo stesso tempo estremamente pulita ed elegante. La zona di Barkhor è la più affascinante: gli edifici mantengono il loro stile tipico, il tempio di Jokhang è maestoso e brulicante di vita e le strade sono piene di fedeli che, noncuranti dei pochissimi turisti che li osservano, proseguono con i loro riti e le loro prostrazioni. L’edificio che lascia senza fiato è senza dubbio il Potala, la residenza del Dalai Lama. Tibet has been under Chinese occupation for over 70 years. In January 2024, at the United Nations in Geneva, China’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) came under review to address the Communist Party’s repressive policies in Tibet. Tibetans called for China to be held accountable for massive attacks on Tibetan culture, Tibetan Buddhism, the Tibetan language and the Tibetan way of life. “This is the last photograph of His Holiness the Dalai Lama taken in free Tibet,” declared Heinrich Harrer. The year was 1951, and the communist Chinese army had already invaded eastern Tibet and was threatening to advance on Lhasa. Only 16 years old, the Dalai Lama had been installed as head of state two years earlier than the tradition because of the impending crisis.
