Mankowitz in MOJO I have been a fan and enthusiastic contributor to MOJO since its inception in 1993, when I was approached by managing editor Mark Ellen, who I had known since his time at Smash Hits about a decade previously. I loved the idea of a “serious” music magazine that would take photography seriously with heavily illustrated in-depth interviews and was eager to be part of the new venture in any way possible. Over the years I have contributed many photographs to the magazine and been commissioned to shoot amongst others, Oasis, Suede, The Verve and Randy Newman as well as several special editions devoted to The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Kate Bush. I am delighted that this month’s edition includes one of my portraits of The Yardbirds as well as several of my portraits of Kate Bush. I was delighted back in November of 1993 when Mojo magazine asked me to shoot a session with Suede who had made quite an impact in 1992 when they were dubbed "The Best New Band in Britain." They were very interesting visually, particularly Brett and Bernard both of whom had an innate sense of how to work to the camera, and I have always loved this particular shot. The Rolling Stones: Rare and Unseen Book Launch Join us to celebrate the launch of Gered Mankowitz’s new book The Rolling Stones: Rare and Unseen with an evening of discussion and a Q&A with the photographer at our Piccadilly gallery. The Q in the Q&A will be … Will Hodgkinson; a music journalist, author and presenter. Chief rock and pop critic for The Times newspaper, he has written for the Guardian and Independent and for Mojo and Vogue magazines. Described by MOJO as “Iconic [and] dazzling”, Rare and Unseen delves into hitherto unexplored corners of Gered’s archive, as the photographer shares rare and newly discovered images of his time with the Rolling Stones, alongside his most iconic shots. The book also features Gered’s first-hand stories, as well as a host of expert writers on the band and their music – The Rolling Stones Rare and Unseen is a fresh look at the greatest story in rock and roll. The event will run from 6:30-8:30pm on Thursday, May 16th at the Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly, SW1Y 4AR. NORMAN PARKINSON: ALWAYS IN STYLE This wonderful new fashion photography exhibition at the McCord Stewart Museum, Montreal is now open! Known for his innovative and unique body of work, Norman Parkinson developed his own distinctive style throughout his 56-year career, from pre-war 1930s Britain and the austerity fashions of World War Two, the Parisian New Look of the 1950s and Swinging London in the 1960s, to the glamour and glitz of the 1970s and 80s, working continuously until his death in 1990. This exhibition offers a generous retrospective of Parkinson’s influential career, featuring 80 photographs that reflect the transformation of women’s fashion and helped shape the way it was communicated to the public over several decades. Through changing times Norman Parkinson knew how to keep up by reinventing his style and staying abreast of emerging generations of young photographers and models. His photographs helped create the age of the supermodel and made him the photographer of choice for fashion designers, artists and writers, iconic Rock and Pop stars, Hollywood stars and British Royalty. Terence Pepper, who directed the photography department at the National Portrait Gallery in London, is the curator of the show in collaboration with Alex Anthony and Iconic Images which owns and exhibits the archives of Norman Parkinson. Legendary photographer @gered_mankowitz has taken some of the most iconic pictures in rock n’ roll history. From The Rolling Stones and Elton John to Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, Gered always seems to capture the artist in a unique and captivating way. For this piece of art, I started with one of Gered’s pictures of Jimi Hendrix. I colourized the image and duplicated it to create textures which added some extra depth. I also utilized digital brushes to make it pop off of the page. Nothing can compare to the raw emotion that the original picture conveys but I wanted to use colour to symbolize the incredibly vibrant personality and legendary history that Jimi Hendrix still prodrudes. This is not for sale as I do not own the licensing rights. They are owned by the great people at Iconic Images. If you’re a fan of rock n’ roll, rock n’ roll photography, or photography in general, I highly recommend you check out Gered’s website. He has some amazing artwork, prints, and books, including my favourite “Goin’ Home with The Rolling Stones ‘66”.
Today we welcomed Pippa Diggle to Iconic Images Gallery, Piccadilly. We were so excited to discover that she is the woman in this Norman Parkinson photograph, taken in 1960 in New York City for Go magazine. Pippa lived in New York for two years at the time of this photograph, and is accompanied by Robin Miller, who recalled, “Parks stopped his car, opened the trunk to make it look as if we had a break-down and then while his assistant fiddled about in the trunk like a mechanic, Parks slid under the hood so that he lay on the road with his camera on the tarmac. He then sent Pippa and me about two hundred yards down the road and told us to run towards in hand-in-hand ‘madly in love with each other and New York’ which we did time and time and time again. You should have seen the faces of the people driving along!
