Artist: Between the Buried and Me Album: Colors II Track(s): Fix the Error Release year: 2021 Dan. Fucking. Briggs. I've been exploring more of Dan's music outside of BTBAM (Nova Collective and Trioscapes) and both are so good yet completely different from BTBAM and it really makes me appreciate the musicianship and work Dan puts into his music playing. Coming to this track, hearing Dan's bass solo at the beginning makes me want even more of his bass playing in the context of what else he does. I can't tell what types of effects he's using but it is on par to match the keyboards playing alongside him from Tommy. This song, overall doesn't really let up much. Once it comes on, it never stops. One of the things I noticed is that vocally, there never seems to be any clean vocals from anyone. There is some sort of distortion/growl to each vocal and maybe (not maybe) it's intentional. Even after the drum solo/fill area where the guitars come out, the song transitions from a minor key to a major key. To me, that would have been a good transition for some clean vocals but we don't get that. Then soon enough we are back in minor. Musically/instrumentality, the song fits in with the lyrics. That major transition is there to provide a false hope because after that transition we get this: "If you see the rainbow, there is no tomorrow It's wrapped in plastic If you see the rainbow, there is no tomorrow Put your face inside it We're here to bring it down Collapse society We were born for this It's time to celebrate" It's a song about revolution. It's not going to look pretty... it's going to be messy. Artist: Between the Buried and Me Album: Colors Track(s): White Walls Release year: 2007 This track wastes no time getting into the music...using Viridian, the previous track as its intro, White Walls comes right out of the gate with heavy syncopated rhythms. The intro to this song feels like a war cadence of sorts...like the band and ourselves is marching to the end. The band, specifically, breaks into more melodic lines after the intro with the vocals shortly coming in to join. Throughout the song we revisit the war-like rhythms along with BTBAM classic transitional sections. While having this song on repeat, I noticed the melodic guitar lines adding some dissonant notes which makes for a cool yet unsettling feeling throughout those lines. I enjoy the harsh to mellow transitions the band does and the build up back into the more intense sections; like "hey, this is the last track but we're not done yet!" Some of the less heavy sections of this song has a more playful feeling to me... it's light, the rhythm feels almost like a skip or maybe even just ahead of the beat. One of my favorite things about BTBAM is that even though their music is pretty technical, it also doesn't feel like they take things too seriously.... they know how to have fun with their music. Before the 6 minute mark of this song, things quiet down. The vocals and guitar become more open and vulnerable for the listener. This section feels more loose and free flowing. I did enjoy the build up out of this section: the guitar gets into this rhythmic pattern... maybe a motif of the original rhythm but not quite the same. The section ends by getting back into the song's heaviness from the beginning. One thing White Walls does is that gives you this disorienting feeling; you know it's the last track of the song but it doesn't give you any sense that it will end or at least to me it doesn't feel like a track that should come at the end of a record until much later in the song. It settles but it also seems sudden despite it being a 14 minute song... like you want more or expect more... Artist: Between the Buried and Me Album: Colors Track(s): Sun of Nothing Release year: 2007 This song is pretty straightforward.... at the start, but let's be real, it's BTBAM.... Starting with a rapid drum fill and ending with a three-chord cadence from drums and guitars, this song starts with 10/10 energy and feels like a straightforward thrash metal, with Tommy growling and screaming. Right before the one minute mark, the band goes into a half-time tempo/beat and changes the feel to the song; we still get the growling and screaming but we get this slower feeling and feeling of transition. We keep this half/slow tempo and main vocals into the next section, but we begin adding melodic back vocals to the established energy. Just passed the 3 minute mark, we speed back up but to this seemingly out of control energy and suddenly into this unhinged part of a series "la's" with infant-like vocals. Around the 4 minute section of the song, we start hearing the guitars do some melodic lines and a possible key change. That infant like section seems to symbolize this rebirth out of chaos. We still have that tension of chaos throughout the song, but it feels hopeful. We get more melodic and cleaner vocals as well, and this calypso-like rhythm to the song. Artist: Between the Buried and Me Album: Colors Track(s): Informal Gluttony Release year: 2007 Man.... I really love this intro to this song. Informal Gluttony begins with this gong hit and drone chord that rings then fades. The slow but steady hits of the toms enter and shortly followed the bass guitar with I would say a short bass solo...but it's subtle. It's like a background solo meaning it doesn't take away from everything else. While I am not fully caught up in my music theory language I love the melody of the guitar when it comes in. It utilizes a seemingly middle eastern influenced scale. After the introduction, the band transitions into its heavier chord playing instead melodic riffs but keeping in that similar key and tone structure of the melody which can be heard in guitar fills between verses. One of my favorite aspects of this track is how the band changes tempo multiple times as well as rhythmic changes. Well, not just with this track but this is one of their tracks that magnifies that aspect very well. This band flows between rhythmic and melodic changes with ease. Artist: Between the Buried and Me Album: Colors Track(s): Foam Born (A) The Backtrack + (B) The Decades of Statues Release year: 2007 (Part 2) I love how the second and part "B" of this intro starts with the same lyrics as the first: "I will just keep waiting, you will just keep waiting." It's a direct transition from the calm we experienced from the first track to more aggressive vocals and instrumentals. We experience throughout the track an eclectic taste of how BTBAM can switch up on you rhythmically and musically. That musical change-up is so fascinating. Rhythmically near the beginning, the song had this gallop feeling and a feeling a "stop and go" after it's cadences. Musically out falls straight forward but the guitars almost go into this middle eastern inspired style melody. We hear quite a bit of tempo changes in this song. After going back into this thrash metal feeling, the band adds this jazz element style in the song. I'm always amazed how effortlessly this band makes it transitions...studio and live.
