It was a great honor to participate in this year's Donor Dash as an organ donor (literally!). Walked almost 10 hours straight, mostly without stopping! Just goes to show being a living organ donor doesn't limit us. I only have one kidney and can still walk hours/50,000+ steps a day! It has never held me back at all! I donated in January this year and am already completely healed. 😍 There were many of my fellow organ donors there in spirit, those who died so others could live, saying yes to organ donation knowing they would get nothing out of it and would not even be around to see the beautiful impact they have on others. And the true heroes, those grieving families who said YES to organ donation in their darkest hour so another family wouldn't have to grieve and so that someone they may never meet can live a full, healthy life. I felt a deep connection to all of them as we walked & ran all connected to each other through the beautiful gift of life. 💚💙 I encourage everyone in the U.S. to sign up to be a potential (deceased) organ donor: https://www.organdonor.gov/sign-up https://www.donors1.org/learn-about-organ-donation/sign-up-to-save-lives/ And possibly a living donor. Kidneys are in extreme demand in the U.S. 90,000+ people are waiting for a new kidney. Approximately 13 a day die while waiting. Living organ donation does have potential risks to the donor and is not for everyone. But it's generally a very safe procedure and brings a lifelong sense of fulfillment to the donor. You don't have to know any sick people. Today was a special day. As some of you may recall, I donated my kidney in November to a stranger, who wound up being a transplant nurse in Arizona named Rachel. Someone else had already donated their kidney last June to another stranger in order to give Rachel a voucher for a kidney because they didn’t match (Rachel was a friend of their friend), then Rachel got matched to mine in November. Rachel’s voucher donor is Jesse- who lives here in southeastern Wisconsin too, so we met in person today at the @creamcity5k 💙💚🟠 It’s a small world after all! 😄 @nationalkidneydonationorg has more info if you want to learn what these vouchers I speak of are all about. Yesterday was our 2 year kidneyversary... 2 years since I donated my spare kidney to a stranger so that this guy, my very best friend Gav, could receive a kidney from a stranger on the same day. Sharing another amazing donation story for #nationalpediatrictransplantweek 💚 featuring Kathleen Charles. “My husband asked me to watch a story on the news in May 2020. He is a high school special education teacher and thus featured a student at his school that he didn’t work with, but knew of. The story was asking for help in finding her a kidney and I offered. What tugged at my heart was her beautiful smile, but mainly her mother’s pain. I have 3 boys and knew I would be devastated hoping to find someone to help my boys if they needed it. As mothers, as humans, we should do what we can to help each other out. I turned out to be an ideal match. Our blood was very compatible and I’m small, so my small kidney was a great size for her, as the surgeon later told me. I donated 3/5/21 at UC Health and she had her surgery at the same time across the street at children’s hospital Colorado. It was cool imagining my kidney being taken across the street to her! Our families met in June of that year and have become friends. They are truly lovely people and I truly connect with her mom. This has been a truly amazing trip and race weekend for so many reasons. And more photos will come later with all the amazing memories that were made (including some epic race photos) but one amazing moment I'm going to share now. While at Disney (and more specifically on a boat to Disney Springs) I got word that I had been approved to be a living kidney donor for someone who I love and care for. It seemed especially special since April is National Organ Donation Month. I have my surgery scheduled for May 7th and will be up north for the surgery as well as for my recovery. I will probably be pretty quiet on socials for May as I prep for surgery and recover. I want to take a moment to thank my family and close friends for being so incredibly supportive of me as I have been going through this process and continue to be so supportive of me leading up to the surgery and will be for recovery as well. I also want to take another moment as well to encourage everyone to be an organ donor. You don't have to be a living donor (like me) but it's easy to do when you go for your license to mark yourself as an organ donor. "The wound is the place where the Light enters you." 💚🫘 My beautiful, perfect scar in all its raw perfection & magnificent glory. In January this year I was laying on an operating table out cold & cut completely open to give life to someone else and already my body is so healed. The scar is delicate and perfect. So powerful in all its subtlety & elegance. My beautiful life affirming scar. Isn’t it amazing that a whole life was saved & enhanced because of this small, thin, & delicate line on my abdomen? Awe inspiring. Something so small and seemingly insignificant, just a thin line that no one else may ever see and will eventually fade to almost nothing and be nearly invisible, yet it’s a symbol of one of the most significant things there is to do: giving life. It takes my breath away. I remember waking up in the operating room groggy and amazed. There was no pain. (Other than a migraine-like headache) I instantly remembered what I did. It was hours later, but it felt like mere seconds ago that I was there on that table going under while the doctors & nurses laughed & joked and played what I vaguely remember being “Oh, Pretty Woman,” by Roy Orbison, for me as I was drifting off. My body felt strong, healthy, & alive, even with all the grogginess, exhaustion, and headache, and one less organ. I couldn’t believe it finally happened after all these years of dreaming. It felt so easy. All I had to do was lay on a table and go to sleep for a couple hours so someone else can live. For me, it was that simple. It was an extremely easy decision to make. It was my calling. There was never any hesitation, uncertainty, or question about it. I heard the call and answered. It doesn't matter that I may never get a thank you or see the impact of my act of compassion. The potential is what matters, potential to save and enhance, touch another life. And there is joy & value in the act of giving, itself, without getting any results or gratitude for the act. Just the act alone is enough. There are so so so many people in need of a new kidney, and I want others to have the health that I have. If I have more than enough of something, I want to share. Organ donation is a beautiful, life affirming process that shows just how valuable one life is. Usually there has to be a tragedy for someone to be an organ donor, I'm lucky enough to get to give a piece of myself away while I'm alive to potentially enhance or save a life, and I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. Many years ago, I read a true story about a man who donated his kidney to an anonymous stranger because he believed that everyone was just as worthy of health & life as his own son. It deeply resonated with me and inspired me to do the same a couple decades after reading it. That's someone's mom or dad or parent or brother or sister or sibling or Grandma or Grandpa or best friend or neighbor or husband or wife, someone's daughter or son. And most importantly it's someone who wants to live, someone with a favorite movie and favorite song and favorite color and favorite food, someone who wants to taste a new ice cream flavor or see another concert or walk their dog without getting fatigued, someone who wants to live to see another sunrise or sunset. Underneath we're all the same. Whoever has the kidney that was mine is the same as me. I don't have to know them to know. All I have to do is think of myself and know that person has goals and interests, hopes and dreams, the ability to feel pain and suffering and love and fear and happiness. And that's enough for me. I may never get a thank you or see the profound and positive impact the organ that was mine has on the person or family. She changed. But not overnight like in the books. Over years. Slowly and painfully. Sometimes brutally but she did it. I am living proof that we can overcome the days we feel like we’re not going to make it. I know the feeling of being sick & not knowing if I’d see tomorrow. I know pain and the things I could’ve done to end it. Thanks to a great support team for pulling me through the darkest days. I know how exhausting it is to fight & carry a sword 24/7. I’m living proof that there is a light in the darkness. But one day I put my sword down & picked up my crown. The crown I hold is not just a crown it’s a symbol of healing, survival, hope, strength, transformation, dreams and a symbol of possibilities. I’m living proof that miracles exist & we can persevere. Whoever needs to hear this— Keep going even on the hardest days. As long as you keeping push forward you will only go forward even if it’s the smallest step let it move you. You will make it even on the days that feel impossible. Keep going through. I know the fear of not knowing where that “through” leads but there is a power inside of you that you will discover & one day you’ll feel the pain was all a dream. You’ll wake up with excitement in your core. I’m living proof you will not be who used to be, your circle will change & some people may not recognize you and I don’t mean physically I mean your soul. You’re growing, your healing, & you’re going to go places you never even imagined. It’s ok to not know, trust the plan. It may take months, years or even a decade.
