Friend Tim Mullen donated his kidney last week so a 33 year old wife and mother of 2 young children could get off of dialysis and potentially saving her life. In his words: #Shareyourspare. 500,000 Americans are on dialysis. Dialysis has been in use for 65 years and is equivalent to 5%-10% of a healthy kidney. Only 45% of dialysis patients survive for 5 years and 13 die each day. 100,000 are healthy enough to undergo a kidney transplant and return to a normal lifestyle. Unfortunately only 25,000 kidneys are donated each year and most come from deceased donors. The waiting list for a kidney is about 5-6 years so most will no longer be healthy enough (or alive) when a kidney becomes available. There are efforts underway to develop an artificial kidney or finding a way to use animal kidneys in humans. However no clinical trials have started and the likelihood of a successful alternative could still be 10-20 years from now. What can you do: 1. Sign your organ donation on your drivers license or state ID. Currently only 60% of eligible people are registered! 2. Take care of yourself! Maintain a healthy diet, exercise and make regular checkups. 37 million Americans suffer from kidney dhosease and the numbers are growing! 3. If you know someone in dialysis encourage them to get approved and registered with NKR. Using a national database across 105 hospitals, NKR has a wider pool of kidneys and uses state of the art markers leading to quicker recovery, fewer medications and longer kidney life for the recipient. 4. Write your legislators to request better utilization of deceased organs. Nearly 20% go unused due to mishandling, poor transport and/or an unwillingness by hospitals to use certain organs. 5. If you are blessed with good health and if you know someone in need of a kidney, get tested to see if your qualify. With NKR’s voucher program you don’t need to be a match! We only need 1 kidney to live a long, healthy, active lifestyle. Your remaining kidney will also adjust and grow 50% larger on its own. Living donor kidneys typically last much longer for recipients. Seven years ago I met erin for the first time at the gift of life donor dash. I was just turned down after 6 months of trying to become this once strangers living kidney donor. Who knew, just 5 months later, we’d be on the operating table at @jeffersonhealth with a second chance, exactly where God knew we needed to be, as I gave her my kidney. Today we both ran the same donor dash together. I am so proud of erin & our kidney, and the beautiful life it has given her today. Let me be living proof, that you have two kidneys, but you only need one. Before becoming a donor, I was always searching for my purpose in life. Felt like something was missing and I was made to be more. Now, about 6 & 1/2 years with my solo kidney, my life is so full of purpose & truly beautiful. Two kidney bre was running 13+ minute miles! PLEASE SHARE ❤️ Last year I posted this plea and despite many friends and a few kind strangers coming forward, sadly they were incompatible. Niall's situation has now become absolutely desperate and we are asking/pleading, for anyone to step forward if they are considering becoming a kidney donor, or to share this post, as it might reach somebody who is able to donate. I know that there is somebody out there who can give back Niall his life and a future. I just need friends and family to share this post far and wide, in the hope it lands on their feed. ❤️ We would, of course, compensate you for loss of earnings during your recovery time and any expenses for appointments etc. The number to call to be tested is 01142715983, this is the Sheffield Transplant Team, we aren't able to call on your behalf Niall is on 10 hours dialysis every night, which is only going to increase. He needs 3 x weekly iron injections, which are self administered, takes 16 pills daily and has a monthly iron infusion. This is just to stay alive. But the side effects also mean he is at risk of a stroke or heart attack. It's a double edged sword. Chances of a transplant from a deceased donor are less than 11% in year 1, this without even knowing it could be a match. Niall is in year 2 and the clock is ticking. The reality is that he will die waiting. Please help. I am asking anyone who would like to help to please share this message with all their friends and family and any platform that you may have a presence. Today was a special day. As some of you may recall, I donated my kidney in November to a stranger, who wound up being a transplant nurse in Arizona named Rachel. Someone else had already donated their kidney last June to another stranger in order to give Rachel a voucher for a kidney because they didn’t match (Rachel was a friend of their friend), then Rachel got matched to mine in November. Rachel’s voucher donor is Jesse- who lives here in southeastern Wisconsin too, so we met in person today at the @creamcity5k 💙💚🟠 It’s a small world after all! 😄 @nationalkidneydonationorg has more info if you want to learn what these vouchers I speak of are all about. The number of Hispanic organ donors in the U.S. has increased in recent years, but that growth has been slow. Although organs are not matched by race and ethnicity, a significant gap remains between donors and transplant candidates among Hispanic people. About 15% of organ donors in 2023 were Hispanic, federal data shows. That's about a percentage point higher than 10 years earlier. However, as of mid-April, nearly 23% of the more than 103,000 transplant candidates on the waiting list in the U.S. are Hispanic. In fact, 59% of transplant candidates are Black, Hispanic or Asian people. Transplants between people of different races and ethnicities are frequently performed successfully, said Dr. Ravi Dhingra, medical director of the advanced heart failure and transplant program at Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. My last vegan brunch for April- a simple nurtional yeast and garlic fococcia bread topped with olives, sun dried tomatoes, roasted red bell pepper and parsley. I love the simplicity of letting yeast magically rise. It creates an airy yet crispy bread. I accompanied it with some pistachio nuts, fresh blueberries and unsweetened dried cranberries. My approach is that brunch doesn’t need to be super complicated- it’s about enjoy delicious food and relaxing. Update: CaeLee's Nephrology appointment went SO WELL. They are so impressed by how responsible CaeLee is in taking her medicine, approximately 17 pills a day depending on the day of week. CaeLee is conscious of her diet and makes a real effort to be good- she does enjoy her cheat days 😁 as she totally should!! CaeLee is stable, kidney function is almost identical to last month. Tomorrow, 4/24, will be 11 years. In this time, I have gotten married, had 2 beautiful/perfect children, have had no health issues, a career I wanted, and generally enjoyed life! ✨ This afternoon I had an appointment with my doctor👨🏼⚕️at Citrus Orthopaedic & Joint Institute to get a steroid shot 💉 in my right shoulder for the pain from my Osteonecrosis. This year, my goal was to read more. I had gotten away from my love of reading and I missed it. Spending lots of time in waiting rooms while Shawn undergoes testing and treatment gives me ample opportunity to stop scrolling on social media and start reading again. So I started a year long bible plan (on track at day 112, yeah me) and I also wanted to only read non fiction. Last week as I needed a new book to start, I grabbed this one, I really adore @savannahguthrie and let me tell you, THIS BOOK speaks so much to me in my current season. Social media gives us a false perception of how others struggle, it makes us feel like our imperfect lives are somehow different than everyone else, because we only see everyone else’s highlight reels. I’m here to tell you, no one has a perfect life, everyone is in a battle, and God is our only hope. Having a spouse with a chronic illness is lonely and hard, it can be isolating. We are at a point with grown children where we should be spending more time doing things just us, instead our calendar is filled with appointments and doctors and sick days. Through this all though I’m learning to slow down and see what God is trying to teach me, every day I see a small piece of his perfect puzzle. I’m not certain what this all looks like on the other side but He does. Sooooo, long story short, this book is so worth a read, so much what I needed to find through this time, I’d encourage you to find it and give it some of your time. #kidneydisease #weneedadonor #shareyourspare

Me, Metabolic Acidosis and #peritonealdialysis - A (slightly funny) Cautionary Tale. Folks with #chronickidneydisease, or #ckd, often dance with the metabolic acidosis devil. Acidosis is pretty much what it sounds like - you have too much acid in your blood - and because your kidneys suck, you get fun symptoms like difficulties with breathing, rapid heartbeat, extreme fatigue and confusion... pretty much doubling on all the symptoms of kidney disease. What was I talking about...? Oh, acidosis. Yep. Okay - here’s the good news, acidosis is easily treatable (for most) with NaHCO3 aka sodium hydrogencarbonate... you guessed it, Clever Clogs - good old baking soda! Your nephrologist will likely recommend/prescribe you a dosage based on your bloodwork and you’ll take these super effective and super cheap tablets. Mischief managed! However - here’s the slightly funny part of the story: if you take ALL of your bicarbonate tablets at once... let’s say your doc has you on a dose of six tabs per day… and you take them with a mighty slug of kombucha (diluted glorified vinegar) and THEN fill your abdominal cavity with almost two litres of fluid... you will blow up like a big balloon, so big you might float away, forever. Think Aunt Marge in Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban... or that 3rd grade experiment you did for Science Fair with a coke bottle, a tablespoon of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of vinegar and a balloon left over from your little sister’s birthday party. #kidneygram - I have paid the dumb tax and lived to tell the tale. SOPPY POST ALERT: I have two close friends whose kidneys tried to kill them but thanks to organ donation they are still a part of my life today! I love them both to bits & would be lost without them. 😊❤️ Thats what organ donation does. It saves lives. Did you know that not everyone who passes away can be an organ donor? The conditions are very specific & this is why it’s vital that we share our wishes with our loved ones, that in the event of our unexpected death, our organs might be suitable for donation. For the conditions to be correct , the patient has to be in hospital & on a ventilator ie. the body still needs to be functioning, albeit artificially. It is usually as a result of a brain injury or cardiac death. The chances are slim. If you haven’t already, have the conversation with your family, especially if you have kids. They are never too young to be educated on the miracle of organ donation & it’s knowledge they will carry with them for life. Emmett just had a Nephrology clinic appointment this past week which showed his kidney is rock solid but his blood sugars are trending up ⬆️ If his sugars are higher yet in 2 months he will be referred to the Endocrinology team. We’ve already been there a few times prior so we are familiar with them, unfortunately. It just means he’ll be trending towards diabetes. We are hoping and praying that isn’t the case 💚♻️💚 He’s also been picked up by Neurosurgery at SickKids for assessment as he’s having some adverse side effects, making us wonder if his spinal cord has retethered. This is a birth defect that has been dealt with in the past at McMaster but there’s potential for it to have retethered. He just had an MRI so once the doctor reviews in June, we will know more. There may be other therapies they can do to help the issues and avoid life-changing surgeries but we aren’t too sure yet. We’ve been accumulating some of the best specialists SickKids has to offer and in a few weeks there will be a round table with 3 different teams to meet and discuss next steps. Pray for wisdom and direction for the teams as they make decisions, and also for us as parents as we advocate and talk things through. Emmett’s is older and more aware of what’s going on so it also brings big emotions. On top of all this, he’s had quite a few viral things happening but thankfully we’ve been able to get to the appointments and procedures between all of them! We’ve been processing and praying as we find new discoveries and trusting God with all the unknowns and timing… there is no other option! #teamemmett #shareyourspare

I have Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a progressive disease that has caused my kidneys to lose their function. I inherited PKD from my father, who was in his sixties when PKD placed him on dialysis and eventually took his life. Several years ago, my doctor told me that it was time to start my journey towards finding a donor for a kidney transplant. Kidney disease is a difficult condition that affects several bodily systems, and one’s overall quality of life. Now, as I am near the point of renal failure, there is a particular urgency in my quest to find a living kidney donor. My doctor says a living donor is needed because it is best and because the deceased donor kidney transplant waiting list is extremely long. Getting a kidney transplant will prolong my life and restore my energy. There are many goals I want to pursue before my time is through. CLC MEMBER FEATURE: My name is Adriana Zenon, I am 27 years old from Palmdale, California. I graduated at CSUB with my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2020. On January 5, 2023, is when my whole life took a turn. I was rushed to the ER for having a severe headache and stiff neck for a few days, almost to the point where I couldn’t get out of bed without being in pain. Over the two weeks I was in the hospital I was fighting for my life while having several tests and biopsies done, Doctors and nurses trying to figure out what was wrong with me. There was a lot of uncertainty, so they started treating me for meningitis and valley fever. I started on steroids and other medicines that came with many side effects. Along with my test results, my kidney function was low, and the Doctors wanted to keep me for a couple more days to see if my kidneys would improve on their own. Unfortunately, my kidney function was the same, and was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, along with vasculitis and Glomerulonephritis. I was told my kidneys were unlikely to recover and needed to start dialysis asap, as well as a kidney transplant. I was in complete denial about my diagnosis, and it didn’t feel real until I left the hospital and had to figure out what my next steps are. For months I struggled figuring out how to live with my diagnosis and trying to feel confident that everything was going to be okay. It’s been a big challenge I’ve had to face mentally and physically, and probably the hardest. My kidney disease has been life changing and scary, but I’m continuing to live my life and not letting it stop me from doing anything I want to do. It’s been a big adjustment to my life and taken a lot of time to figure things out. I am extremely grateful to be surrounded by people who have supported me through this journey and for being so patient on my good and bad days. A year of my diagnosis has been such an amazing learning experience, and I want to continue to shed the light on kidney disease. Life is so unexpected and should never be taken for granted.
