Série architecture et couleur. Lors de mon voyage à Bruxelles en fin d’année dernière, j’ai eu la chance de voir cette maison moderniste, située à Uccle. Cette maison est emblématique du travail de l’architecte belge Louis Tenaerts, relativement méconnu hors frontières belges, et qui a pourtant réalisé plus d’un millier de bâtiments très intéressants dans la région bruxelloise, entre style art déco, style moderniste et style paquebot. Celle-ci découverte grâce à ma copine belge Daphné d’@odidido qui l’avait photographiée lors d’un de ses séjours réguliers avait particulièrement retenu mon attention. Elle se situe dans un espace relativement exigu, mais reprend bien je trouve tout le vocabulaire architectural de Louis Tenaerts,, en un contraste noir et blanc très percutant, très graphique, avec ses lignes et ses arrondis. Cette maison construite en 1933 pour Valentin Marit, dessinateur, comporte également une magnifique verrière sur deux étages, propice à faire pénétrer la lumière dans un large espace ouvert, très avant-gardiste pour l’époque. Restoring an old house can be fascinating and sometimes, puzzling. Between the research and the care taken to respect what’s there, one has to make choices always balancing preservation with the fact that these houses are still lived in. During the restoration of the steel window, the ironworker discovered that the parts of the coloured glass hidden from light and air were, in fact, white (without being painted). À cela je rajoute une rénovation des châssis hasardeuse et à moindre frais. On y retrouve néanmoins des éléments caractéristiques de l'architecte avec ces rondeurs articulées autour d'un mât central, séparant les deux travées principales. Throwback to the restoration of the front and rear facades. The double height window had been restored the year before, which made the rest of the facade look quite sad. I had found a few pictures taken by Willy Kessels in the 1930’s, which showed a polychromy a far cry from the all white look prevailing in the 1980’s to 2010’s. During last year’s restoration of the fireplace we discovered multiple layers of colours ranging from different shades of white to ochre yellow. In some places, the plaster wasn’t bonding with the brick wall and needed to be restored. Open plan in 1933 ! Louis Tenaerts has shown a very innovative approach when he conceived this house’s plan. Instead of the traditional 2 or 3 “pièces en enfilade”, he designed an open plan, in the best modernist tradition. The kitchen opens onto the living-room and the staircase is part of it. The result is a very modern feeling house, with very few doors and no corridors. Very innovative.
