TADAO ANDO 🇯🇵 Was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1941. A self-educated architect with roots in Osaka, he spent time in nearby Kyoto and Nara, studying first-hand the great monuments of traditional Japanese architecture. Between 1962 and 1969 he traveled to the United States, Europe, and Africa, learning about Western architecture, history, and techniques. His studies of both traditional Japanese and modern architecture had a profound influence on his work and resulted in a unique blend of these rich traditions. In 1969, Ando established Tadao Ando Architect and Associates in Osaka. He is an honorary fellow in the architecture academies of six countries; he has been a visiting professor at Yale, Columbia, and Harvard Universities; and in 1997, he became Professor of Architecture at Tokyo University. Ando has received numerous architecture awards, including the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995, the 2002 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, and the Kyoto Prize for lifetime achievement in the arts and philosophy. SRJC STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT Athena choreographed LET THEM EAT 80s for the Spring Dance Concert May 10, 11 and 12 Athena Oseguera is 21 years old and has been dancing since she was 3 years old. She started with ballet and went on to learn the styles of jazz, hip hop, modern, contemporary and a few others that have grown her immense love for dance. Athena dances in the dance company at the SRJC as well as dancing at the Movement Lab and is very involved in the dance community. She is also a dance teacher at Art & Soul School of Creative and Performing Arts and loves getting to teach and share her passion for dance with young children. Athena is very excited to perform her heart out onstage and to share her work. She is so happy she gets to dance with many amazing dancers and is grateful to have the utmost support from her teachers/directors, friends and family. It's a great catalogue of early modernist house design. Yorke was a founder of architectural practice Yorke Rosenberg Mardell, latterly known as YRM until it was absorbed into giant RMJM. Konkursni rad arhitekta Milana Zlokovića za Beogradsko sajmište (saradnici: R. Ilić, N. Lalić, D. Ivačković i I. Кurtović), druga nagrada, 1937. Dugo vremena se pokretalo pitanje izgradnje sajmišta koje bi odgovaralo Beogradu kao prestonici Jugoslavije i glavnom privrednom i administrativnom centru države. Iako je još 1923. godine osnovano posebno udruženje s ciljem unapređenja svih grana privrede, u čemu je organizovanje sajmova trebalo da ima primarni značaj, tek je tokom prve polovine tridesetih godina došlo do konkretnijih aktivnosti na realizaciji ove ideje. Tada je iz brojnih praktičnih razloga predložen teren na levoj obali Save, površine od oko 30 hektara, u blizini mosta Kralja Aleksandra I, prvenstveno zbog blizine reke i centra grada, kao i mogućnosti za njegovo prostorno proširenje. Arhitektonski konkurs za izgradnju Beogradskog sajmišta Društvo za priređivanja sajma u Beogradu je raspisalo u februaru 1936. godine. Međutim, kako ishod konkursa nije zadovoljio zahteve beogradske opštine, izrada plana sajma i paviljona je poverena opštinskim arhitektima. U odnosu na realizovano rešenje, prema kome je prostor sajmišta tretiran u formi male gradske strukture s glavnim centralnim reperom u središtu (trgu) i sistemom ulica oko kojih su grupisani paviljoni, Zloković je imao sasvim drugačiju zamisao sajmišta kao jedne kompleksnije trgovačko-privredne celine u kojoj se ne bi izdvajali pojedinačni paviljoni reprezentativnog izraza, već bi to bio organski sistem sajamskog kompleksa koji bi mogao etapno da se razvija i prilagođava potrebama vremena i prilika. Zloković je iskoristio blizinu reke kako bi formirao dokove sa skladišnim terminalnima i izložbenim hangarima po ugledu na industrijske komplekse. This beam helps transmit The Egg’s weight onto the supporting pedestal and gives the structure an ageless durability that belies its nickname. The Egg houses two theatres – the Lewis A. Swyer Theatre and the Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre. Seating 450, the Swyer Theatre is used for chamber music concerts, cabaret, lectures, multimedia presentations, solo performers and a majority of educational programming. With a seating capacity of 982, the Hart Theatre is used for larger productions including musical theatre, dance and music concerts. SRJC STUDENT ARTIST SPOTLIGHT—ALYSON OAKLEY Choreographer Spring dance concert May 10-12 Alyson has been dancing for over ten years and has been a competitive dancer since she was nine. She has trained in tap, jazz, ballet, contemporary, and hip hop. Alyson has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the dance program as well as being part of the touring dance company this past fall. This is her final semester at the JC and will be transferring to UC Irvine this fall where she will pursue a degree in education. Alyson currently teaches ballet and tap at the Dance Center. She has grown to love teaching and choreographing and she is very excited to share her third and final piece in the SRJC Spring Dance Concert.
