“Burns With a Blue Flame” 30”x30”, oil on canvas. My cousin passed away in January. He was an amazing man who was a personal hero and cheerleader in my life. His name was Bluford Benjamin- and many called him Blue. His wife and two children are equally as loving and caring as Blue was.. like they carry on his legacy. In March I got to spend some time with his family and I was so reminded of Blue’s heart.. so I painted this piece to represent his wife and two children and how the three of them “burn with a blue flame” and really honor the spirit of their late husband/father. And an awesome side note (of just how serendipitous life is) a woman drove up to Tulsa from Dallas for a commission painting of her grandmother this past weekend. I showed her this painting and she was so touched by the story, that she asked if she could deliver it to my cousin back in Dallas! “Goal” oil and 24k goldleaf on 30”x40” canvas. Inspired by the fact that I want to believe that humanity, compassion and civility will prevail in these turbulent times. Maybe I watched too many Disney movies as a kid… but it’s 2024- we have to learn from the past and grow. I found the image of the thorn tree in a 1940’s French book of Surreal Renaissance Art during my residency in Spain last Fall. It was my first day there and I was the first to arrive at the estate and was alone for 5 hours until the other artists arrived. I scoured the library for inspiration and found this wonderful book- so I read on a balcony, with a cup of tea channeling that this may have very well been the way that Picasso started his day in the studio. “6:30” , 20”x36” oil on antique 1880 French Dowry Linen with Embroidered Initials (look on the black area of the TV and sideways are the initials “MD”) inspired by the amazing dog and his point of view on “Lessons In Chemistry” on Apple. I painted this oil painting to convey 6:30’s (the dog’s name) obedience but how he enjoyed TV, like all of us of certain generations. The palate is a subdued 50’s, and also the embroidered initials nod to the thought that TV was our Dr. as well as babysitter. I really love this piece and its atmosphere of nostalgia and peace. The Valparaiso Residency for artists was founded by Paul and Beatrice Beckett in 1989. He was a Danish artist from a wealthy family- she was an occupational therapist. They married in 1955- traveled to Spain and fell in love with the area between Granada and the sea. They bought an old olive press orchard by their house and restored it in 1974. Paul passed in 1994 and Beatrice still lives next to the residency (that includes a giant orchard of citrus and olives) as well as a mountain that has ruins at the top of Moorish rulers. We had dinner with 94 year old Beatrice who is spry, sharp and witty. Very grateful for my time here. Trying to be positive.. just was informed at the check in desk for my flight that since I used miles to purchase my tickets 6 months ago- they couldn’t help me due to the fact that I have to change AIRPORTS in London in a 4 hour window timeframe. That includes customs, grabbing a transfer car ($$$) to private shuttle me from Heathrow to Gatwick- go back thru security and recheck my bags.. no other options available and no other flights whatsoever for the next month that I can switch to. So.. this adventure begins a little rocky.. but I have faith that I will be just fine- oh.. and now the flight out of tulsa is delayed by 1.5 hours. So we will see what happens!! Today’s sketch ✍️: “Thank a Teacher” I am shocked at the micromanaging that teachers are going thru today. I have taught for over 25 years- I learned so so much from all my teachers over the years- and I am still friends with several of them today. They taught me wonder, art, how the real world worked, how to drive on ice, abstract thought.. so much! I am SO grateful for the wonderful teachers I had throughout my academic years.. I was blessed to have every single one of them.
