Writing „The order of time“ is for me a combination of my research and practice of Indian rhythms and symphonic music based on the current research on quantum physics, nuclear chemistry and math with prime numbers / numerical sequences. Not in a serial sense but an emotional and sensual sense, approaching the science from a musical perspective - using the diverse instrumentation and personal experience from Persian and Arabic frame drum music, string instruments (Kamanche and Santoor, the latter technically more of percussion string instrument) and Caucasian wind instruments (Duduk, Zurna, Ney). One soloist on frame drums - who is representing one atom of uranium 238 being destabilised and deviating from a stable state into a chaotic state and causing a chain reaction of events releasing energy - the percussionist is interacting with other atoms and pushing the decomposing of matter in different directions. The time of these processes is influenced by circumstances around it, masses, energy, random events - time does not flow as a constant everywhere but is relative to its environment. It flows slower with less gravity (on a mountain for example) and when in movement, hence it’s relative to the gravitation fields and place where it is. Newtons time was a nice idea but it’s not completely correct. There is still many mysteries unsolved but we have to keep researching to find out truths. Science and math can be a great source of inspiration for arts and music, we already know of the impact of math and physics in music. But how can it sound in 21st century? With a large orchestra, a gravitational force itself, literally and with sensitive instruments which are hundreds of years old - Tonbak, Darbuka, Santoor, Kamanche - some older than any European instruments? The chain reactionof Uranium 238 (146 Neutrons + 92 Protons/Electrons) is used for nuclear power - it cannot be used for nuclear bombs - unlike Uranium 235. We're honoured to be presenting the debut of the newly-formed gamelan trio Clover Ensemble at our shows on April 26th and 27th! We've worked extensively with ensemble member Jonny Smith on past Din shows, and are very excited to introduce other members of the ensemble to our audiences. More info: 🍀 Clover Ensemble is a quartet of professional, Toronto-based percussionists who study, compose for, and perform on Balinese gender wayang. Consisting of four bronze metallophones, gender wayang is a form of chamber gamelan that simultaneously represents a performance practice of tight-knit ensemble playing and collective improvisation, constantly recomposing new and traditional repertoire through inter-subjective negotiation. Comprising members Yang Chen, Christopher Hull, Jonny Smith, and Naoko Tsujita, Clover seeks to engage this oral tradition through a combination of dedicated study of traditional repertoire and collaborative creation of new music through improvisation, composition, and reorchestration. 💥 As a newly formed ensemble, Clover is still in the process of self-definition. Debuting this April as a featured ensemble in the “Museum of Quiet Sounds” presented by Din of Shadows, the group will establish its commitment to championing new repertoire for these beautiful instruments. Nevertheless, recognizing their position as informed outsiders to a rich tradition, the quartet eagerly seeks out opportunities to learn from Balinese teachers. Under the advisement of I Dewa Made Suparta, renowned Balinese musician and director of the University of Waterloo’s Balinese gamelan ensemble, Clover plans to expand its instrumentation to include a full complement of wayang batel instruments, including drums, cymbals, and a gong, owned by Clover’s founding director, Christopher Hull.
