Trees of Delhi The grand Old Peelu /Meswak /The toothbrush tree/ Salvadora persica. This quintessential desert tree, a standalone specimen with gnarly trunk and grand canopy, is not just a show stopper but home to many birds. This time it was fruiting and the last of the jewel like Ruby coloured berries were hanging here n there. A pair of crows was in deep conversation about a possible nesting sight or perhaps they were just at home in the hollow of the trunk. This magnificent tree is the oldest in Sunder Nursery though there are three more there. Peelu are Delhi's true natural heritage. The trees at Mehrauli, Lal Kot, Delhi golf course and Nizamuddin have stood there for more than a century. This one at Sunder Nursery, as per a gardener, is about 700yr old. Maybe someone should give it a heritage tag like the one in Qutub Complex. These old trees are thriving habitats for many bird & butterfly species and extremely important to ecology because they resist the climate warming and act like a shield against storms & other natural calamities. Peelu is among the 22 native species of trees that are on the verge of disappearing from the Capital’s landscape. These old trees are like sanctuaries and need to be cherished & protected. It wasn't unfortunately planted as Avenue tree because the Britishers believed it was unfit. Terminalia chebula commonly known Black Myrobalan, Harad in Hindi and Haritiki in Sanskrit. It belongs to rangoon creeper family. I haven't seen any other Harad trees in Delhi apart from this one. I think there used to be one in Gurgaon sector 35. This is the first time I am seeing it during the fruiting stage. The fruit is a drope with five longitudinal ridges with a single angled stone. They were still green but eventually would turn yellow to orange brown. It's dried before using it for medicinal purposes. The raw fruit is used for murraba, pickle etc. Harad is one of three ingredient in the ayurvedic formula ‘Triphala. Considered as the king of medicine in Ayurveda. In the villages of Western Himalayas the fruits of harad are used to prepare liquor along with jaggery. The leaves are used as fodder. The flowers are dull- white and scented but they smell really bad. I'll try to capture them next time hopefully. Sunder Nursery is a treasure trove when it comes to seeing rare flora especially the indigenous flora of Delhi. A friend posted photographs of Gondini drupes being sold in Old Delhi and the name struck a chord. A quick search showed its presence in SN so i decided to find it. I'll tell you more on How i find the hidden trees later. Gundi is part of lasoda family but it isn't pickled though throughout summer it's eaten as a fruit. Like all our local indigenous fruits it's become a rarity and you only see it in Old Delhi for a very short period. There are a few trees in N. Ridge, Nicholson cemetery, aravali biodiversity park and one in SN. Most of the sweet tasting drupes with clear gelatinous pulp are still semi ripe or raw on this one. The birds are having a feast as usual. It's got an unusual crooked trunk. The inner bark is used for making ropes. Various parts of the bushy tree are used in traditional medicine. Childhood in my palm. The winged seeds of chilbil /papdi / kanju or Indian Elm / jungle cork. During the summer storms these precious paper thin coin like pods would dance in the wind and fly down. We would run to collect them. They were used in art projects, kept in bowl or sometimes even stringed. The seed carnals are edible but I refrained from tasting them. On the other hand my friends would eat them with joy. I was looking for a certain tree and the gardener kept talking about the good points of Chilbil. Pointing to the tree he insisted i take a pic of this native tree of Delhi. It looked pretty but i was distracted, thirsty & hungry. His dabba making me envious too so i obliged and in turn he asked if I would like some food. I was touched but refused. It's one of the popular ornamental trees because of its orchid like flowers. The tree is considered medicinal and its buds and flowers are used in many Indian recipes.
