I stopped at one of those informational signs near a trailhead on the Alaska Highway and learned about stone sheep. I thought about hiking a few miles on the trail for a chance at spotting some but noticed a couple with a dog pretty far up the trail already. I figured the dog might scare away the sheep so I decided not to go for a hike and got back in the van to continue driving. Five minutes down the road, a small herd of them were just chilling on the road. I wrote a post awhile back about a kingfisher who had what I call 'human eyes'. I think this Glossy Ibis is a great example of another bird who I think resembles my description. 'Human eyes' aren't specific to any species, I think of it more as by the individual. There are certain eyes you can look into and feel the generations of knowledge they hold. They love to study us as much as we do with them. They are the watchers of nature, the leaders who set examples for the rest. When birds are still in the egg they create a special bit on their beaks called an egg tooth. The egg tooth's only purpose is to break the eggshell during hatching and is cast off shortly after the bird emerges from the egg. If you look closely, you can see this young one's egg tooth - it's the small white piece near the end of the beak. Unser Eichhörnchen im Futterhaus Es war ein sonniger Frühlingsmorgen, als ich durch das Fenster sah und das freche Eichhörnchen entdeckte, das sich genüsslich im Futterhaus der Vögel zu schaffen machte. Mit seinen geschickten kleinen Pfoten griff es nach den Nüssen, die eigentlich für unsere gefiederten Freunde gedacht waren. Mit einem verschmitzten Glanz in den lebhaften Augen schien es fast, als würde das Eichhörnchen lächeln, während es eine Nuss nach der anderen knackte. Es war ein Anblick, der mich unweigerlich schmunzeln ließ. Da wurde mir klar: Es war höchste Zeit, das spezielle Futterhaus für unser pelziges Freundchen wieder aufzufüllen. Also schlüpfte ich in meine Schuhe und trat hinaus in den warmen Morgen, das frische Grün der Bäume leuchtete im Sonnenlicht und die Luft war erfüllt vom Duft blühender Blumen. Im Schuppen fand ich die Tüte mit den Walnüssen und Haselnüssen, die ich extra für solche Gelegenheiten bereithielt. Zurück am Futterhaus befestigte ich die speziellen Knabbereien im kleinen Eichhörnchenhäuschen nebenan, das ich in der Hoffnung aufgebaut hatte, unserem kleinen Nussdieb einen eigenen Speiseplatz zu bieten. Kaum hatte ich die letzten Nüsse platziert, huschte das Eichhörnchen, angelockt vom Geräusch der frischen Füllung, neugierig herüber. Mit einem flinken Sprung und einem eleganten Schwanzwedeln war es im neuen Futterhaus. Zufrieden beobachtete ich, wie es sich an den Nüssen zu schaffen machte, diesmal an einem Ort, der ganz und gar ihm gehörte. Es war ein einfaches Vergnügen, dieses kleine Wesen zu beobachten, und es erinnerte mich daran, wie sehr solche kleinen Gesten der Fürsorge das Herz erwärmen können.
