Today's garden jobs were varried I started with turning over the soil where we will move th raspberry too, there's currently a stump in there rotting down so will have to plant around that Then I cleaned up the garden shed because we'll it was a tip 😂😂😂 I don't know how it happens but all of the sudden everything is everywhere 😅 Then it was explor the garden time which included finding radishes, squashing caterpillars, planting celery and pak choy and just enjoying the view those brassicas have taken off, we have broccoli and red and white cabbage in there all from @kingsseedsnz I also popped into our local Mitre 10 today and picked up some comfrey and borage, I've planted to comfrey in a pot and will eventually put it in a big pot once I empty put the kumara and the borage is in the broad bean and mustard bed The aim with these two is to make my own weed tea after hearing the term on @yourgardencoach.nz I thought why not just start experimenting and give it a go 😊 Now time to hit the books #gardendiary #yourgardencoach_nz #kingsseedsnz #mitre10 #brassica #broadbean #borage #comfrey #nzgardener #gardennz #mygarden #foodforest

Unlike a lot of other edible flowers that mostly taste like salad with a hint of perfume (just being real about it lol) borage is the superior variety for texture and flavor. A little retrospection. 🧐 What you can see here was a large fireplace (last pic) where we burned the timber leftovers from spruces that dried up during the summer drought of 2018. Afterwards, I made it a plot, first with herbs and vegetables, then with shrubs. While ashes are said to be harmful (heavy metal, calcium) it all healthily grew right from the start. The potassium was largely removed of course. The topinambur I cannot recommend, for it will grow beyond reason when you leave it alone... 😅 I had to level the plot with rollboarders for watering etc. Now it's all covered with mulch. Not as die-hard ecologists would do, yet practical and to the purpose. And sth. to gaze at, for the lower level is decorative only. Hoary Puccoon (Lithospermum canescens) of the Boraginaceae. A regionally rare native spring wildflower related to American gromwell. This species is a rare occurrence, as much of the habitat it requires (open woods/no woody growth) has been destroyed or developed. It does not handle disturbance well and is apparently hard to propagate from seed. The horticulture industry has attempted to cultivate this species, but apparently it rarely sets viable seeds or if they do sprout they quickly die off. Some speculate it may need a certain mycorrhizal fungus symbiosis to succeed like most orchids. This showy native flowers throughout April and doesn’t reach more than a foot tall. It is mainly bee and butterfly pollinated, and is rarely grazed by herbivores as it has many poisonous alkaloids. The name comes from the Powhatan tribe, who used the roots to make a red dye Anyone have experience propagating this species?
