Tommy Caldwell The Charlie Daniels Band dedicated their 1980 album “Full Moon” to honor Tommy’s legacy, Marshall Tucker Band’s bass player. Charlie was a friend and mentor to a lot of musicians, like Ronnie Van Zant. Thomas Michael Caldwell was born November 9, 1949 to Toy Talmadge Caldwell and his wife, Virginia “Jenny” (Vaughn) Caldwell. Tommy inherited his grandfather’s middle name (Toy Thomas Caldwell) as his own. Grand-daddy Caldwell was born in 1899 but died March 24, 1932, when Tommy’s father was just 10 years old. Two Caldwell grandson’s (Toy and Tommy) honored him in name. We could tell you that Tommy hit a 1965 Ford Galaxy on April 22, 1980, head trauma sustained caused his death on April 28, 1980, that the only song he sang lead on was “Melody Ann”, that his grave marker reads he was the husband of Melody Ann Hope –but no one has corroborated him being married but possibly engaged. All things most have read a 1000 times anyway. Flipping through YouTube videos 2 years ago, a black and white video popped up of these guys singing “Can’t You See.” I thought, “wow, I remember hearing that as young kid”, but wouldn’t have been able to tell you 1 thing about the band, or anyone in it. Curiously, we began researching their story, and it spoke volumes. From the Caldwell boys being Marines, to Vietnam service. The more we discovered, the story grew in intensity. Although 4/28/80 marks Tommy’s tragic death, his mother’s grief should be noted, as she and her family had just lost their youngest son Tim, on 3/28/80, just 30 days prior to Tommy’s death. Today marks 42 years. Recently, we discovered the Caldwell boys to be 10th cousins, once removed, through their mother Virginia. Fate? Who knows, but their story, music, lives, those left behind, we hope to honor and keep them happily alive in the hearts of those who knew and loved them most.
