Hat: Brown vintage fedora by Knox. In 2011, I purchased my first-ever vintage hat… a gorgeous dark brown fedora by Knox of New York, pics 1 and 4. I loved it dearly for its fabulous quality, although the sweatband and liner were the worse for wear. The beaver fur felt was fantastic, lightweight and totally waterproof. After five years of frequent wear, in 2016 I resolved to restore it with a new roan leather sweatband and silk liner, pic 2. It was slightly too big for me so I eventually, in June 2021, passed it over to an old friend in Australia, who still has it. So this left me with a vintage Knox-shaped space, which I have just managed to fill, pics 3, 5 and 6!

Presenting Seyid Islam Khodja (1872 - 1913), nominated by @theandrewhumphrey Andrew says, “I’m in Uzbekistan and my head was turned by this guy Islam Khodja in a museum exhibit.” One glance of Mr Khodja’s photograph and I can completely see why. He looks so masterful and magnificent in his fine garments. I bet he had an award-winning body under those silken robes. An hirsute adventure playground of man muscle. Khodja was the Grand Vizier(a high-ranking political advisor or minister in the Near East, similar to Prime Minister) of the Khiva Khanate from 1898 until his death in 1913. Born in 1872 in Khiva City in Xorazm Region, western Uzbekistan. Along with his native Khorezm dialect of the Uzbek language, he was fluent in Persian, as well as being proficient in Turkmen. He began his political career as governor of Hazorasp. In 1898, at the age of 26, he was appointed Grand Vizier of the Khiva Khanate, becoming the second statesman in the Khanate, and one of the youngest Grand Viziers in the history of the Khiva Khanate. A few of Khodja’s public speeches have been recorded, in which he spoke out against some customs and Sharia punishments for criminals and those who were disliked by people in power. On the 9th of August, 1913, Isfandiyar Khan invited Islam Khodja to his palace and released him in the evening after the night prayer. On the way to his suburban palace, located near the cemetery of Oglan Adiz-bobo, several people attacked Islam Khodja, leaving him with multiple fatal knife wounds. He was 41 years old. So this one is special. I met the shop proprietor (pictured with me), who took over from his 94-year-old grandfather five years ago. His grandfather started the Brussels shop in 1948 after the war. The shop has original fixtures and smells like mothballs (to keep critters from consuming the felt). I procured a Barbisio, a one-time competitor of Borsalino. It was the last in the shop since the company went bankrupt 5 years ago. He only had it because I have such a gigantic noggin (as one Austin hatmaker put it, an “outlier.” All the other normal sizes were long gone. Note: the hat is in a box in the bag, not on my head. Hat: Colonial style Panama aka the Optimo. I used to dislike the colonial Panama style, associating it with the history of over privileged entitlement enjoyed by some of our ancestors. Then, one day I rewatched Casablanca(1942) and made the wonderful discovery of Sydney Greenstreet, who played Signior Ferrari, urbane owner of the Blue Parrot. His opening scene, when he first walks into Rick’s Café Américain, forever changed my opinion of this most traditional Panama hat style. I had to have one. Now, in 2024, it’s one of our most magnificent stock Panamas. And, as always, there’s only one place in South-East Asia to find hats like this.
