Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson, what a book - a rich sci-fi world, a complex society, fantastical cultures, compelling characters, and very real themes. The storyteller passages which comment on the main narrative add a mythic weight to the story and even more substance to the world. The tale and its telling has a saga-like quality, though most of the primary plot takes place over just nine months. Our protagonist goes through so much, and we are introduced to so much context to contend with that it’s hard to believe how much Tan-Tan grows, but it is really a crucible and unflinchingly dark. I really loved the language, especially the dialogue. I love variations of English and the different senses of expression possible within them. One of a million things that happened over the last two months - I had the pleasure of meeting the ever vivacious and vibrant @ceciliasal6 as she organized, coordinated and hosted (as a Pierrot Grenade) the Carnival Show this year for St. Monica's Prep, where she is a Theatre Arts educator. In this whirlwind of a carnival season, meetings fly by faster than even I can try to rattle them off. It was with great pleasure that I was able to make my second appearance on a Calypso Monarch Finals stage, this time to help former Young King and Independent Senator @helonfrancis in his bid to become a second time Calypso Monarch. I'm no calypso expert, but he sounded good from where I was standing. 🎶 I was subsequently able to have a little conversation with the man after his performance I've been listening to him a long time and have always been a bit curious about the personality. He really on a different kind of wavelength and is somebody who not afraid to own it. I appreciate his authenticity and hope that his foray into politics does nothing to tamper with that, which is basically the point of the song for anyone who didn't hear it. After all, all the young man has done is answer a call to Public Service for his country. His is a fine example to follow. Couldn't find a better way of starting the year and the Carnival season by crossing words with my long time traditional mas icon, teacher, playwright and natural treasure Mr. Felix Edinborough, "D Spellbinding King, Pierrot Grenade Extraordinaire. 🤡 It was in 1993 that I first saw this illustrious gentleman perform a character after my own 9 year old heart - I always thought that if I had to play a carnival character it would be a Pierrot Grenade, much to my father's chagrin. The identity was literally in the name after all! Interestingly enough, Mr. Edinborough told me that at that age he was fascinated by the Midnight Robber😎 Go figure... In 2003, my father sent me the calendar in which they both featured as I made my transatlantic sojourn. In 2013 I had a brief conversation with him that was supposed to lay the groundwork for this discussion - which should have happened at the end of 2023, but had to be unavoidably postponed. I always knew him as a colleague and friend of my father's and as a stalwart of the inimitable Talk Tent. However, this sit-down conversation about himself, his art, traditional mas and carnival, away from the hustle and bustle and noise of the road and the competitions, has been about 20 years in the making.😮 I told him at the start that It was a pleasure to be in his illustrious company - and unwittingly gave him ammunition to unleash his lyrical barrage as only the Pierrot Grenade can do - by relating a typically humourous and colourful narrative pertaining to the effects of a supernatural assault on pastoral agriculture. 🐴🐴🐴 He has inspired and continues to inspire many, myself included - and in so doing, provides a template for the continuation and regeneration of our rich cultural traditions.🙏 I take all my hats off to you most worthy of warriors of the word 🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩 . . #pierrotgrenade #midnightrobber #traditionalmas #trinidadcarnival #legacy #dspellbindingking #intergenerationalculturaltransmission #notdyingjustdivided #speechmas #masterofkilleroratory #talkyuhtalk #robberspeech #talktent
