This debut legal thriller by Caroline Cleveland is everything I love in a southern legal drama and then some. It has mystery, heart, and even humor at times. I can’t believe I haven’t seen more people talking about it. The majority of the book is written in third person with a few chapters sprinkled here and there written from the perspective of the murderer. There is a small cast, but Cleveland did a great job constructing the killer’s perspective to give the audience enough information to have a few suspects, but not enough to make it an obvious choice. I had one person in mind for most of the book, only to realize I was wrong. It’s evident that Cleveland has a strong background in law by the way the cases were written and the players involved disclosed information. It was all very well done with few, if any, plot holes. It’s rare for me to find a thriller that has many likable characters. I truly fell in love with almost all of them. Without spoiling anything, I can say my favorite was Addie because I always love reading about a strong, intelligent female lead. She really made the book, in my opinion. This one would be good to read or to listen as an audiobook. I listened to the audiobook and struggled a bit with the narrator sounding robotic in the beginning. He did eventually even out or I just got used to him. That made me take a bit longer to finish the book, and I wondered who was talking when and where. And this story was too good.. to end like that. I wish if that was different.. 🆁🅴🆅🅸🅴🆆 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I love a good small-town series. This one has some really interesting characters, a cool town history, and all the ‘we have each other's backs’ vibes you could want. Casey has found himself in Home, Vermont training to be a Michelin level chef before the end of summer so he can take over where is father left off when he died. Except he’s terrible at it and has a complicated relationship with his father. What isn’t complicated is the draw he feels for Dev, the town manager and owner of the house Casey is living in. Dev carries the legacy of Home’s founder on his shoulders. The town has some unique laws meant to support its people but given the economy of small towns, it’s a struggle. As Dev helps Casey find his passion, Casey helps Dev realize that being responsible doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. A heartwarming community-oriented story, with two very likable characters, and a cat that may have possibly stolen every scene they were in. Narrator Greg Boudreaux did a fantastic job at capturing the likeability, quirkiness, humour, and drama of this story and its characters. ✨Book Review Alert✨ My friends have been suggesting I read this for years and I’m so glad that I was able to grab a copy of this through the library because what a fun read. I enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more of them. As someone that reads a bunch, I’m always looking for new concepts on a genre that make the story unique. I felt this book had it. A Murderbot who just wants to watch soap operas and is socially awkward around humans? Sign me up. It was an easy read that had a lot of dry humor and made me want to pick up the next book right away. These are smaller books at 4 hours of audiobook and it was the perfect amount. As the series progresses, I can’t wait to see how Murderbot (yes, that’s his name), develops. Because the book is so short, you don’t get an expansive background on the world, but I didn’t see that has a hindrance. If you really like world building and NEED to know everything about a science fiction or fantasy world, you might have a bit of trouble with this. Overall, I found this to be a great read for those that love science fiction, unique stories, action, and fun concepts. I’ll definitely keep reading the series. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

guys i’m going to be so vulnerable and honest… i judged a book based on its cover 😬 the seven moons of Maali Almeida is much more than just a pretty face. this 2022 booker prize winner written by a Sri Lanka native: Shehan Karunatilaka, is based upon a 1990 civil war. in it our main character Maali was a war photographer and has unexpectedly died. He now has 7 moons to not only find who killed him but to also communicate with his loved ones in order to get his photos released in an attempt to help overthrow a corrupt power system. the book is gripping and filled with all sorts or morally grey characters that gives it that realistic feel despite the fantasy elements. the only reason i did not rate this higher is because it does had a large cast of characters that can get confusing to navigate at times. it is also written in second person, but luckily for everyone reading we only get one POV. overall rating: 3/5 favorite quote: “Evil is not what we should fear. Creatures with power acting in their own interest: that is what should make us shudder.”

Had the best weekend now that the sun is finally out, so I have to do a #weeklyreport Reading: I’m juggling a ton right now because I came face to face with my first (very short) reading slump of 2024. I started A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman and for some reason, I wasn’t super excited to pick it up, so I added in a digital copy of Cat Shook’s If We’re Being Honest and yesterday I started Where I Was From by Joan Didion Eating: My mom and sister just returned from Japan and brought back lots of Japanese candy, so I feasted all weekend Playing: wordle, mini-crossword, connections, spelling bee, and letter boxed today and every day. You know how it is. Obsessing: went to an Angel City game on Friday and now I might be a big women’s soccer fan? Recommending: I watched all of Baby Reindeer in the span of three days. It was so good yet such a tough watch that I’ve recommended to everyone I know who hasn’t yet started it. Be mindful of its TW though Treating: my car to an oil change! Girls can do hard things
Just Finished | Did It Hurt? by H.D. Carlton 📖 She did it. @not.enough.bookshelves_ found a dark romance I actually enjoyed! I couldn't put this down. I was so into it! I did the audiobook as well and it was so worth it 😍 I loved the fact there was actually a lot going on in the plot which I have done lacking in a lot of the dark romances I've tried before. I found the characters really intriguing and I got so into the craziness at the lighthouse 🦈 I only have a teensy complaint and it's such a hilariousy tedious thing and it's a me problem, "Enzo" is a name I can't stand. I used to work in childcare, I looked after a kid who was an absolute nightmare, full spawn of satan and I really disliked the way the female narrator called it out. But yeah, if I could rename him, then this would be a perfect royal flush. 😂 Really glad I read this and a big thankyou to Amy for gifting me the book 💋 I'm giving this a 4.5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ 💬 If you were writing a biography what would you call it or who would play you in a film about your life? After reading and enjoying Gina Chung’s short story collection Green Frog, I was looking forward to reading something novel-length, and I really enjoyed Sea Change even more so. What of course is interesting is this book coming out right around the same time as Shelby Van Pelt’s Remarkably Bright Creatures. I’d never seen a giant Pacific octopus features as a main component of a book before, and here we have two (great!) books highlighting the relationship between a woman and this animal. In this book, we meet Ro, a young woman who appears at a crossroads in her life. Her long-term boyfriend has left her after being selected for an expedition to establish a colony on Mars. She works at an underfunded aquarium at a local mall and has a close working relationship with Dolores, an octopus who was brought to the aquarium after being caught in the wild on an expedition by Ro’s father. Dolores serves as a continued connect between Ro and her father, who disappeared on an expedition and is presumed dead. Ro finds herself distanced from her close childhood friend who is fixated on her upcoming wedding while Ro reels from her breakup, and strained relationship with her mother. She knows she needs to do something else with her life, but appears stuck. She is falling into an extremely unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Chung writes a woman still reeling from grief and the unknown. I really enjoyed this one!
