Last night was a big night for us! After slightly over a year of working on refitting Bella we put the finishing touches on the last project at 10:15pm. As of today we are back to the business of running surveys. We are by no means finished with all the projects on the boat. As we crossed projects off our list we would inevitably add two or three more things to the list, oh boats.. Looking back at the past year, @deep_blue_dani and I (@fredranda11 ) feel a huge sense of accomplishment! We have done fiberglass, woodworking, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, hydraulic, and mechanical work, not bad for two dive boat captains and scuba instructors from the Keys. Doing all this while living on the boat as well has been a challenge and none of the projects are as simple as they originally seem. For instance, this door threshold needed a compound curve on the bottom because the door isn't level and we also needed water to run off of it. In addition it had to be tight enough to not let water in but not too tight to keep the door from opening. The simple act of making a door threshold has now turned into 2-3 days of measuring, planning, cutting, routing, and sanding. We have a huge backlog of photos/videos of the projects from the past year. We will be posting these in the coming weeks during the downtime during surveys!!! I always find it interesting that I never feel fully in control of the creative process when I write. 🤔 (Nevermind me I’m feeling reflective…) 😂 I get an idea, run with it and then hope for the best! 😂 Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s terrible and sometimes I just don’t know what to think 😂 but I never fully know which way the wind will blow! This was particularly true of ‘Elegy’. I wrote it before ‘Since You’ but for some reason it didn’t feel right to release it yet. It was like the feeling was off, it wasn’t really chiming with me but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. So instead I opted to release ‘Since You’ which felt more apt at that point. Cut to getting the EP together (it wasn’t in the pipeline until after ‘Since You’) and finally ‘Elegy’ made sense to me! I didn’t realise it then but it was a finale song! A song that was a kind of summary of a tumultuous period but too a fitting end to it. It more or less of says, ‘okay that was a rollercoaster, but time to move on and embrace change!’. I’ve spoke at great lengths about leaving my former band and going solo etc but I think ‘Elegy’ kind of marks and end to that period. We rebuilt the helm from our tuna tower!! Our hynautic h42 helm was in desperate need of some attention. So off we went on disassembly adventures!! Along the way we were greeted with blown shaft seals, watery/milky oil, finicky springs, slippery ball bearings, gunk reminisce of pond scum, and our road map was an old xerox copy of a parts diagram from the 1980s. We ended up with greasy hands (normal day for us), had quite a few laughs, and best of all we now have a helm that doesn't leak oil or let water in and is super smooth!!!! We still have our fly bridge helm to rebuild, but it should go much faster with some of the tricks that we figured out.
