Peyton in her Big Sister Era.❤️ Loss and infertility are never JUST a momma's journey. I learned this hard (and beautiful) lesson while walking through my own recurrent losses. Somehow, our oldest, Mack, always knew I was pregnant before we shared with anyone. It's like she just intuitively knew. Levi, was the one to kiss my belly every night before bed and during each pregnancy he would ask, "Is baby okay?" Evie prayed every day during our season of loss and during Judah's pregnancy, that she would get to be a big sister. Sibling photos are always special. But there's something that brings me to tears when I finish edits for the big siblings that spent years watching Momma grieve and while praying nightly for a new best friend to join the family. I wish our big kids didn't have to experience the heartache that comes with waiting for a baby. It feels unfair that a piece of that innocence gets tainted. But my goodness, are these photos so much sweeter when we finally get to see them in their big sibling glory. 🙌❤️

This is the hard part they don’t tell you about. There isn’t a time when you can “clock out” of being a mom. When you’re sick, your babies still need you. When life throws you a curveball, your babies still need you. When you feel like you’re burning the candle at both ends of the stick and things won’t let up, your babies still need you. When I was a kid, I just thought my mom didn’t get sick and didn’t have hard problems. Obviously, what I know now is that good parents keep on going and continue to show up and be there for their kids despite everything else they have pulling at them in life. But I hope our generation has learned that it’s OK to seek help and a break when we need it before we feel burnt out. Whether reaching out to a family member or a dear friend to help out even for a short time while we take a little break to care for ourselves, that is good and should be normal. Because caring for yourself is also caring for your children. Our kids need a happy and healthy mom/parent and that requires intentionally scheduling little breaks for ourselves when possible to take care of us. If you’re struggling, this is for you. 💗 Know that you aren’t alone. Many of us feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and spread too thin. But remember that this is a season in life that won’t last forever and that you are so much stronger than you will ever know. You grew, birthed, and are raising these beautiful babies. We’ve been in this phase. I say phase but really, it’s been awhile. This is the “phase” where she wakes up in the middle of the night crying “I want mom-myyy!” because of a bad dream. The other night, by the time I went in (all of less than a minute), she had actually fallen back asleep. For a split second, I thought about going back to my bed.. But of course, I climbed into her bed anyway, because it was easier than having to wake up and do this cycle again in case she cried out another time. I admit I have some PTSD from postpartum insomnia during PPD. I’m simultaneously obsessed and scared of sleep for myself all the time. And it’s been almost 5 years. I need a sleep mask and noise cancelling earbuds or ear plugs to go to bed each night still. So whenever she calls for me, I bring those things along… and I hope I’ll fall back asleep in her bed. These are the phases I never heard about before I was a mom, the struggles with my own sleep and mental health that I never expected. Some days I wonder when they might end. And other days I will them not to slip away so quickly, as I roll over to snuggle my daughter and caress her baby hair. I know it’s okay to feel tired, and I know I will also miss her needing me. So much dualities. In the morning, I will ask her what she dreamt about. And she will almost always tell me she couldn’t even remember. What does she remember then? She says she remembers mommy (or daddy) came in and stayed with her until she fell asleep again. She remembers feeling safe. And that, to me, makes this dance that we do seem more like a privilege than a phase.
