When women are unable to breastfeed or choose not to, they inevitably find themselves at the centre of judgment and stigma, experiencing guilt and shame when breastfeeding doesn’t occur. Summer Friedmann, a lactation consultant, frames these feelings as grief, not guilt, noting that “guilt is what we feel when we have done something wrong—almost sabotaging ourselves... Grief is what we feel when something is important to us, and it doesn’t go the way we desired.” Sound familiar? Often, the harshest critic during motherhood is the moms themselves, which can expand into greater feelings of low self-worth, decreased self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and anger — the list goes on ad infinitum. You wouldn’t know from these photos that I cried today. You wouldn’t know it took me over two hours to put some laundry away because of all the extra steps. You wouldn’t know from these photos that it’s the only time I felt like I could take a breath today. Maybe painting with a 2 year old isn’t your idea of relaxing, but I love crafts and I love doing things that make me feel like I’m being a good mom. Mental breaks don’t always come in the form of bubble baths or a GNO. Sometimes, we are not able to take part in those luxuries. But- there are moments in our everyday life that we can find joy in, we can take a brain break even if it’s only for 15 minutes. Ask yourself- what do I find joy in?
