A Lil’ Mélange of My Favorites From GoF West, 2023. I had to pick an MGA, of course. The TC, previously belonging to @moss_motors founder Al Moss, was also in my top picks. The car has over 100,000 miles on it, but still looks immaculate- purrs, silently. Has an incredible bronze and creme paint scheme, and gives everyone who owns a classic British sports car the subliminal confidence to undertake restoration, repair, sheer ownership even. If it weren’t for this car, and that man, 90% of the MGAs, MGBs, TFs, TDs, TCs, E types, Minis, TR3s, TR2s, TR4s, Tigers, 100-6s, 3000s, Spitfires, TR6s, Midgets and XJ6s would not exist today, they’d all be dead. We owe our ability to own, take care of, repair, these cars to parts manufacturers like Moss. And that clean TC, represents our immense confidence in that ability. Would you want to undertake restoration of a car knowing you’d have to wittle the parts from single blocks of metal or make a wiring loom by stealing your neighbor’s copper drain pipe, feeding it into an extruder and weaving it into what you needed? I installed the MAJOR upgrade rear main seal kit from @moss_motors . It went great! 👍🏼 Seriously though, I judged the seal installation to absolute perfection, and it is an incredibly tricky job to do. I installed a speedi sleeve (first time) to give the modern lip seal a nice surface to ride on, and sliced my thumb right open at the end when trying to remove the installation portion of the sleeve. This is a super cool helpful upgrade to have over the original scroll seal, which only “works” when the car is running, and when you’re parked uphill in San Francisco, leaks all the oil out the back of the engine 😁👍🏼 this lip seal won’t let that happen. Master Cylinder Rebuild. I saved my master cylinder with a rebuild kit from @moss_motors . I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we in the car community are very lucky to have these parts available. We don’t even just have brand new entire master cylinders available, we have access to the component parts to repair and reassemble what we have (if it’s salvageable). This is a huge benefit, particularly for people restoring cars on a budget, to have access to the wear parts (rubber, copper washers, wheel cylinder components) without replacing the entire component. Accuracy. Recently achieved a milestone with the MG TC restoration in getting the gearbox back into the car after a refresh, solo man-handling it in. Was very surprised at how well the mounts lined up and this is 100% due to @moss_motors committing to providing quality parts for these cars which are approaching 100 years old. People in the car community, we are so lucky. So lucky to have access to stuff like this, we have no idea. What would you do if you took your gearbox out and realized the 80 year old rubber mounts were made of moldy cheese and there was nowhere to buy any? That’s right, you’d have to sail to the Congo and whittle mounts by hand, from a single piece of a rubber tree. After taking delivery of the MGA to be restored yesterday we decided to make the most of yesterday’s freezing sunny weather and grit free roads ! We nipped to two clients to drop off some work and made the most of the winter sunshine. I only purchased this car on the 15th December so it was her 2nd trip out. Merry Christmas From MG. Had the car off the road for several weeks now after doing a heater restoration and reverting some things to original, which is REALLY nice. Period correct is always the best. Fixed an exhaust leak and the car is much quieter in the cockpit now, which is also kind of nice. It’s changed the entire character of the car, sort of smoothly resonates and (don’t want to use this word, but) drones up through the rev range- E type-esque but without the great twin cam crackle, of course. Glad all the electrical connections are intact after I took them all off to paint the heater shelf, AND put them away tidily, P-clips and all. Super pleased with how the car is looking these days. Check out the new ID tags and riveted heater plates from @moss_motors . Looking super great and they tie the whole thing together. And We’re Back. It would not have been possible without @moss_motors. I spoke to a man yesterday, who had an MGA in college on the E. Coast and he simply said “Moss is a lifeline”- and he’s right. Beautiful fitment of the front and rear bumpers, light lenses, all the parts are true to form. The classic gold parts (brakes, grill, wing mirrors, rear view mirror, and more!) look fantastic, and have the weight of quality parts that make such a difference when restoring and using these cars. Bedlam dreams of rain while I’m off to the cooler clime of Portland, Oregon. New stuff day in the garage!! 1) I got my @thebugeyeguy Iris Blue rattle cans - now to hit the spray-out cards and check the color match but I think it’ll be awesome for the engine bay and floor touch ups. 2) Also got my new @officialelementfire fire extinguisher! That is NOT a road flare but a much smaller and more effective fire puter-outer! I kinda want to try it out, it’s so cool and doesn’t take up any space in the Sprite cockpit. On the left what’s been rattling around in my car compared to what’s going in! 3) And then the last few days Terry Horler, author of the Original Sprite and Midget Restorer’s book and I have been chatting over email, which is really damn cool and also a little weird at the same time. Handmade Leather Bonnet Straps. Overwhelmed by the generosity of Rob who is a 1800’s cavalry leather expert and offered to help make two leather hood straps for the MGA. Showed me all the tools, traditional stitches, it was awesome. We even had a set of new old stock BMC works competition hood straps (pic 6) to base our design on, provided by Steve. I was able to use Rob’s A to mock-up the straps and see how they’re going to look... think it’ll be awesome! I will shorten them before mounting, don’t worry- just leaving the ends raw until I make a piece of end trim.
