Look at this beauty!! This little one let me pick it up for a quick cuddle too! I moved it to a location with less foot traffic for safe keeping, it was originally in the main hallway of my apartment building. Google shows this moth species might be red like this one, brown, or yellow. This is an Io moth (eye-oh), also nicknamed the peacock moth. In Greek mythology, Io was a mortal princess of Argos whom Zeus fell in love with. In order to hide her from his jealous wife Hera, he transformed her into a white heifer. Hera became wise to Zeus’ deception and sent Argus Panoptes, a giant with 100 eyes, to watch Io and prevent Zeus from meeting with her. Argus was eventually slain by Hermes, the messenger god, and Hera is said to have adorned her peacocks’ feathers (a symbol of the goddess) with his 100 eyes. My friend Mike called me this morning because he found an injured moth. This poor little guy is a Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) that seems to have emerged from his cocoon with a malformed left hindwing. He's also sustained damage to his left antenna. And, yes, because of his large, feathery antennae, I can tell he's a male. We couldn't leave him in the parking lot - he'd get squished! So I brought him home. . This little beauty has a large, fluffy body and gorgeous patterning on his wings. The hindwings feature a prominent blue eyespot. His wingspan is about 5.5 inches. Like all Saturn moths, he has no mouth and will not eat in his adult form. He will probably live less than one week (which is significantly longer than he would last in the wild, unable to fly! ) . Third day of 33, the number 3 represents creative potential but struggle with focus, but also the importance of finding a deeper meaning in life. Upon the fuzzy leaves that grow yellow flowers in the summer, are the mesmerising, gorgeous sight, of Mullein Moth Caterpillars!!!! 🐛 Easily noticed, as aqua, yellow, and black spotted wriggly caterpillars smother the Mullein Leaves! I was overjoyed finding these Mullein moth caterpillars, they're the gems of the Mullein plant, a spectacle to see every summer! 🐛 But they don't just grow up on Great Mullein, they'll also eat Buddleia, other Mulleins and figworts. And after 30 days of continues munching, they pupate in a very hard cocoon surrounded by small rocks. They have such a thick cocoon and surrounding soil layer because of how long the caterpillars can stay in their pupa stage; up to 5 years in some cases!!!! But after surviving harsh weather conditions they emerge as a magnificent moth resembling a stick! 🐛 We're hoping to see some beautiful moths emerge next year or maybe this year, as we are rearing some of the Mullein Moth Caterpillars to watch their growth! 🐛 These caterpillars are showing off their greatest YELLOW for today's colour from @itsyourgirlnature #naturerainbow21 challenge! Meet Rumple, the Reddish Light Arches or Dark Arches moth caterpillar! Crawling across our garden was this lovely little caterpillar, a really nice surprise (apart from it's powerful nip 😬). A new species that I am now rearing, so excited to see the moth! #aprilfirsts21 with @krazylady25 🐛 Both, the Reddish Light Arches moth and Dark Arches, feed on the bases of various grass roots and stems, before pupating in the soil and old leaves. As we found this one looking for something, and crawling across our path, we've placed him in a container with leaf mulch and soil. And we've got brilliant news, he's gone in the ground (video 7)! 🐛 The moths are often seen flying from June-August, and are one of the most commonest moths to catch in your moth trap around those times. Some Beauty’s, for sure! ☺️🦋💚 Last night we did our second moth trap of the year and caught 12 moths in 5 species, including 1 Brindled Beauty (photos 1-5), 4 Hebrew characters (photos 7-9), 2 early Grey’s, 4 clouded drabs (photo 10), and 1 early toothed stripe (photo 6). Look at the 3 hebrew characters in photo 7, it's really interesting seeing the different shades of colours they come in. 🤓 . I had two new species in the trap today, the Brindled Beauty (perfectly named 👍) and a early toothed striped (fascinating). Both for @krazylady25 #aprilfirsts21 challenge. . The Brindled Beauty moth was a sure surprise, it was soooo cute and had a REALLY fluffy face and large antenna (which you can see in photo 5)! The Brindled Beauty that I caught is a male, the males are more often seen and are attracted to light, flying late in the night, whereas the females are rarely seen. . The Early Toothed Stripe moth is a fairly common species, flying at spring time in a single generation, and occupying woodland habitats. . #lepidopteragirl caterpillar update! 💚 Spring is here so here come the caterpillars, I found another today! Looking out the window, among the bees buzzing on the blossoms and the Sparrows collecting moss and old grasses to use for their nests I spotted, upon a willow bud an angle shades moth caterpillar that I named Willow, in photo 2 she looks like a rainbow, and just how rainbows brighten up anyone's day and fills them full of joy this caterpillar did the same for me. But Willow the angle shades caterpillar wasn’t the green colour form that most people have been seeing, instead she was more of a brown colour. It’s amazing how much nature can adapt, even if it’s the same species of moth caterpillar it can be a different colour morph to help it survive. 🐛 . Not just that though, I’m also looking after 14 Scarlet tiger moth caterpillars 😃 (vid 1). For me, the more caterpillars the merrier 😅, but it does mean more food to collect everyday and to clean out more poo everyday 😂. Also, found a mystery caterpillar (pic 5 and vid 6), I named her Poppy. Poppy could be a sawfly larvae or a moth caterpillar but I’m not sure, looking after it so I hope to see what she turns into. ID help for Poppy would be much appreciated 💚. . Photo 6, new life! After the munching wiggly larvae stage of the Beautiful moth, then comes the pupa stage. The pupas are of an angle shades and then the other two are small angle shades. The new generations of this year. 💚 I can’t wait for them to hatch 🤞😃. The wings of Spring! 💚🌸 Spring has made it's #marchmagic21 to wake up this beautiful angle shades out of it's pupa today!! 😃 Doing my morning routine of checking on all the pupas, caterpillars and the Vapourer moth eggs (I can't wait for them to hatch), I spotted something moving inside the pupa container, it was... One of the angle shade moths, it was Blossom! 😃 I was so excited seeing this beauty and getting the pleasure of holding her, feeling so happy that I had successfully raised an angle shades and I hope to raise many more to try help their species. 💚 I loved looking with my small magnifying glass at the incredible compound eyes of the moth 👀 vid 3. 🦋🌸 This is my first ever angle shades I have seen so when I first saw it's stunning wings I was already in love with this moth, the wings (vid 2) look alot like dried up leaves, a brilliant disguise against predators. These moths are on the wing from May to October but can be seen all year round. The earliest time the angle shade moth hatches is March, so a perfect time for Blossom to hatch. It was grey and wet today with showers of rain coming nonstop so this little moth certainly made my day, the rain has now carmed down so we will be releasing her at night when hopefully she'll be safer from any predators. In vid 4 is a close up of her enjoying the sugerwater I gave her, watch vid 5 to see her head moving up and down, moving her proboscis in the sugar even more 😋. Soo cute, pic 7 is of her little fluffy bum which I just had to take a photo of, I hope you don't mind your bum picture going viral Blossom 🤣. I just saw one of these hummingbird moths for the first time the other day at Colchester pond. Had never seen one before. Went outside and somehow this giant one got inside my garden netting and when I opened it to release it it didn't fly away. It just clung to my hand. I tried to set it down on some wood. It jumped back onto my shorts and climbed onto my shirt and stayed there while I walked and watered my gardens. I tried again to place it on something and it seems like it has a broken front leg 😢 so it stayed on me as I walked upstairs to my porch and I managed to get it in a mason jar laying on its side so it can crawl out...it hasn't tried so I put some fresh flowers at the mouth of the jar to see if it will at least eat.
