I don't think I've been paying enough attention to the birds in my garden because earlier in the week I was presented with a lovely surprise of a newly fledged Wood Pigeon ! 🐦🌿💛 For a few years now there's been a breeding pattern with a couple of Woodys here. It starts early March when the female decides to use the ivy outside my bedroom window to build it's precarious not-so-discreet nest. 🐦🌿💛 Every year it becomes victim more than once to egg robbing from those sly Magpies that listen our for those familiar pigeon purrs and watch their noisy travels to and from the nest. 🐦🌿💛 These Wood Pigeons seem to just take it in their stride and start again. And usually by late summer the magpies have moved on with their own brood to feed in the newly harvest fields with other corvids and the Woodys finally succeed. 🐦🌿💛 So why was I so surprised this time when I looked out the bedroom window and saw this squab sitting in the Buddleia bush one morning? Baby toadlets and their release ! This photo might be blurry, but quality doesn't matter, it's the experience in nature that counts ! This encounter put a smile on my face, because it was the first time a fledgling Robin decided to visit our feeder! I could see this little one was just starting to grow new feathers; it is the bird moulting season after all... This blackbird juvenile - Chummy - is becoming quite chilled. He sits outside the back door and lets me step over him and today I saw him on the lawn and walked back and forth and he didn’t move. I became worried as I thought he was blind as his eyes were grey ⬅️ but then he opened them and looked at me as if to say ‘what’s the problem?’ Thankfully he was just resting. A young herring gull ( at least I think it’s a Herring Gull, happy to be corrected) flew into our garden and then didn’t seem able to fly out again! I watched it walk around and around the paths and on the grass when I went to check it was ok it didn’t try to get away, just looked at me with sad eyes, it eventually followed me out on to the front drive where it had some open space and took a little run up and then took off and flew away. Our #butterflycount after the rain !😊 💚🦋 Ringlets and meadow browns were struggling to fly in the opposite direction of the harsh wind. But their was a beautiful Silver Y moth that decided to make an appearance! 💚🦋 Last year, when we went out ever evening, I would be chasing the Sliver Y moths to have a closer look at them ! They were everywhere, feeding off the small Buddleia Bush in the corner and flying out of the bramble bushes that they would have hiden in from the heat of the sun. 💚🦋 It's clear to see in the videos that this moth has a metallic silver y shape on its wings. The colours of their forewings vary greatly, and may be affected by development temperature. A special encounter with baby newts - ones with frilly gills and as adorable as can be !🥰 💚🦎 It was wonderful spotting 10+ newts in our pond today, they are absolutely adorable aquatic babies 😍 I mean just look at those puffy gills 😍. 💚🦎 Newts are a lovely sight in our gardens, and especially in our wildlife ponds when it's the breading season. Because, if your lucky, then you might get to experience the males perform an elaborate courtship dance before the females lay their eggs! 💚🦎 The eggs of both the two most common newts in the UK; the Palmate and Smooth newt, are both wrapped up in the leaves of pond plants. Two weeks later and the larvae, hidden in the depths of the pond, would have hatched. Going into the miniature world of butterfly eggs ! 🥚🐛 We had a closer look at the eggs on our nasturtiums today, and we found 45 Large White eggs and 27 Small White eggs! 🥚🐛 I've been looking after these White butterfly eggs, and the Large White eggs (photo 1) might not have hatched yet. But I was given the joy to see my first ever Small White caterpillars which hatched after about 3 days (photo 2)! 🥚🐛 You can tell if a Large or Small White has come to lay on your nasturtiums by looking on the top side - for Small White eggs - or on the bottom side - for Large White eggs! The other difference is, Large Whites lay eggs in clusters, not singular like Small Whites. 🥚🐛 Nasturtiums are a great plant for White Butterflies and the flowers are adored by the Bumblebees. We only planted our nasturtiums in April this year and it didn't take them long to turn into a thriving host for wildlife. This is the crow family. They have had 3 babies this year, largely fed on dog biscuits that I put out for the foxes. Basically, Mr Crow waits on the wire for me to put out the fox food then comes down and shoves about 6 biscuits in his beak at once and hides them in various places, my neighbours thatched roof being one of them. The first Red Admiral release of 2021 ! 🦋💜 We noticed this beauty in the Butterfly Net just as it started getting dark. Small Tortoiseshell Caterpillars ! 🐛🦋 (Well done to anyone who guessed write on the suprise that Small Tortoiseshell left me 😁) 🐛🦋 Small Tortoiseshells are gorgeous looking butterflies and they have lovely looking caterpillars aswell ! Which will feed gregariously on Nettle within a loose web for about 21 days, until dispersing when nearly fully grown. They create these silk webs (photo 5) because it makes them look larger than they actually are, which gives them a more likely chance of survival! 🐛🦋 I'm so happy I came across these wonderful gem's of the Nettles because now I get to watch them transform, grow, and change into a beautiful butterfly 🥰 🐛🦋 These caterpillars will be the second generation of Small Tortoiseshells, usually they're laid in June and then hatch in July, to then overwinter as an adult and emerge in early spring. But because of the harsh weather early on, these caterpillars have appeared later, showing another affect of climate change 😔. 🐛🦋 Loss of habitat and their foodplant also affects Small Tortoiseshells, aswell as a nonnative parasitic fly which has become a big threat to their caterpillars. It’s getting quieter in the garden. Some birds are in moult or currently seeking shade from the heat. Fledgling numbers are dwindling although the House Sparrows are busy with young and there are two Blackbird fledglings still left in the garden. Our first ever adult male Slow Worm ! 🦎🦎 It was very exciting finding our first every adult male recently, and he sure was a handsome and large fella! Taken last evening as the sun was setting out at the lake. Don asked me what filter I used, I told him (after I quit laughing) that the filter was a natural one called "Sahara dust". He had missed the weather report talking about the dust coming through our area. The next generation of Red Admiral Butterflies ! 🥐🦋 The gorgeous Red Admiral Butterfly Chrysalis was what we found hidden amongst the Pellitory today! It's brown colour to blend in and it's gorgeous gold markings to reflect an autumn leaf 😍. 🥐🦋 This Chrysalis might not look like much, but big changes are happening inside. A butterfly day !😃 💜🦋🐛 While watching the Large and Small Whites feast with the Small Tortoiseshells on our Buddleia (otherwise known as the Butterfly Bush). The Mayfly For @wildlife_drummer_girl #summerspotchallenge #minibeastmagic21 and @krazylady25 #offspringwatch 🐛 The Mayfly's life begins in water 💧 and are there for most of their lives. Living in aquatic vegetation 🍃 eating water plants and algae. When they emerge from the water, they shed their skins and fly. On on land, they sometimes form swarms and drive campers nuts 😜. They are harmless and because they are small and helpless, they are a tasty food for birds and even squirrels. 🐛 I was surprised to find it on my picnic table, they usually stay close to water. Our first moth survey for #MothNight and we get our first ever, absolutely magnificent, ELEPHANT HAWKMOTH!! 😀💕 Every year we would find the fascinating caterpillars of the Elephant Hawkmoth and we new they were in the area. So every time we put out the moth trap we would hope an Elephant Hawkmoth would come, and yesterday, it did !!😃 😀💕 These bright pink and moor green coloured moths are dusk fliers. From May to July, in one generation, the Elephant Hawkmoth feeds off honeysuckle with its long proboscis and constantly searches for a mate. 😀💕 We are very lucky to have a population of Elephant Hawkmoths in our garden, as we have loads of Rosebay Willow Herb which is the caterpillars main foodplant. 😀💕 The caterpillars sure show off the 'Elephant' part of their name, as they have a large 'trunk' !😄 But they also have a large eyespot that scares away predators! Oooooh, just back from a quick backroad adventure and I have a two-fer with this post for minibeastmagic21 and #summerspotchallenge for @wildlife_drummer_girl and #offspringwatch for @krazylady25 🦋 First thing to mention is the Skipper Butterfly, which I believe is the Southern Broken Dash Skipper. I had to look through a LOT of pictures to find the one that looks closest to the one in my picture. I didn't know that Skippers have many structural features of both Butterflies and Moths, but being diurnal, are considered Butterflies. 🌸 This beautiful wildflower, is called an American Star-Thistle or American Basket-Flower and Thornless-Thistle, and grows natively throughout most of North America. 🌸 The colors vary from Rose/Mauve, Lavender, to White or Near White. It's petals look like a Thistle, with a cream color center. They attract Butterflies 🦋😍🙂 like the Skipper in pictures 1&3, bees 🐝, and birds. They bloom from early summer to fall in fields and along roadways. The flower can be up to 4 inches in diameter, and each flowerhead is composed of disk flowers. Here is a Hackberry Emperor butterfly 🦋 for #minibeastmagic21 and #summerspotchallenge @wildlife_drummer_girl #offspringwatch @krazylady25 🦋 Found her fluttering around my backyard and landed on the Elm long enough for me to get these shots. They have a range between Mexico to Nebraska as well as throughout the Eastern US. 🦋 These Butterflies typically can be found along river bottoms, but can be found in upland areas where the host plant is also found. Historically, dense swarms have been documented in some southern states. 🦋 This one looks like a female, (which are larger than males) and some of the spots on the lower or hind wings have blue-green centers. Adults have a wingspan of 2.0 to 2.6 inches. Adults feed on tree sap, fermenting fruit, dung, and rarely flower nectar. Keeping my eye out for fledglings for the first day of July ! 💚 As I approached our local spot in the woodland, I was greeted by the appearance of a Green Woodpecker fledgling, calling for its mum ! 💚 I had never seen a Woodpecker fledgling before so this was a moment to cherish forever! while it made its way to cover, it tried to flap it's fledgling wings that hadn't fully developed. 💚 As we gave the little Yaffle (the name of a young woodpecker) some space, the mum came calling back and came to feed it's baby! 💚 It was the perfect habitat for this family as the fields and woodland margins will supply them with their favourite foods which is the very humble yet exceptionally abundant ant. 💚 Green Woodpeckers are very secretive birds, and we've heard their call but they never seem to show up. Three amigo’s. These 3 young starlings watched the adults feeding the fledglings on the lawn. According to the RSPB the chicks are fed entirely on insects and their larvae, spiders and earthworms for 12 days, after which the diet is more varied. The young fledge at about 3 weeks and continue to be fed for a week or two until they are independent! More than 70% of eggs laid produce fledged young. In the past one third of juveniles survived their first year of life, but this has reduced to only 15 percent. We have two baby Wood Pigeons nesting in a shrub against the kitchen wall. This is the first time I have seen them alone, nestled down in their nest. 🍄 I found a whole bunch of these little Pleated Inkcap mushrooms this morning 🌄 before I noticed the cicada. They are also called Pleated Parasol and Little Japanese Umbrella. #summerspotchallenge @wildlife_drummer_girl 🍄 These are common and widespread in Britain and Ireland, but can also be found across mainland Europe and other parts of the world 🌎 including North America. #offspringwatch @krazylady25 🍄 Usually found in short grass, it can also be seen in flower garden areas. Cicada First one I've seen one here this year. Normally a rather loud buggie, he was just crawling along looking for a place to hide. #offspringwatch @krazylady25 #minibeastmagic21 #summerspotchallenge with @wildlife_drummer_girl and #joshswildjune for "eyes" @josh_by_nature 🌿They have prominent eyes set far apart, short antennae, and membranous front wings. 🌿 The males "sing" using a special structure called a symbol, which are one each side below the abdominal region. 🌿 Some cicadas can play dead when threatened and the majority of adults are active during the day, making their rather loud noise at dawn or dusk. 🌿 The exclusive North American genus, Magicicada, are periodical cicadas spending the majority of their lives as underground nymphs and emerge every 13-17 years, depending on the species and location. Some emerge every year, and live in the bark of a tree 🌳 like my big Elm tree. For Day 28 of @thewildlifetrusts #30dayswild I made a visit to a very special place near my home in order to follow the prompt 'keep an eye out for newborns.' 🐦💚 It's an area that's close to my heart and plays an important part of my support for @save_the_house_sparrows in not having House Sparrows as regular visitors to my garden but having these gorgeous birds as part of an everyday soundtrack that I grew up with, I get comfort from visiting this habitat where I can enjoy watching and listening to them. 🐦💚 And today they sure brightened up a dull Monday because despite continuous surrounding disturbance to their area with building and removal of some habitat over the last few months, they're positively thriving !
