❤️🔥Teamwork makin' the dream work❤️🔥 We really enjoyed the fine company up on Bent Mountain this past Saturday and boy, was that warmth needed on a super cold and blustery day. 🌬️😬❄️😶🌫️🌨️ A rad crew jumped in with the paints on a new "Mountain To Mountain" banner project we schemed up with the help of POWHR & WV Rivers pals, and we're looking forward to pulling it across the finish line (with your help of course) on Sat, Feb 3rd with @powhrcoalition , @wvrivers at the Graham House in Summers County, West Virginia for the second Mountain Valley Watch volunteer appreciation day (LINK IN BIO)! Artfully bringing us close together as well were the extraordinarily talented and gracious Hannah Johnson (caller), the fellas of Nobody's Business (rowdy Appalachian stringband) and Randy Leech (audio engineering pro), who all set the stage and let it rip for our first MVP-fightin' coalition square dance! This old crow in particular at ARTivism HQ was so busy dancing with old and new pals that we're short on pics – more to come, friends. We cannot be thankful enough for 1) the Mountain Valley Watch volunteers we gathered in appreciation for; 2) the fine folks who helped organize this event and get it all together (POWHR, WV Rivers, Preserve Bent Mountain, Bent Mountain Center, @appalachianvoices and 3) the awesome ARTivist friends who bring us back to joyful community in the face of MVP's destruction. This fight against the Mountain Valley Pipeline is in its tenth year. In 2014, the power elite said it was a done deal. Faculty members of the South Africa’s University of the Free State (UFS) are in town. The Center for Appalachian Studies has strengthen the existing partnership, and this is the last leg of the federally funded “Mountain-to-Mountain” grant project. Faculty, staff and graduate students at both institutions have benefited greatly in teaching, research, mentorship, scholarship, human relationships and more. The Mountain-to-Mountain research projects in the High Country and South Africa were possible thanks to the $500,000 grant project, funded through the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in South Africa. He co-directed the project with Dr. Grey Magaiza, head of the UFS Qwaqwa Campus Department of Community Development. Grant project collaborators Dr. Julie Shepherd-Powell, our director Trevor McKenzie, and Dr. Katherine Ledford, who is also the founding chair of International Connections of the Appalachian Studies Association have embraced the project with a very special dedication. 'Nothing less than fully alive' (in his own words), bikepacker Rahul Rajagopal @cycling_nomad decided one day that he was going to do long trips on his two wheels, to make the most of travel and his love of landscape. A bike technician and e-commerce coordinator by day, he undertook a special journey through the Western Ghats, last year - camping out under the stars and partaking of some of the most beautiful views there are, in these ancient mountains. Meet the OGs of the Palanis! The Palni Hills Conservation Council (PHCC) @phcc_kodai was formed in 1985 to save the Palani Hills from further degradation. These dreamers were doers, taking on the political establishment and public apathy. Team PHCC consists of environmentalists, botanists, wildlife enthusiasts and ordinary residents, and conducts conservation and restoration programmes to protect the indigenous flora and fauna of Palani Hills, so as to preserve and nurture their habitat. What’s next for the pioneering organization, asks resident and PHCC member @lathikageorge in ‘Sustaining the Palani Hills’, as she traces their triumphs and tribulations. Stories find both virtual and physical abodes in the Sikkim Project - @projectsikkim - and a reading room, community undertakings in scenic Namchi, Sikkim. ‘Scroll through the Sikkim Project’s website and you’ll see articles on a range of topics, from shamans and folk music to farming and the challenges faced by women in the retail sector,' writes @shraddhacat. 'There’s a piece titled ‘Tibetan Calligraphy: A Spiritual Journey’, which explores the beauty of the artform through the lens of Tibetan philosophy… Another essay, titled ‘Suicide and Suicidal Behaviour in Sikkim: An Overview’, shines a light on mental health in Sikkimese society…. The writers are residents of Sikkim, stories are submitted on a 15 volunteer basis and the entire operation runs on donations.’ Prava Rai, the founder of the Sikkim project, also started a community library programme known as the Reading Room, which aims to promote reading in the region. What are approaches that the community-driven mountain projects showcased in this issue have taken? ‘We put the farmer at the centre of the story. Every box we sent out had the name of the farmer who grew the apples, for example. We sold the majority of our produce via social media, and we regularly did live videos on Instagram featuring the people who grow the food we sell. Especially in those early days, this was a very new way to connect with where one’s food comes from, and people responded to it very well', Tons Valley Shop co-founder Shubhra Chatterji @historywali told our reporter, Vahishta Mistry @vahishta. 'Through RTI applications Dr Muhammed discovered that sanitation workers do not fall under the Minimum Wages Act and are paid only around Rs250 per day, with the rate being fixed by the local authority. They are not considered on par with other labourers and work 10–14 hours a day, with no overtime; most spend at least a quarter of their salary on commuting expenses and are not protected by labour laws, despite being government staff. Dr Muhammed began to mobilise the local labourers to form a registered union and then asked them to consider entrepreneurship as an alternative or supplemental source of income.'
