“I certainly prefer a good black-and-white picture to a bad one in colour. All the more so because in some cases so-called ‘natural colour’ impoverishes the imagination. The more you mimic reality, the more you lose in the imitation. Black and white, in this sense, offers wider margins for the imagination. I know that after having seen a good black-and-white film, many spectators, when asked about its chromatic aspect, will say, ‘The colours were beautiful,’ because each viewer lends to the otherwise black-and-white images the colours he has within himself. Making films in colour is, I believe, an impossible operation, for cinema is movement, colour immobility; to try to blend these two artistic expressions is a desperate ambition, like wanting to breathe under water. Let me explain. In order to truly express the chromatic values of a face, a landscape, some scene or other, it is necessary to light it according to certain criteria that are functions of both personal taste and technical exigency. And all goes well so long as the camera doesn’t move. But as soon as the camera moves in on the faces or objects to be lighted, the intensity of the light is heightened or lessened, and all the chromatic values are intensified or lessened as a result. Ha lavorato anche nel cinema, soprattutto con Fellini. «È l’uomo che più di ogni altro ha capito l’arte di noi carristi e la mia in particolare. Con lui ho lavorato per tre film: I Vitelloni, Boccaccio ’70 e Casanova. Mi toccò di costruire una grande copia di Anita Ekberg, solo i seni avevano un diametro di due metri e Fellini ne fu entusiasta. Gli piacque moltissimo anche la testa fantoccio di Alberto Sordi nei Vitelloni. Ma a farlo emozionare più di tutto fu la polena alta più di otto metri dalle sembianze di donna del film Casanova; eravamo a Cinecittà e quando Federico la vide iniziò a sorridere: “Bella, bellissima, magnifica. Intento con ina pasión basta, exacerbada, me detengo en lo más oscuro de mis pensamientos para escuchar lo que tienen para decirme. Persigo lo inalcanzable, lo etéreo. Doy un paso al frente y vuelvo a empezar. En marcha no hay porque llorar… Las horas muertas , muertas están. No hay nada ajeno a la vida, incluso la muerte como diría mi maestro Hector, “hace parte de”… El sin sabor de lo perdido. La textura yerta de la negación… Un pensamiento tácito, ¿Quienes somos cuando nadie nos ve? Ahora me pregunto Ahora. En donde están las risas y los momentos de desconexión. Soy una ilusión que se soñó a si misma un día Soy aquella que busca en los sueños No pasa una noche sin que te sueñe mi querida Fellini, mi adorada, mi preciosa, vienes a saludarme en mis sueños y yo despierto feliz… A veces no te veo, a veces solo escucho tu nombre o te leo, o como hace poco, rompí en llanto mientras te recordaba, eso me pasa mucho en la vida real, cada vez es menos frecuente, cada vez el tránsito se hace más llevadero, el misterio de la desaparición de tu cuerpo es algo que me contarás cuando nos reencontremos, tal vez deba volverlo historia muchas veces, tal vez sea mi manera de sanar. Llevar tu recuerdo en mi arte, llevar tu presencia en mi corazón. A cada día le basta con su propio afán, dicen… y yo lo creo. Creo y creo, creo en la divina fuerza que me acompaña cuando estás conmigo, y tú siempre estás conmigo. Reúno mis pedazos rotos y los transformo en Arte, en Amor, en Vida. La vida va de vivir.
