𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗿 Along my lower abdomen, just below my bikini line, lies a scar: a beautiful but painful reminder of the life I carried; a beautiful but painful reminder of the life I birthed; a beautiful but painful reminder of the life I lost; a beautiful but painful reminder of my Matthew. Hidden beneath my scar, my sacred womb dwells, the place that once carried, nurtured, protected, and loved my precious son. Oh, how my womb has mourned our loss but oh, how she remains so faithful to me, despite all that she has endured. I chose to birth Matts naturally but, due to prolonged labour and with Matts being a high-risk baby, my obstetrician performed an emergency caesarean section: an incision was made through my abdomen, where my scar now remains. As many women know, recovering from a caesar is no small feat. It is particularly hard when your baby is in NICU, recovering from a major operation and his heart has a life-threatening condition. In those early days post caesar, it's hard to walk and do most ordinary tasks, let alone get in a car to visit your baby in the hospital, and do this every single day for a full month. My hidden scar represents so much: not only the physical changes that my body underwent but also the emotional scars that I’m left with. Initially, I was not bothered by my scar for it portrayed the beautiful life I carried, birthed, and got to hold in my arms, but now there are days that I find it hard to look at my scar; the memories come flooding back; memories that are both beautiful and painful. My scar may be hidden, concealed by layers of clothing, but the depth of my scar is not unnoticed…it is a beautiful and painful reminder of my Matthew.
