In my home, twelve Ashoka trees (Saraca asoca (Roxb.) Willd) were growing closely together. Their canopies created a shady area, even at noon. My friends and I would often play hide-and-seek there, taking advantage of the darkness created by the trees. However, the trees were considered very sacred, so the maids in our home always had some or other stories to keep us away from them. My grandfather once told us the story of Ashoka Vatika, where King Ravan kept Sita as a prisoner after her abduction. My Amma, while at home, used to do 12 circumambulations of the trees every morning and evening. Once, when the trees were in flower, she explained to me the uniqueness of those flowers. #NatGeoExplorer and wildlife biologist Ruthmery Pillco Huarcaya (@ruthy_treesandbears) studies the Andean bears of Peru and their role in the elaborate Amazonian ecosystem. Because of their ability to travel long distances – from the lowlands to the cloud forest of the Andes mountains – they play a crucial role in seed dispersal and regeneration of the environment. Their migratory patterns help promote the growth of forests at cooler, higher altitudes as the climate warms. To better understand the bears’ diet and movements, Pillco Huarcaya relies on her specially trained dog named Ukuku to help sniff out bear scat. Ukuku (meaning “bear” in Quechua, the Indigenous language of the Peruvian Andes) has proven to be the perfect research partner and a vital member of the team. Pillco Huarcaya’s work with Andean bears is part of the National Geographic and @Rolex #PerpetualPlanet Amazon Expedition, a multi-year, comprehensive exploration of the Amazon River which spans the entire basin, from the Andes to the Atlantic. Portrait of San Woman - Kalahari. The San are the oldest inhabitants of Southern Africa, where they have lived for at least 20 000 years. The term San is commonly used to refer to a diverse group of hunter-gatherers living in Southern Africa who share historical and linguistic connections. The San were/are also referred to as Bushmen. There are many different San groups - they have no collective name for themselves, and the terms 'Bushman', 'San', 'Basarwa' (in Botswana) are used. The term, 'bushman', came from the Dutch term, 'bossiesman', which meant 'bandit' or 'outlaw'. This term was given to the San during their long battle against the colonists. The San interpreted this as a proud and respected reference to their brave fight for freedom from domination and colonization. The San have no formal authority figure or chief, but govern themselves by group consensus. Disputes are resolved through lengthy discussions where all involved have a chance to make their thoughts heard until some agreement is reached. Certain individuals may assume leadership in specific spheres in which they excel, such as hunting or healing rituals, but they cannot achieve positions of general influence or power. White colonists found this very confusing when they tried to establish treaties with the San. Leadership among the San is kept for those who have lived within that group for a long time, who have achieved a respectable age, and good character. My home had numerous coconut trees, jackfruit trees, mango trees, custard apple trees, and pomegranate plants - the list is quite long. While every fruit has its seeds inside, the cashew fruit stands out with an exemption. I had wondered for a long time how this had happened. As kids, we discussed many possibilities without evidence supporting our theories. Later, during my visit to a cashew factory, I came across a pamphlet that explained the growth of a cashew tree, its fruits, and the process of cleaning, packing, and exporting cashew nuts. The cashew fruit comprises the swollen fruit stem and the fruit. Cuando pensamos en refugios para murciélagos, pensamos en cuevas, ¿pero sabes que hay más de 20 especies de murciélagos que pueden modificar las hojas de las plantas y convertirlas en sus hogares como si fueran tiendas de campaña? Solo que este sorprendente comportamiento es poco conocido y muchos aspectos, como la construcción de estas tiendas, siguen siendo un misterio. Por eso nació el proyecto Leaf Architects. Financiado por la National Geographic Society @insidenatgeo , el proyecto tiene como objetivo documentar la relación de los murciélagos tienderos con las plantas que utilizan y estimar el impacto de la dispersión de semillas a lo largo de su distribución neotropical. A pesar de su pequeño tamaño, algunos de estos murciélagos comen frutos con semillas grandes, muchas de las cuales provienen de plantas utilizadas por los humanos. Por ello, el proyecto quiere saber qué especies de plantas eligen y por qué. ¿Cuánto contribuyen estos murciélagos a la regeneración del bosque? Compararemos los patrones regionales en el uso de plantas y semillas dispersas y capacitaremos a jóvenes científicos para estimular la investigación sobre este tema.
