Killer whales as far as the eye can see right in front of the most iconic landscape on the planet. While we got a few great Orca encounters this one was definitely my favourite as a pod of some 10-20 whales entered the Gerlache Strait on a blue bird day; most likely on their way to hunt penguins these stealthy hunters cruised right past our boat going almost completely unnoticed. While the polar bears are sure to get the adrenaline going the penguins are guaranteed to get the heart pumping. Their funny antics often remind me of my best friends wondering the city at 4am; flightless, clumsy, and awful at pretending like it didn't happen, penguins are perhaps the most comedic of all the species I've had the pleasure of spending time with. While today is dedicated to penguins I've had them on my mind much of this season as the bird flu slowly spreads to the untouched islands of South Georgia and beyond. 4.20.24: With a volcanic eruption at 4:30am, our day began, followed by a very relaxing hike in the morning at Fernandina. During our walk, we were able to spot a nice group of iguanas and a few snakes as well. Then, we had the chance to go snorkeling to refresh ourselves. The Sea Lions in the Galapagos were so curious/playful with us when we were snorkeling! They'd swim all around us and even come right up to your face but not quite touch you and then nosedive under you. 4.18.24: It’s day one of the first northbound trip of the season, and we have already set expectations through the roof. We’re bound for Southeast Alaska and just spent the day in Desolation Sound in southern British Columbia. The skies were cloudless, the sea state near glass, the skyline saw-toothed with glaciated peaks. As we slid toward our anchorage an unexpected disturbance ruffled the water’s mirror surface. Dolphins. Lots of them. Approximately 100 Pacific white-sided dolphins, all porpoising west towards the mouth of the fjord system we just entered. Spotting our vessel, they made a slight detour past our bow before continuing on. As we watched them pass five more dolphins, their largest cousin the killer whale, joined the fray and completely changed the dynamic! Following close behind the group, these killer whales closed the gap before isolating one of the white-sided dolphins and tossing it into the air like a rag doll. Frozen in Time - Scott’s hut abandoned in 1917 was untouched till it was dug out of the snow and ice in 1956 and found in a remarkable state of preservation due to the freezing temperatures and dry climate. During the winter of 1911, 25 men of the Terra Nova shore party lived in the hut where there were sleeping and working areas divided by a bulkhead of boxes plus a separate stable for nineteen Siberian ponies. Prefabricated in England for Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s British Antarctic (Terra Nova) Expedition 1910 - 1913 and his second and final famed attempt for the geographic South Pole. The expedition ultimately failed. Conservation by the Antarctic Heritage Trust - in 2015 the seven-year conservation program conserved more than 11,000 artifacts on site. Two photos of the fogbow we encountered in Storefjord, Greenland in the fog rising over newly forming surface ice. Fogbows are formed by the same light refraction that creates rainbows. The third photo shows the ice as our ship broke through. The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship is a two-year commitment. The first year includes my expedition to Antarctica and the pre-expedition workshop at National Geographic headquarters in Washington, DC, that I just returned from. The workshop gave me an opportunity to meet the other 34 Fellows in the 2024 cohort, including my shipmate, as well as gain valuable knowledge about the Fellowship, learn about life on board the ship, and understand my responsibilities as an ambassador of the Teacher Fellowship program. Artisans are fundamental to cultural identity. A traditional handcraft can tell us so much about people — their religion, aesthetic, agriculture, climate and more; while Artisans who forge new styles can influence future trends and aesthetics globally. The world is losing hand skillsets at an alarming rate, and with them we lose a precious window into many aspects of remote cultures. The Lindblad Expeditions Artisan Fund was founded in 2007 to address this concern and to help support artisans in the places we explore. Sometimes this support comes in the form of pairing local artisans with a more experienced artisan in their medium. Other times, we are helping communities of artisans identify alternative, more sustainable raw materials as the natural resources around them have been depleted. The harsh conditions in Greenland tend to create small, delicate-looking fauna that is remarkably resilient. We found this Arctic Fireweed covered with frost on an early hike in mid September.
