This relates to the idea that experiences of love, well-being, and belonging, are impacted by the history of people and how they grow. “Indigenous peoples in many places around the world have been remarkably resilient, and there is growing recognition that the loss of their traditional knowledge, including their “foodways,” is a loss to us all.” This can help “remind us of the importance of being in “right relationship” with people and the planet and seeing all creatures as “our kin.” A frequently cited quote from Dr. Kimmerer is, “All flourishing is mutual.” A favorite from Tyson Yunkaporta is, “All Law-breaking comes from … that original sin of placing yourself above the land or other people.” To reflect, I believe that growing our understanding of others’ difficulties and challenges they face in life can guide us in the right direction to be in the “right relationship”. I may be late on my posts but let’s continue to educate ourselves on racial equity. Day 3 of this challenge focuses on Embrace, Fierce, and Love. The concept above explains what it means to love differently and more deeply. FSNE also explains that the “love ethic” is recognized to be a driving force behind many social justice movements. Love in this situation stands “unflinchingly against mistreatment” but also “ it holds on to a fundamental regard for each and every person’s humanity”. To me, love means to open your heart to the truths, feelings, and sensations of a community coming together to support something through courage and vulnerability. I’m happy to announce that I will be graduating this May with an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from Orange Coast College – and I will transfer to a four-year university this fall. First, I graduated from Newport Harbor High School in 2020, and now four years later, I’m about to be an official graduate from the excellent Orange Coast College. It was a lot of fun being an OCC pirate, taking classes in Public Speaking, Argumentation, Spanish, Psychology, and American Government. I am excited to announce that I have registered to participate in Food Solutions New England’s 21-day Racial Equity Habit-Building Challenge! I believe that as a nation we can always continue to further our knowledge on the many issues facing America today. Day 1 is titled Embracing Community. I am going to share the most important thing I learned from what FSNE shared with me and reflect of one of their prompts. With this weeks theme we are focusing on shifting from “me to we”. I learned that the most valuable thing I can do to benefit my community is to look at it with an alternate vision. This means looking at the population dealing with food insecurity as an opportunity to connect and not a project to be fixed. Reflecting on what community means to me is an exciting one because I am apart of a small community not only in my home town but within the Miss America Opportunity. Community means coming together to celebrate each other and our successes as a community not as individuals. We learned recently that improvements at Legion Stadium will not be complete in time for graduation, and we made the decision to move the ceremony to the newly remodeled Brogden Hall. Date/Time: June 7 at 7 p.m. Location: Brogden Hall, NHHS Campus Tickets: 5 per graduate Brogden is the heart of our school and the true “Home of the Wildcats,” and we know walking at graduation in this space will be a special experience for the Class of 2024. A special New Hanover Class of 2024 Graduation webpage is in the works and it will provide answers to logistical questions students and families may have. We will share it as soon as it’s available.
