New Butterfly Identified! Hoary elfin (Callophrys polios) Also a life butterfly for me as well! After some research yesterday I found out that this particular butterfly, is rare and localized to Ocean and Burlington counties, and is listed as "special concern" in New Jersey. For that reason, I will not disclose the exact location where I photographed it. This particular butterfly is almost never seen with its wings open, and is tiny. Day 55: Today in the garden, pollinators are in a joyous frenzy. While capturing the moment, I noticed a tiny skipper butterfly, the Atalopedes campestris, seemingly smiling as it eagerly collected pollen from my vibrant Purple Celosia Intenz. Although it might just be a playful trick of the shadows, I can truly imagine it’s happy and enjoying the moment in my garden. Edwards’ Hairstreak (Satyrium edwardsii) - a stunning and very localized butterfly in New Jersey that inhabits sandy openings of oak thickets and shrubby edges of meadows. Populations of these unique Satyriums are in endanger of overgrowth in successional areas and invasive plants and trees that choke out the chance for oak groves. Savanna and I found this Northern Oak Hairstreak (Satyrium favonius ontario) roosting within a bluestem patch, during a night walk, of all things. It was hunkered down into the grasses, close to the ground. It was perhaps avoiding the windier, swaying treetops in the weather. Oak Hairstreaks are a mysterious butterfly in NJ and in many other places, as their presence is never predictable. They like to never show up in the same place twice in many cases and the species will sometimes not be seen for years at a time before being found again. Every decade, or so they typically have some sort of irruption as well. Two-spotted Skippers (Euphyes bimacula) - one of New Jersey’s rarest and imperiled butterflies. Inhabiting bog savannahs, there are few places left for them. Thankfully, in more protected areas, they are having a good year this June. They’re truly beautiful skippers, with a creamsicle color and white borders along their wings. The males are out and about setting up territories and settling nectar disputes. “Helicta” Georgia Satyr, amongst a beautiful bog savannah. These are some of the rarest and most localized butterflies in the state. Helicta Satyr was split as a separate species from Georgia Satyr back in 1999, but regardless, the Helicta subspecies has always been unique in being the only race in New Jersey and the northernmost range of the satyr species. Imperiled to endangered in NJ, these amazing butterflies can be wiped out, or strengthened by seasonal fires within their habitat. On the positive end, natural fires that aren’t too severe open up more savannah for them by burning away shrubbery and small trees. Due to the rarity of the NJ populations and the Helicta type, the species is closely watched and protected from collectors, who have had adverse effects on populations in the past. Having two broods, one is active during June and the other during August. Aphids are invasive and can keep the butterflies from using the milkweed as they need to. Operation Aphid Squish commenced today. Not pretty, people, but we are out to do what it takes for our monarchs. We also placed coffee grounds around the bottom of each plant, as has been known to deter aphids.
