Lillann Ulverud is staying at my studio and is the master of building a trainkiln on my site during the spring. Come and visit her during this weekend where my studio is open. . Her stay is a part of @norwegiancrafts new initiative along with the Danish @statenskunstfond called: . Mapping of specialised knowledge and skills . It was an open call. And the idea is contribute to map out and develop knowledge about production sites and what sort of knowledge and skills are valuable for the craft and design field. This knowledge will be disseminated within the arts and culture sector in the Nordic region in collaboration with the Nordic Culture Fund. About Lillian, Lillan Ulverud took part in the Project network 2022/2023 at GuldagergĂ„rd and is a MA- student from the University of Southeast Norway, campus Notodden. . Her MA research is focused on pedagogic practices in woodfiring and how knowledge is shared and learnt in the woodfiring community. She took part in the New England woodfiring 2023. . For the past seven years she has fired the Northern hemispheresâ largest anagama, âKjĂŠrrahvalenâ. The anagama stands as a functional sculpture in KjĂŠrra Fossepark, in Larvik Norway. Once a year she and others fill the anagama with more than a thousand objects. This woodfiring has been her 'engine' to her creative work since she graduated from âClay, Art and Design1â at Notodden in 2017. . About two weeks has passed since I started my two month project together with Helle here in LysgĂ„rd. Our project is about building a BourryBox Trainkiln, exchanging and building knowledge and experience about environmental and sustainable ceramic processes. Helle will show me some of her tecniques and help me gain some experiences with throwing. She is allso sharing all her knowledge about sustainability in the ceramic processes, as well as teaching me about @gen_jord a big project that she is leading here in Denmark. Through out this project I am allso gaining contacts in the ceramic comminity, and my hope and wish is to contribute to the nordic ceramic community by sharing my experiences here. Thanks to @norwegiancrafts I can focus on this two month project, and hopefully learn a ton! I am so greatefull for this opportunity! Layers of clay and ash was pushed up, making us see the seabed as it was layered 55 millon years ago. And yes, we took samples for glazeđ€© 2 bilde: Helle admiring the site where the kiln will be build. There was a lot of rain here the weeks before I got here, witch made the prosess of building a kilnshed and good foundation difficult. The work probes new relationships between textile and sculptural practice as a project that asks us to reconsider our unconscious relationship to materiality. To some extent, the unconscious is neither inside nor outside the subject, but rather that which structures our desire. In this sense the artist makes space for an aesthetics of desire that asks us to critically engage with what we hold as real or symbolic. In this new exhibition the artist confronts us with what is either consciously or unconsciously excluded or intimate. What is inside us and how we externalize it is at the heart of all art, and in particular fashion. ThorbjĂžrnsen is an artist of distinction with a progressive sculptural practice gesturing toward the world of fashion - recent works have been purchased by the National Museum. Gravity is cast aside as textile and cast concrete develop a falling and collapsing figuration. The artist wants us to see them as bulging, pretentious limbs, weighted down and out of proportion. Like us, the works strive for identity and belonging; foiled and clothed in the superficial, vain, transitory. The weightiness of the sculptures and the close association to drapes and fabrics is a way of inviting us to consider the neologism coined by Jacques Lacan âextimacyâ (extimitĂ©) in 1960 blending the French externe (âexternalâ) and intimitĂ© (âcloseness, intimacyâ). The artist complicates any clear binary between us/them, or inside/outside. In the sculptureâs otherness we find our likeness. Combinations of pleather, fur, feathers, silk, lycra, and metal fittings are folded and draped in a material struggle with concrete. #uniqueobjectoftheweek Nils Martin Cody Lundin and Dave Canterbury, fig 1-3, 2017 Earthenware, stoneware and acrylic paint Martin's art is like a hybrid between the superficial lightness of pop art and the meticulous dedication to craftsmanship. It may seem playful and effortless to execute these seemingly superficial works, and indeed that is the impression. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent how time-consuming and precise Martin's works are executed. Nils Martin (born in 1969) has a series of national exhibitions to his credit, and has participated in exhibitions such as Sotheby's International Young Art in Tel Aviv and New York, as well as exhibitions at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City, Beyond G(l)aze at the Jinji Lake Art Museum in China and KODE Bergen. He has undertaken several public comission work projects, and his works have been acquired by institutions including the National Museum, KODE, and Norges Bank. Another incredible visit to Signe Irene Berg, a master of the ancient Scandinavian craft of birch root basketry. Iâve been so incredibly lucky to get to learn from her since 2016. Some years ago we decided to write a book about this craft and hope a lot will be done in 2024. Birch root weaving is used to make both useful and beautiful items. The only tools we use is a knife and an awl made from the leg bone of a moose.
