Our organization has a rich history of honoring the K-9 community by both commissioning and supporting the dedication of monuments. Today, we were proud to attend the dedication of a monument that pays tribute to the MWDs from Fort Drum, NY. A committed and hard-working group of volunteers worked with the kennels to raise funds and commission the memorial, which features the names of MWDs that served out of Fort Drum. The monument means the world to the K-9 teams on base, who celebrated its dedication with a special demo for the gathered crowd. OOx ships off to bootcamp! You may remember that US War Dogs board member, Alex Schnell and his wife Maddie, fostered puppy program K-9 OOX, to socialize him and show him some love before he begins his military career. Well, the time has come for OOx to return to Lackland AFB to start his training and early signs are very encouraging! On fostering OOx, Alex said: "It's been extremely therapeutic for us and re-sparked our love for the Malinois breed. Nox completed Military Working Dog Course to become a Military Working Dog trained in Patrol and Explosive Detection for the United States Army in 2018. He was then assigned to his first kennel at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska in October of 2018. In 2019, Nox attended the Patrol Explosive Detection Dog Enhanced course that was held at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where we he was trained on advanced off leash capabilities. In 2021 Nox was deployed in support of Joint Task Force-Bravo in Honduras where he provided force protection measures with vehicle searches at the gate and law enforcement duties throughout the base. Nox and his handler were also part of a security detail for medical personnel as they assisted in humanitarian relief for an impoverished and isolated village. Nox and his handler finished their military at Ft Hood, Tx. Nox is on our Rx program and recently had a ruptured ligament and we (US War Dogs) were happy to cover the cost of the surgery which saved them owners over $5,500! ⬅️ How it started ——— How it’s going ➡️ This week marks eight years since US Marine Corps specialized search dog (SSD) Lucca became the first US MWD to receive the PDSA Dickin Medal in London, for her skill and devotion to duty on two tours to Iraq and a third to Afghanistan with her second handler and my USMC brother, Juan Rodriguez. Her legacy lives on and her story continues to inspire me and so many around the world. Fast forward to today, we’ve had another busy week of helping more retired MWDs through US War Dogs’ Emergency Care program, taking our total to $50k so far this year. Our team also met to discuss achievements and future plans, which is always a such a great experience to spend time with our passionate and committed volunteers. US War Dogs Chapter 3 director is former Vietnam scout dog handler, John Meeks, whose enduring love and respect for the community sees him travel the country to give talks and help to educate the public on the role and service of MWDs. We are thrilled to mark the well-deserved retirement of MWD FFidelio Y220 by presenting him with the US War Dogs Service Medal. Ffidelio served with the US Marine Corps from 2015 to 2022 as a patrol explosive detection dog (PEDD). Ffidelio deployed to Dubai, Kuwait, Syria Qatar as a combat-ready replacement and asset for the withdrawal from Afghanistan. He was also attached to a Special Operations unit and was a direct asset on multiple named operations, including a mission that retrieved one of the largest weapons, ammo, firearms, and HME/IED caches in the country. Ffidelio’s handler and adoptive dad, said: “During his service, he was a loyal and dedicated dog who supplied those around him with a welcome morale boost. He made people happy and when he wasn't biting people or finding bombs, that’s what he loved to do. For the past 6 weeks, we have been evaluating a group of over 50 marines on their character, adaptability, proficiency, and potential in order to determine who would earn their black shirt, and a spot on the Military’s finest drill team . . When retired MPC Bass passed away earlier this year, his former handler and adoptive dad, Alex, vowed to do something special to honor his memory. At the weekend, Alex and his wife Maddie picked up a puppy from Lackland Air Force Base, to foster before he enters formal training to become the next generation of K-9 heroes. OOx will spend the next few months at home with Alex, learning about life, socializing and exposing him to a variety of situations, before he enters the next phase of his life: Basic training with the DoD. We will be following OOx's progress while he enjoys time with his foster family, before he returns to Lackland. With just a few days left of Pet Supermarket's fundraiser for US War Dogs, we wanted to share some very special pics of a visit retired MPC Bass made to one of the stores in Austin, TX, shortly before he passed away. Bass and his handler/adoptive dad Alex were the very best ambassadors for US War Dogs and we were so proud that Bass got the chance to say thank you to one of the incredible store teams for all they have done to help raise vital funds for our cause. Is your retired Military Working Dog (MWD) on the US War Dogs Rx Program? There is no public funding for MWDs when they retire so any medical cost fall on the owner. That's where US War Dogs comes in. Once a retired MWD is vetted and added to our Rx program, we cover the cost for any prescription medications for the duration of the K9s retirement. With heavy hearts, we are sad to announce the passing of Retired MWD Giggles R372 on April 6, 2023, at age 14. Giggles was originally dual purpose trained but later became a designated DoD MWD Breeder at Lackland AFB. She produced an estimated 19 pups for the DD4 and JJ4 litters. Later she went on to serve as a certified Human Remains Detection K9 for Bay County Sheriff's Office SAR team here in Panama City Beach, FL. “She was the most amazing & beautiful creature. We were honored to attend the retirement ceremony of three US Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) multi purpose canines (MPC), to recognize their service and dedication to our country. At the ceremony for MPCs Dex, Lara and Tigo, our president Chris Willingham presented the dogs with our Service Medal. He then went out to decoy for the dogs for one last time, which (as you can see), they absolutely loved! After the ceremony, the incredible team at The Dawgs Project held a feed for the handlers and their families, giving everyone the chance to enjoy some great food, fellowship and time together. This event was the first in a new partnership between US War Dogs and The Dawgs Project and we'll be sharing more news very soon. We are so sorry to hear of the sad passing of US Navy patrol and explosive detection dog (PEDD), retired MWD Goro. Goro came to live at The Ddamien Project in April 2021, after serving eight years in the military and was one of the retired MWDs were have been proud to support over the last several months. Goro was a much-loved member of Krystal and Matt’s ‘house pack’ and he will be sorely missed by all who loved him. Mike wanted to give something back to US War Dogs for helping take good care of his best boy during his retirement, so he’s taking part in the gruelling Canyons Ultra Marathon on April 28 to raise funds for our cause. The race is 100km of punishing ascents and descents in California hillside, which Mike estimates will take him around 14 hours. He is currently running around 50 miles a week to ready himself for the challenge, which promises to be a real leg burner! Today, US Marine Corps Special Operations (MARSOC) multi purpose canine, Bass, is the 75th recipient of the PDSA Dickin Medal. Bass completed four combat deployments and over 350 missions with his former handler and adoptive dad, staff sergeant Alex Schnell. This prestigious award - given by the British animal charity PDSA - is regarded as the highest honor an animal can receive.
