#FBF to my last two trips to see #California #NationalParks and #NFL stadiums. When I did that last trip in #NPS103, where I visited 5 of them, two for the first time, there was still one of California's nine national parks I needed to see. Likewise, go back three more years when I saw two of the three California NFL venues, there was still one CA #footballstadium I needed to see. I think it's getting near time to fix that. The last time I went to a new #football venue was also in 2019, and on that #roadtrip I also visited a #presidentialibrary. This upcoming trip will allow me to check off two more of those too. At the end of each year, at least as long as social media has been a thing, I’ve been excited for the top nine feature that always trends this last week in Dec. It’s fun reflecting, looking back, being thankful for all the love and support throughout the year, and just seeing which of my photos make my top nine. Well, 2020... and I posted a grand total of only 9 times. And I am so very thankful for all the love on those precious few posts. While the surprise of which ones make the top 9 is gone, I guess fun way to look at it is that EVERY single one of my photos made the top 9 this year. 😉 Take that 2020. Happy New Year everyone! The Bellefield mansion in Hyde Park, #NewYork. The oldest portion of the house dates to 1795 and was built for Judge John Johnston. In 1885, New York State Senator Thomas Newbold acquired the property. In the early 1900s, the main house was remodeled in the Colonial Revival style, a number of buildings and features were added, and a formal walled garden was designed by landscape gardener Beatrix Farrand. Most of these changes were completed by 1917, and the overall landscape still appears much as it did during that time. The #Bellefield estate is adjacent to and north of the Roosevelt home, Springwood. Bellefield became part of the Home of Franklin Roosevelt National Historic Site in 1975 when its owner, Gerald Morgan Jr. (grandson of Thomas Newbold), donated a portion of the Bellefield estate to the @NationalParkService. The park preserves 75 acres of the former Bellefield estate. Scenic Hudson protects an additional 86 acres. It’s been almost exactly four years since we have been to the National Park sites in Hyde Park, #NewYork, so yesterday we revisted the three sites that are located within a few miles of each other. All of the buildings are currently closed, but the grounds are open. The second I am featuring is Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. #Springwood, as the house is named, was the birthplace, lifelong home, and burial place of the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The original section of the home is believed to have been built about 1800. Roosevelt's father, James, purchased the property in 1866. Over the next 34 years, many improvements and additions were made to the house. In 1915, the final major addition and remodeling of the house took place under the guidance of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and his mother Sara, which gives the home a Colonial Revival appearance. In 1943, Roosevelt donated the estate to the American people and the National Historic Site was established January 15, 1944. The site is also home to the Franklin D. It’s been four years since we have been to the National Park sites in Hyde Park, #NewYork, so today we revisted the three sites that are within a few miles of each other. The first I am going to feature is Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. The #mansion and tiered formal gardens sit on a 211 acre property that overlooks the Hudson River. Frederick William Vanderbilt (1856–1938) purchased the property in 1895 for use as a spring and fall country residence. The 54-room mansion was designed by architects McKim, Mead, & White and built between 1896 and 1899. It is constructed of Indiana Limestone. Many of the mansion's contents were bought in Europe from wealthy families that had fallen on hard times. Furnishings and construction totaled $2,250,000. After Frederick's death in 1938, the mansion was left to his wife's niece, Margaret Louise Van Alen, who tried to sell it but found no buyers. Franklin Delano Roosevelt suggested that she donate the estate to the National Park Service as a monument to the Gilded Age. In addition to the mansion, the property includes the Pavilion (a former residence turned Visitor Center), a coach house, power station, gate houses, bridges, and the gardens (plus ancillary garden buildings).
