NYAFF 2023 official selection, “Art College 1994”, a Berlinale-nominated hand-drawn animation by Chinese filmmaker Liu Jian 刘健, is returning to NYC! Big wins for Japan at the 96th Academy Awards! Congratulations to legendary director Hayao Miyazaki and team for a historical win as “The Boy and the Heron” received Best Animated Feature! He is the oldest winner in this category and was not able to attend the show. The film is the second hand-drawn animation winner in this category. The first was Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” 21 years ago, his first-ever Oscar. “Godzilla Minus One” took home Best Visual Effects, making it the first Godzilla movie to win an Oscar and the first Japanese film to win in this category! You’ve pretty much all heard the news by now (have you?)! Another remake of a modern Asian classic is in the works, and not any remake—and not by any director: Yorgos Lanthimos, of ”Poor Things“ @poorthingsfilm fame, is getting ready to work again with Emma Stone for a retelling of the 2003 Korean cult tragicomedy, ”Save the Green Planet!“ 👽🌍 Considering the surrealist style of the original, it’s no surprise the Greek filmmaker chose to adapt director (and NYAFF 2018 guest, who was attached to the US remake at some point) Jang Joon-hwan’s film about a disillusioned young man who kidnaps and tortures a seemingly ordinary businessman, convinced he is part of an alien invasion. So this is a good time to discover or rediscover this balls-to-the-wall bonkers gem, streaming on one of the lesser known streaming platforms, Kanopy. When video editor Liyo Gong came to see Belgian filmmaker Bas Devos to learn more about the screenplay for his movie, “Here” @here_thefilm, she didn’t know it was a casting call. She ended up getting her first acting gig, which allowed her to see the challenges of working in front of the camera. “In editing, you can always control the time: you can replay the sequence a thousand times, you can control the rhythm frame by frame; but when you act, you can‘t stop time,” she said. However, she found acting to be a refreshing change of pace from her editing work. “I just want to work outdoors more. Because it was so nice to be in the forest and looking at moss under the sun and getting paid for that. With DJing and editing, I’m always in a dark room.
